Thanks Zep .... had already ran this and came back reporting it relocated updating files ... ran update and still no go. Same error message. I ran all of the solutions in your 1st message... nope same error. I am so frustrated as nothing seems to solve this.

I saw that Zep but am very apprehensive as it says its new and in the growing stage (something to that effect). I might not have a choice to try it but would like it to be my last choice. Thanks for responding with the helpful hints.

If you have not already try running a Malwarebytes scan, make sure you can up-Date malwarebytes too

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop click Here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Quick Scan", then click Scan
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

Thanks zep ... I have the paid version of MBAM & computer is clean. I know a few people who have said "Don't worry about it I never update" ....

I, too, have the paid version of MBAM. This Win error code often turns up when another program is running in real time as you're trying to download an update...and it's often triggered by Malwarebytes. If you add Windows\System32\wusa.exe to MBAM's ignore list you may do away with this problem. In the meantime...suggest you momentarily disable MBAM so the updates will load.

If MBAM were the only protection I ran on my Win7 system, Joe...I wouldn't have suggested the "fix" that I noted above. I've had no troubles with that error code since I discovered what triggered it and amended the MBAM ignore list. I have MS Security Essentials running all the time, too...and it and MBAM cluttered up my Event log for a while until I discovered what was causing the problem. It took a few takes but I finally got them to play nicely together by recognizing each other. ;-)

Yes I understand you can get them to work together on Win 7 MBAM & MS Security Essentials. As long as you make the exclusions as you have pointed out. I think most average users might have difficulty though figuring it out...

I must confess I had a few tearing-out-of-hair sessions in the wee hours of the morning adjusting those two. MBAM was the least of the problem. It was Security Essentials who wanted the stage all to itself requiring all MBAM files be ignored before it would play nice. Bless Window's Event log. Without it...the impossible wouldn't be possible. ;-)

I was wondering if the user "goldensmom> could have up-Dated in Safe mode with networking booting to that mode of course disables all Anti Virus programs, it's not a solution, but if it does update it certainly tells us a program is in the way and most likely an Anti Virus or Firewall program, so that gives us a starting point to the problem. I started to Google "Running MBAM & MS Security Essentials together" That's when I saw some of what you indicated with the wusa,exe exclusion. Then you posted and pretty much confirmed the fix. So not only is it good information you posted, it most likely is the fix indeed....

I, personally, am not a big fan of using safe mode although I know many users are. I'd rather spend a little extra time and find out what's causing the problem to begin with. But...that's me! Not everyone has the time for the kind of exploration that it takes...or wants to do it. Over my years I've learned that tracing the problem back to it's origination point more often than not avoids future problems. Often these minor glitches cause some major headaches further down the pike if not cured.

I am, however, a big fan of "Fix-it" and was cheering for your suggestions above. Sometimes MS is the only one who can unsnarl their software issues and I've used that site a few times.

Another good help area is Windows Tech Net site. Utilizing their on-site search engine by entering the error codes that the Event log spits forth can produce corrective measures along with invaluable information.

Anyway...I hope "our" suggestions do the trick for goldensmom. ;-)

Thanks everyone who tried to help. After doing a sfc/scannow it shows my register is so corrupted that I probably need a professional to fix everything. It's a shame the MS can't provide a legit fix to this problem as it seems many people have the same problem. I question their knowledge especially when I read a fix is to do updates in safe mode when the fact is that safe mode updates can't be done in Vista. Just wanted to say thanks again for trying to help.
