Where did you save? Where did you splurge?
Comments (29)Too early to tell but the one piece of advice I have clung to, I got it out of some kitchen magazine, is that less expensive materials can look much more expensive when they are installed well. I always remember this kitchen (see link) not for its' soapstone counters or beautiful lacquer\painted off-white cabinets which are lovely (and important to the overall effect of the room) but for that composite vinyl tile floor. The custom pattern, the great colours it's fantastic and I am sure many have spent more than 20 times as much on their floor to not achieve 1\2 the impact. What I take from that is while $$$ dictate that you may have to compromise on materials to stay on budget you don't have to lower your standards in terms of the quality of the design and workmanship that goes into the kitchen your working on. One of the reason I chose the box store I did is because the installer is excellent and he gets paid the same to install my stock "Instant Kitchen" as he does someone elses Kraftmaid semi-custom "Venicia" kitchen that cost 4 times as much. So I suppose you could say that I saved on the cabs and splurged on the labour. Time will tell if it was a smart trade off or not. Here is a link that might be useful: pics of mjsmama's kitchen...See MoreDid you put a make-up table in your vanity? Do you use it?
Comments (17)itltrot, I love your drawer for hair appliances. Do you have the hairdryer plugged in somewhere in the vanity, or do you use the outlet I see above the counter? How deep is your counter? Ours will be pretty narrow, about 18 inches; I don't know if that should affect my decision or not. Finally, I see the full run of the countertop is the same height. May I ask how high the counter is? I feel like 30 inches is a typical table/desk height, but most vanities are about 35 inches high. Did you make that counter 30 inches or so high? I'd prefer to have one long counter and not break it up into 2 levels, so the vanity will be low enough to sit at comfortably....See MoreChesterfield Sofa ~ If you have one love where did you buy it?
Comments (24)The beauty of the USA is the democracy in goods available and in pricing for those goods. Matters not if it is a bath towel! You can find one for a 1.99 or you can pay 50.00 bucks. But the point is you probably need not go WITHOUT a bath towel!..........and in many countries you'd do exactly that. So it is with a sofa. Nobody is saying you can't have one for 2k or less. You certainly can! Just don't apply the EXPECTATIONS that would go to one three times that price. That is ALL any one of us is saying. JEEEEESH....See MoreWhat ductless range hood did you choose, and do you love it?
Comments (15)>>>So, what do you suggest?<<< If that was directed to me, sorry, but I can't help on finding effective ductless hoods beyond pointing to the ARS thread as a resource for the OP. No help to you since, IIRC, you already knew about that thread from having recently participated in that discussion and I have no personal experience with the ARS units. My experience from when I have occasionally worked in kitchens with less expensive ductless units ( a Broan hood and several brands of OTRs) was that their undersized charcoal filters were mostly ineffective. IMO, those units well deserved the epithet of "forehead greasers" bestowed by one of the LBNL (Lawrence-Berkeley National Lab) reports that Opaone mentioned. ETA: As I think more about my previous ductless hood experiences, I'm thinking that most of them only had mesh filters and not charcoal filters except for the Broan model which had a rather weak fan and didn't seem to do much more than the OTRs. Maybe better than nothing, but not by much....See MoreUser
