Linksys notebook adapter connected but not receiving

I've been trying to reinstall a linksys notebook adapter on my laptop, win xp, followed the install instructions from linksys and computer says one or more wireless networks is available, signal strength is excellent but explorer keeps coming up working offline. I get cannot find server or DNS error. I didn't find a window asking for my IP address, could this be the problem? If so, how do I do that?

Maybe, If you have an icon that looks like a little computer monitor in your system tray... down at the bottom right ?

Double click that ... or Right click it.
For ip,,, Properties, TCP/ip properties

Thank you, Mikie for the quick reply. There's no single icon there, nor a double one for that matter, but I tried network connections, properties and there is no place to reach ISP settings through that either. I think what I have to do is uninstall and reinstall the linksys startup again as the startup disk has no editing options. I've done that a couple of times already, getting closer but still not going through even though it shows a good signal. Do I have to do something to the computer my access point is wired to?

you do not have to leave the new desktop hooked up by the wire you just have to do that to get the router set up done you need to do the install on it with the wired connection once that is done and set up just unplug it from the router and use the wireless connection by which ever means you put on it whether it be usb adapter or card, then you leave your old desktop plugged into the back of the router as you apparently had it. The object is to use a wired desktop pc to be able to do the install of the router software, it has to be wired to the router, once complete it does not have to be wired to the router. Be very very sure you set up your wireless network securely and use WPA2 security, set up a user name and password for the router itself and change the SSID to something random because that is what will be seen by anyone out there in range to see your wireless signal. Search on the forum for info on this we just recently had a LOT of discussion on how to do this with links to tutorials. If it is not set up securely anyone in your area can get into your network or anyone driving by. If your new printer is wireless wifi enabled it should just be able to find your wireless network and join it, you will need to have the passkey that you set up in your router for your WPA2 security to log into any laptop or printer or anything that wants to join your network, it will ask you for that passkey once that should be all. I highly URGE you to get a note book have it beside you when you set this up and write down every single thing, user names, passwords, keypass, every thing you do not want to lose that info! I write mine on an index card and tape it to the bottom of the router and keep a copy in my desk in my computer notebook. You have the exact kind of printer you need for what you want, you are over thinking this and getting yourself flustered. Take it one step at a time. Do you have a router yet? If not I can promise you this one which is the one I just got is excellent and is extremely simple to set up using the cd. It is a G which is what I prefered because the N routers had bad reviews and this G had exceptional reviews, I have tons of speed and it reaches to the end of my out door property. "What I do not understand is why they charge a monthly fee of 7.95 for up to 4 computers." It may be that the contract you have with them now allows you to connect only a single PC and that they charge extra for multiple PCs to connect. That kind of pricing used to be more common when only propeller headed geeks had home networks, but home networks are pretty common these days, so charging extra seems unusual to me. I'd be in a bit of trouble if I were limited to 4 PCs. I think we've got 5 PCs, a Tivo, 2 game consoles, 2 handheld game systems and 2 iTouches that are all connected (or can be at various times). Fortunately, my ISP doesn't place any limit on the number of devices I connect.

Yes you absolutely can still connect the pc by use of the ethernet cable from the router and use the laptop wirelessly, that is how most usually do it since the desktop stays put. Mine is that way I have my router and cable modem on the end of my desk so easy access from there to my desktop computers so they are all connected by wire, my netbook and laptop are wireless, but even they can be connected by the ethernet cable should you need to. Before I had my wireless router I had a 25ft ethernet cable that ran from my desk on the baseboard to my recliner where I use my netbook. I buy a lot of my electronics from newegg and they do offer good prices and quick shipping. I also use buy.com quite a bit. You may want to check some of those in comparison to your local store. Also if you have a walmart check there they usually carry these kinds of items and for less. I got my wireless linksys router there. On the usb cards some come with a cord on them so the usb device can be moved around some on the desk which will help with reception sometimes. feel free to ask all you need we will try to answer. I too prefer to buy the same brands when possible it just helps sometimes for compatibility issues.

Before you go spending money, let's try a few things. When you took your router to default, everything worked fine. When you use a pass phrase, you get to the internet but web sites don't load. I have a copy of your router manual in front of me so let's try a few steps. 1------Log onto your router 2------Under the wireless setup make sure the SSID reads NETGEAR 3------Make sure the operating channel for the wireless mode.is Auto. 4------ Leave the wireless mode set to the default setting of Up to 145Mbps for 2.4GHz. 5------ Select security options for the 2.4GHz wireless network.The wireless Security Options are set to None by default. 6-----use WPA2-PSK as your security option. 7----- enter the following as your passphrase wndr3400 make all letters lower case. Select APPLY at the bottom of the screen. Under DIAGNOSTICS, select the REBOOT option. Once the router reboots, close out all your screens and reboot you computer. When prompted for a passphrase enter wndr3400 all letters must be lower case. Please post back and let us know if that did the trick.

I dont want to give you a headache..

I assume you've used wifi before and understand the ssid and passphrase stuff ?
And are actually connected to the router wirelessly ? ... In your browser you can type in the routers ip address and get to the login page?
And there's no security configured in the router that would block your connection to the internet ?

The reason I ask is usually a linksys or other install will set defaults such that the TCP/ip will automatically get assigned an IP and pointed at DNS from the router. You really shouldnt have to configure it.

But ... let me think outloud as I click ,,, if i go to Control Panel and double click Network Connections... I see my wireless adapter!

Then if I highlight it and Right Click, choose Properties .. it opens a little window with a scroll section .. and then I scroll down to the one that says
Internet Protocol (TCP/ip)
Highlight that ... then push the properties button in that window... vwalla,,, how do you spell that... vuwalla.

You probably just want to tick the Automatic rather than manually configure all those ip numbers... like mine is....

I got it the laptop to show up on my network places on the computer connected to the router, everything looks like it should work. I note on the Network Settings report that the encrypton key is 64 bit but on my laptop it shows 128, which the notice of page can't be found that some should be set to 128 and could be a DNS error. Computer says hardware is working well. I'll try tomorrow again, I think I'm really close but I've had enough for today. Thanks for the references. I'm copying them and check them out tomorrow. Also, my computer wavy icon was not showing in the right hand corner, so I'll check that circle also. Thanks.
