Comodo firewall

This morning I downloaded "comodo firewall" after alittle trouble getting it set to let my email arrive and to the browser going it was not to complicated. So now I have AVG (free) virus protection, also "spyblaster" 'Ccleaner" & "Ad-AwareSE", do I have my computer safe now?? well safe as can be in the cyber world.

Gillian you mean 'Spywareblaster' hopefully. When you installed the Comodo you went into your security section and disabled the Microsoft firewall if that is what you were using of course. Never use 2 firewalls.

I have been using Comodo firewall and anti virus for many months now and I am very happy with both. I had used Zonealarm and AVG for years but they both started to cause issues for me so I swapped. Probably a conflict with some obscure file in another program I could not overcome.

Slow at 2am would mean the computer is tired and needs rest... or you've had too much coffee maybe and your mind is speeding & that makes the computer seem slow. (kidding wiff ya ;) You might want to look at a program to defrag your registry called PageDefrag ... just type sysinternals into your browser, hold down the Control key and hit enter. Simple tiny program. There are other registry defrag programs for xp but a bit less effective. Do you manually defrag your hard drive occasionally ? A Fragged up hard drive slows things down, especially after a long day. Windows auto updates and virus scans seem to default to the wee hours of the morning to auto run ... that always worries me when I cant sleep. 'Whats that running my hard drive light' Those things running can make you slow down. ~~ I haven't personally messed with core selection. Really haven't read much about it but do understand how somebody at Microsoft says it works. In my mindset, I think you may be able to set programs CPU priority level probably more efficiently than trying to outsmart the way windows handles the core selection. Affinity on Xp, to change it permanently you will need a program to handle the settings. Windows will allow you to change core choice,Â but as soon as that program shuts down or at reboot, windows will revert to its default scheme of auto handling the cores... which from what I've read, windows does very well unless you have a program that for some reason gives you a hassle hogging both cores,,, or I guess if your computing habits are really stressing things making you think you can speed it up by slowing down a certain program, thus allowing one you want to do something 'right now' faster, yet at half speed, when that core is needed and shared elsewhere. Gillian when I was using the Comodo firewall I seem to remember that the computer showed there was none installed. It caused me concern at the time too. However I think if you check the Add/Remove programs feature you will see it listed there. Click Start, click Control panel, click Add/Remove programs. There will be a time delay while the computer is listing all your programs.

I also have ZoneAlarm version:7.0.470.000 and it doesn't show or I cannot find Ping stuff, not only that I lookt in ZA help under PING and ZoneAlarm version:7.0.470.000 does not have what they say it does. They musta tooken it out. Here's what it says: To change a port's access permission: Select Firewall:Main. In either the Internet Zone Security or the Trusted Zone Security area, click Custom. The Custom Firewall Settings dialog appears. Scroll to locate High and Medium security settings. To block or to allow a specific port or protocol, click the check box beside it. Be aware that when you select a traffic type in the High security settings list, you are choosing to ALLOW that traffic type to enter your computer under High security, thus decreasing the protection of the High security level. Conversely, when you select a traffic type in the Medium security settings list, you are choosing to BLOCK that traffic type under Medium security, thus increasing the protection of the Med security level. Click Apply, then click OK. Note that I got this from the help file in Program files > ZoneLab. This is slightly different than the help file ZA coughs up from the control panel. The "custom" tab isn't there - anyway I sure cannot see it. There is an "advancd" tab but it doesn't get to ping.

the confusing thing with about:blank is it can be a legit response to having your homepage set to blank that instance if perfectly fine, then there is a nasty malware that incorporates an about:blank instance, that one is often very hard to get rid of, and it now appears this one you have found is yet another variable which may not be part of that nasty malware (coolwebsearch) but is some kind of ad link. It is pretty confusing. about:blank = the URL interpreted by most web browsers as the command to display a blank HTML document I think if it were me I would just avoid weather.com for now. If you are showing clean with all your scans I think you are ok. Just in case your IE is not set up this way you might want to check and make sure. This is for IE 6.0. For other browsers, check microsoft or your browsers developer. # Go to tools --> Internet Options and select Advanced tab. UN-check "Enable Install On Demand" and "Allow Software To Run or Install". That is UN-check! # Go to security tab --> Internet --> Custom Level. Set " Download Unsigned Controls ' and " Initialize and Script Active-X controls not marked as safe " to Disable. Set ' Download Signed Controls ' to Prompt. If you are not experiencing your actual homepage being hijacked and changed to about:com then I don't think you have the coolwebseach variant.

Thank you Bob- When you say disable the Microsoft firewall is that in the control panel and it tells you "not recomended"? I was just going to ask another question as I tried to go into Microsoft Upgrade and got the error 0x80072EFD, something about proxy/firewall.
I visited "Major Geeks" looks interesting but have to go slow here not very computer smart am sure you have guessed that by now.

When you click Start/Control panel/Security Center the firewall should have a green 'light' and underneath state that the 'Comodo Firewall is currently on'

Just one addition suggestion: make sure you keep these programs updated. AVG and Comodo will update automatically. Spyware Blaster, AdAware, and CCleaner will have to be updated manually. Run scans with AdAware and CCleaner every couple of weeks, and don't forget to defrag your system occasionally, especially if you have installed and uninstalled several programs. Sounds as if you are all set.

Couple of more questions about comodo, in looking at the different parts on the opening page I find a long list of "logs" some repeated all are makes Red or Yellow I really don,t know how to handle those, also the "test your current security comfiguration" is that easy done am alittle afraid to touch that. Other than those 2 problems everything seems to be working fine.

I stopped looking at those logs long ago. Now I satisfy myself by seeing the protection strength meter on the front page at excellent.

You can click to test your security configuration, it takes you to the web site where you are offered a free scan by them. By all means click it if you wish to build your confidence in the program.

I have been using Zone Alarm for years and decided to test its security configuration using the method mentioned in this thread. It didn't pass any of them! Is this an accurate test??? If so, I better uninstall ZA and install Comodo firewall.

Abreeze the best test is the one you have been doing since you installed Zonealarm. If you have had no known issues why would you change because of a test carried out by others? I read somewhere that those tests were on specific points. I have no idea where I read it nor did I search for more data.

Zonealarm is possibly the most popular firewall out there. I used it for many years but had to swap because of a conflict I could not fix or I would still be with Zonealarm.

Having said that, if you feel like a change then give Comodo a try, it is a good program. You will find that when a big Microsoft update occurs Comodo will ask you to validate each action that had been granted at some point in time. Not a big aggravation, especially if you look at it as a positive to help keep your machine clean

Thanks, Owbist... I didn't make the switch and will probably stay with ZA.
