while I do a little bragging. I won two red ribbons at our quilt guild show this past weekend. This is only the second time in about 8 years that I have won a ribbon - we have so many excellent quilters that it is hard to win a ribbon of any color!

This was my entry in the Quild Challenge; we had size requirements and the entries had to have a window with divided panes of glass somewhere in the quilt or be made with the Attic Windows pattern. I found this image of a windmill in Jard-sur-mer, France, on Charles Winpenny's excellent Cornwall Cam.

This quilted table topper for my dining room table won a second place in the Round Robin category. In a Round Robin the projects are passed around to the members to make parts of the quilt, then the quilts are finished up by the original owner of the quilt. These colors will go well with my pink transferware china.

These are beautiful and quite brag-worthy! I love the windmill, it is delightful. I wish I had the time for quilting. But then I'd have a new obsession.

Just found this forecast. Hope? Kind of? Kevin "The cold pattern should stay in place until the end of March, according to an online forecast from the climate center. But from April through June, "odds favor above-average temperatures across much of the continental United States, including drought-stricken areas of Texas, the Southwest and the Great Plains," says Laura Furgione, deputy director of the National Weather Service. Unfortunately, spring promises little drought relief for most of these areas, as well as in Florida, the weather service predicts. As of this week's U.S. Drought Monitor, a federal website that tracks drought, 51% of the U.S. is enduring some level of drought. This is the highest mid-March percentage since the Drought Monitor began in 2000. The two parts of the country that should see below-average temperatures from April through June are the Pacific Northwest and the extreme northern Great Plains. As for precipitation, odds favor wetter-than-normal conditions in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions. Drier-than-normal conditions are most likely in much of the West, the Rockies, parts of the Southwest, much of Texas, along the Gulf Coast and in Florida."

Sorry about your phone! I don't understand why anyone would want to get a cell phone on a contract basis when there are good,reliable, less expensive ones without a contract.I just got rid of an AT&T that seemed to multiply in cost every month,in spite of what my so called "plan" was.I got a Virgin Mobile(no,I'm not affiliated with the company in any way).No contract,unlimited nationwide anytime calling for $49.99 a month plus tax.It ends up around $60.00 a month and for $10.00 more you can get unlimited texting.The service is great and I think pretty much nationwide. DD has Boost which is about the same price.You can order the phone of your choice online or go to RadioShack,some Wal-Mart and K mart stores.Online has more choices than most of the stores that sell them.I have had so many bad experiences with contract phones I will never get another one!

Mary, It is amazing how little I shop now (online or off) that we live out in the boondocks. There's just almost no place I want to go badly enough to spend all the time driving there and back when there's always so much else to amuse me at home. It is just as well. The money I used to spend out shopping at the mall (conveniently located midway between my place of employment and our house when we lived in Ft Worth), well, that now is money spent on the garden and on food preservation supplies....and I am much happier now than I was then. Our idea of a big shopping excursion is to drive down to the metroplex, go to CostCo, get gasoline at the CostCo station, then go next door to the Steak and Shake place for lunch and then head home. On the way home, we'll stop at Sam's Club in Denton if there is anything they have that we need and which CostCo does not carry (often it is certain supplies for the VFD), and then if we can think of anything we didn't get at one of the big warehouse clubs, I pop into the Wal-Mart next door to Sam's to get it. Our final stop is a Lowe's or Home Depot if we need anything they carry. It sounds like a long day, but we do it all rather quickly....bam, bam, bam. In and out of each store quickly, getting only what is on our list and zipping on to the next place. The whole time I'm thinking of what I could be doing if we were at home. There's always so much work in the garden and kitchen calling out to me. Because the garden provides so much of our food, we buy a lot less food than we once did which further shortens the shopping trips, other than buying he kinds of things we need to can or to preserve our food in some other way. Malls just don't hold the same attraction for me that they once did. I'm too busy to spend time in them. Maybe once every month or two, we add Central Market to the list to pick up a few favorite items that are hard to find. After even a half a day down in the D-FW metro area, I'm ready to go home and to go back into hibernation. Johnny, That's so true. One of the things that drives me crazy is how much fossil fuel is used to ship food not just across the country but around the food. The average food item in a grocery store travels at least 1500 miles to get to the store. The average home-grown food we love travels 150 feet at most from our garden to our kitchen. Those are lovely! I am always impressed with the beautiful artwork that can be created from humble scraps of material. Your skill is certainly showcased in these - congrats!

