Linksys notebook adapter connected but not receiving

I've been trying to reinstall a linksys notebook adapter on my laptop, win xp, followed the install instructions from linksys and computer says one or more wireless networks is available, signal strength is excellent but explorer keeps coming up working offline. I get cannot find server or DNS error. I didn't find a window asking for my IP address, could this be the problem? If so, how do I do that?

Maybe, If you have an icon that looks like a little computer monitor in your system tray... down at the bottom right ?

Double click that ... or Right click it.
For ip,,, Properties, TCP/ip properties

Thank you, Mikie for the quick reply. There's no single icon there, nor a double one for that matter, but I tried network connections, properties and there is no place to reach ISP settings through that either. I think what I have to do is uninstall and reinstall the linksys startup again as the startup disk has no editing options. I've done that a couple of times already, getting closer but still not going through even though it shows a good signal. Do I have to do something to the computer my access point is wired to?

you do not have to leave the new desktop hooked up by the wire you just have to do that to get the router set up done you need to do the install on it with the wired connection once that is done and set up just unplug it from the router and use the wireless connection by which ever means you put on it whether it be usb adapter or card, then you leave your old desktop plugged into the back of the router as you apparently had it. The object is to use a wired desktop pc to be able to do the install of the router software, it has to be wired to the router, once complete it does not have to be wired to the router. Be very very sure you set up your wireless network securely and use WPA2 security, set up a user name and password for the router itself and change the SSID to something random because that is what will be seen by anyone out there in range to see your wireless signal. Search on the forum for info on this we just recently had a LOT of discussion on how to do this with links to tutorials. If it is not set up securely anyone in your area can get into your network or anyone driving by. If your new printer is wireless wifi enabled it should just be able to find your wireless network and join it, you will need to have the passkey that you set up in your router for your WPA2 security to log into any laptop or printer or anything that wants to join your network, it will ask you for that passkey once that should be all. I highly URGE you to get a note book have it beside you when you set this up and write down every single thing, user names, passwords, keypass, every thing you do not want to lose that info! I write mine on an index card and tape it to the bottom of the router and keep a copy in my desk in my computer notebook. You have the exact kind of printer you need for what you want, you are over thinking this and getting yourself flustered. Take it one step at a time. Do you have a router yet? If not I can promise you this one which is the one I just got is excellent and is extremely simple to set up using the cd. It is a G which is what I prefered because the N routers had bad reviews and this G had exceptional reviews, I have tons of speed and it reaches to the end of my out door property. Linksys WRT54GS2 Wireless-G Broadband Router if you look at the router page there they do have the N also. they also have the linksys usb adapter Here is a link that might be useful: routers

Need to augment Wireless Signal to DH's computer in his den

I was able to flush the dns on both the xp and vista laptops. But I still can't connect either laptop wirelessly to the "fmaily room" network (which is still unsecured). I cannot access the Nat,spi or firewall soI don't know if that's the problem. Both laptops show a strong signal (full bars) to the family room network - but don't connect. They do connect via wired connection (does this mean I have so far created a network switch). On both laptops I selected "family room" as the preferred network to connect to. But both connected to my Lynn network (from the opposite corner of the house - with only a weak signal). On the Vista laptop it says Windows cannot connect to "family room" - and when asked to connect to family room, it said "Windows association failed due to an unknown reason." When I selected "diagnose and repair, it said Windows did not find any problems with your Internet connection." Then I tried one further thing. I saw on the Vista laptop that it still listed the family room network as having WPA2 security - so i changed what the laptop had for listed for family room network to reflect no current security settings. Then I tried to connect again. It wouldn't connect. Then I clicked repair/diagnose - and it said "this network is marked as a "hidden" network and is either not in the range of this computer or the wireless settings saved on this computer do not match the settings of the network." It is in range of the network - 3 feet away and receiving a full strong signal. So perhaps the network settings do not match the router or access point (although I'm not sure where to look to check this since I think I set it all up to match). The other thing is says is "if you own or set up this network, reset your wireless router or access point and try connecting again." Should I try this? Does it mean unplugging SMC access point, linksys router and modem - waiting and replugging them in? If so, in what order? Or does this mean resetting the SMC completely and starting from scratch? So now what? Jane - I realize that Mikie's the guy - and I very much appreciate his help. Those links helped me get clearer on definitions, but don't really get specific enough to address these set up complications. Thank you. Lynn.

would a usb adapter be better than trying to coordinate the route

A USB adapter is for use in computers that do not have a "built-in" wi-fi receiver. For example, my 5+ year old desktop does not have that ability, just dial-up and ethernet. But my laptop does. So I have my desktop wired to my router via ethernet and use the laptop in another part of the house where it picks up the wi-fi signal. So I'm not sure this is what you need at all.

Hi, mlou_51... grandms is correct that most wireless routers are fairly easy to setup. I know the Linksys comes with very good instructions, both the quick guide and the users manual. And, it has a cd for doing the setup. Basically, you would just replace your wired router with the wireless one. You can use the enclosed cd to help set up the new router. I'm presuming you would not want to set it up manually. After you follow the instructions from the cd, including, I believe the security settings, you should be able to go on-line. Of course, you can pay 75 for your time. The tech will set up everything and is responsible for ensuring it is working properly. I can only guess what happened in your house two years ago. I don't know what the installation agreement was between Adams Networking and you. But, I would bet that the wired router was included in the installation. A wireless router would probably have been an additional $50-100. Even if they had put in a wireless router two years ago, today it would probably work okay. But, it would be slow by today's standards. I suspect you would not be pleased. So, the bottom line is you can install yourself and presuming everything works, you will be pleased and proud. Whether you do it yourself, or someone else installs it, you will enjoy the freedom to use your laptop anywhere around your house. Additionally, as bpgreen said, you should be able to connect at some coffee houses, hotels, and some fast food places. Take a LAN cable and you can connect to wired outlets when available. Hope this helps, :-) --majickmann

I dont want to give you a headache..

I assume you've used wifi before and understand the ssid and passphrase stuff ?
And are actually connected to the router wirelessly ? ... In your browser you can type in the routers ip address and get to the login page?
And there's no security configured in the router that would block your connection to the internet ?

The reason I ask is usually a linksys or other install will set defaults such that the TCP/ip will automatically get assigned an IP and pointed at DNS from the router. You really shouldnt have to configure it.

But ... let me think outloud as I click ,,, if i go to Control Panel and double click Network Connections... I see my wireless adapter!

Then if I highlight it and Right Click, choose Properties .. it opens a little window with a scroll section .. and then I scroll down to the one that says
Internet Protocol (TCP/ip)
Highlight that ... then push the properties button in that window... vwalla,,, how do you spell that... vuwalla.

You probably just want to tick the Automatic rather than manually configure all those ip numbers... like mine is....

if we're on the same mind path

I got it the laptop to show up on my network places on the computer connected to the router, everything looks like it should work. I note on the Network Settings report that the encrypton key is 64 bit but on my laptop it shows 128, which the notice of page can't be found that some should be set to 128 and could be a DNS error. Computer says hardware is working well. I'll try tomorrow again, I think I'm really close but I've had enough for today. Thanks for the references. I'm copying them and check them out tomorrow. Also, my computer wavy icon was not showing in the right hand corner, so I'll check that circle also. Thanks.
