I have a strange situation(at least for me) when I shut down my computer in the hibernate mode(which I always have for years) one of my 3 fans kicks back on a couple hours later. Why? Is there anything I can do to keep this from happening? I hate to leave things running when I am not home. I keep the inside of the machine cleaned out, so there is no buildup of dust in there. It is a machine that I had built many years ago, so no brand name.

Sounds like the proverbial "gremlin" is at work. If you're so inclined, you could try mucking around with the Advanced Power Options under Control Panel. You might find you have available settings for hibernation behavior or cooling policy. A change might make a difference.

Or, if you have both hibernate and sleep options and one doesn't work as you wish, try the other.

Or, just turn it off.

Windows 8 turns itself on to do maintenance. Unless you disable it.

Thanks again. I did review a number of options before posting here for review by the big guns. :) I know some people love the remotes, but personally, I prefer simplicity and control via switches. A remote is one more thing to lose and/or have "hidden" by young children! And yes, our current switches are rotary-style combo setups (two knobs per switch) that control both lights and the fan - there are two settings for lights (low or high) and three speed settings for the fan - each controlled by its respective rotary knob. I've found plenty of switches that control both fan and offer dimming for lights - but all are rated for halogens or incandescents. It's just odd, and I wonder why. I did try a "dimmable" candelabra LED in our current fan/dimmer switch setup - it flickered badly on the low setting. I think some dimmable LED bulbs are okay with newer incandescent dimmers (per happy reviews from folks like JMVD), whereas other LEDs - even those rated dimmable - are more finicky. I won't beat a dead horse. I just wondered if anyone knew of combo switches rated for LEDs that I might have overlooked, or if there was a compelling reason for why they don't seem to exist yet. Maybe we'll try a Maestro switch though, and experiment. Thanks again!

You need to have a means of releasing excess heat that builds up quickly once sun is shining brightly. I'm not sure that you need a large exhaust fan for a smaller structure and in fact if you install too large of an exhaust fan it will be repeatedly turning on and off to keep inside temperature normal when sun is bright, yet outside air is cooler. In many high tunnels the ventilation is accomplished by rolling up the sides of a structure. Others install solar powered ridge vents or other passive controls to release the heat. Fans have some advantages but the advantage that Kudzu mentioned is better accomplished by an internal circulation fan as opposed to a wall mounted exhaust fan. I use both fan types and still roll up sides during summer months. If you install an exhaust fan you must allow for makeup air by either physically opening an opposing door, window or have an intake louver that is open when you either manually or thermostatically run the exhaust fan. A simple internal circulation fan is not enough unless you otherwise open the structure. If you just circulate 120*F air inside your plants will still suffer severely.

I would check with an electrical supply house. I would be amazed if a replacement was not available as this should be a still common type and size fan.

Fans help to keep insect populations down, can eliminate or ameliorate the effects of passive solar (heat) gain that occurs when a plant's leaves act as a passive solar collector and over-heat, which occurs much more frequently than sunburn. Air movement also speeds up the nutrient stream and causes an increase in evapotransporation, which means it increases the plant's nutrient load - generally a good thing because it increases both additive and multiplicative growth. Additive growth = lengthening and thickening, multiplicative growth = more leaves, branches, and roots. Air movement also helps the plant retain growth inside the canopy outline (for trees) and increases the potential for back-budding. If you don't want to muck around with the power settings in Control Panel (I want to neither encourage nor discourage it, if you haven't done so before, better to leave it alone)......

then your remaining choices are 1) that's how it is, or 2) turn the PC off when you walk away from it 3) Turn off sleep and just leave it on. A PC that's idle doesn't use all that much power. Turn off the screen if you're concerned.

Sorry there was no instant solution.

When the fan is running if the computer is already awake from a Command Prompt (admin) you can ask what woke it up, maybe..
PowerCfg -LastWake

Otherwise you might look thru all your tasks. Lots of tasks but eventually you could find what wakes it.

I did look at the power settings and nothing changed there. Mikie, all that is beyond what I feel comfortable with. Let me ask this, would a slight power surge cause this? I have noticed the red light blinking on the outlet adapter on occasion. This is old wiring in this part of the house.