Teresa, those are just beautiful, I love them. I still have the autumn leaves piece you made for my swap box, it hangs on my dining room wall.

I think I still have a picture of it somewhere, I'll try to get into photobucket and post it.

I have finally, after years of buying quilting books and drooling over quilts, started my own Log Cabin pieced Queen-sized quilt. AND I have a fabric stash for the next 3 quilts I want to try.
I hope some day I can be as good as you are.

So many talents!! They are both beautiful. How long does a project like that take?

*I sewed a button on Raymond's shorts last week. Actually won a blue ribbon for a lined 3 piece suit many years ago.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments! It is nice to know your work is appreciated and when an excellent judge has good things to say about your work, it makes me want to go home and sew and strive to be even better.

Both quilts are machine quilted, Sherry - a full time job and life in general prohibit me from doing much hand quilting. I'm glad to hear you are making a quilt and you have the next ones already planned for!

The Windmill Windows is a landscape quilt, that's the type of technique. So much fun! The table topper is made of 8-inch traditional blocks.

Wow... that Windmill quilt is certainly beautiful! How much time did it take you? I admire your talent and patience. I enjoy interacting and playing with my sewing maachine, but when it comes down to measuring and cutting and trying to make something on purpose.... forget it!

What sewing machine(s) do you use for the quilt?

Whoa, Teresa! Those are both just lovely! You do beautiful work! My mom and my sister quilt, I have dabbled. But nothing like those!

Just beautiful Teresa! You can see from the detail on each piece how much work went into them. I think quilting is magnificent and wish I had the time to do more than sew an occasional hemline, button, etc. Congratulations and you should be proud!

I have a Husqvarna Viking Quilt Designer that I use for most of my sewing. But there is a cute Singer Featherweight, a Singer 15-91, a Singer Fashion Mate, and a Brother serger waiting in the wings when I need them. I love old sewing machines....they follow me home.

Teresa, I bought a Bernina in July for my birthday. It really has been fun playing with it. I am taking a whole bunch of different sewing and quilting classes in October and November to help me become more confident and more proficient. I almost got a Husqvarna, but the one I wanted did not come in and I could not wait (that old instant gratification thing that gets me in such trouble). I would love to have a serger also, but can't have everything.

Teresa, did you teach yourself to quilt, or did you have a grandmother or mom who did it as well? How long did it take you to get as good as you are?

Husqvarna... very nice. Like the Kirby of sewing machines! I've never used one of those, but I had drooled over them in sewing machine shops. The lady who sold me my antique Brother machine had a Featherweight for 200 bucks... should have taken her up on it as they're going for 600 on the 'bay and Craig's List. What beautiful little work horses they are... The lady who sold me my machine told me that ladies love them because they can easily take them to quilting class.

Yes, those little FW are so darn cute they just steel a sewer's heart. Mine is a few months older than I am and "Gracie" came from Canada. Many FW enthusiasts name their machines!

I've been sewing since I was 13 and quilting for the past 24 years. My maternal grandmother who lived in Kentucky quilted, so I guess she passed her genes on to me, but I did not learn from her. I took a beginner's class after I made my first quilt and I have taken classes often since then. The wonderful thing about a quilting hobby is that there are so many avenues to explore in quilting: traditional quilt patterns, applique, modern patterns, rag quilts, oriental designs, miniatures, art quilts, etc. etc. In the past year I have added redwork hand embroidery to my patchwork baby quilts and now I'm teaching myself Sashiko, a type of embroidery and quilting from Japan.
