installing a vessel style sink on top of a small cabinet

Hi all,

I return with all of my questions because you always have something productive when I get stuck. My guest bath vanity space is small, 24" or less, and I am thinking of building a relatively inexpensive custom vanity box with barker cabinets as an alternative to ikea. (Modern, minimal and less expensive is tough to find.) Anyone had any experience with this company?

I'd like to build a box to fit a DecoLav Classically Redefined Rectangular Vessel Bathroom Sink, or something similar, and just use it like a sink top, with no additional counter space.

Any thoughts, or cautions about going this route?

Do you have an inspiration picture you can share?
I am actually thinking along those lines too but using the Ikea godmorgon frame and custom drawer fronts and side panels from Semihandmade. And a vessel sink because its almost impossible to find an undermount sink to fit such a small space. But I was planning to get a remnant for the counter because I was afraid that water would spill or drip on the top of the cabinet and mar the finish.

Inspiration would be any one of the small rectangular box-style vanities that hangs on the wall, with a rectangular, modern-looking sink that fits exactly on top of the box. Much like the ikea styles, but better quality materials. No surrounding countertop for splashing: the vessel sink has to fit the box pretty much exactly, hence the custom built option for the cabinet. Nameeks makes ones that look more solid and the finishes look better, but they start at around $1000 and go up for very small sized pieces. With solutions like ours, I think you can do much better than that. I think you will find a wider selection of finishes for your wood with semi handmade -- I like the owner's taste!

We have a round vessel sink with the offset faucet. To help with splash, wait to drill the hole for the faucet until you can set the sink on the counter and mock it up. Try to position the faucet spout so that the water falls just shy of the drain. You can also reduce the amount of water coming through the water supply valves so you have a lower volume of water flowing which will also reduce splash. Like you, we didn't want a modern look. Delta makes their Victorian faucet in 2 different styles--a traditional and an open top. We went for the open top as it looked more "rustic" & went with the antique pewter finish to give it that aged look. Very happy with our choice. I've attached a couple pics below. I just looked at a bunch of images online of this sink. I think the most functional will be the single hole deck mounted lever type faucet. I like that the hands wont have to reach behind the sink to turn it on and off, so most of the wet hands will drip into the sink when manipulating the handle. I think the wall faucet would be really wet/drippy into the space behind the sink when turning on/off. One thing to consider about the water flow, is that some spouts come out at a particular angle. That angle and distance from drain will determine if the water is over the drain or not. So if you got a shorter spout reach that had a larger angle to the water spray it could reach the drain. I wouldn't want too much intrusion of the spout into the space of my sink. I am very happy with my sink and faucet. Its an under mount but it isn't too projected into the sink and I can get my hands under it just fine. In fact when I was designing my sink and faucet I drew lots of pictures to scale of hands, degree pitch to the water spray and sink dimensions. I did not want to buy a second faucet. My sister has an off center faucet in her rather shallow depth vanity, and the spout is too short and to low to the top of the sink. I hate washing my hands in that sink. A design firm designed her bathroom. I will see if I can find a drawing I did for my sink design which ended up changing but it will give you an idea of what I mean.

This one is around 20" x 10" and looks like a little bath tub! caracalla-ceramica-ceramic-rectangular-vessel-bathroom-sink This one is huge, but it will need a wall-mount faucet or one mounted way off to the side. These are the only solutions I can come up with. I am open to suggestions so I don't have to have more new cabinets built. I drew on grid paper, but the lines did not show up. #1 - The sink is too far away so it won't work. Even if the sink was turned, it sits too far from that corner. #2 - I don't know if the sink plumbing will be too far from the waste pipe in the wall. It would be about 10 ft away. We could add sturdy support legs to the make-up vanity and put a shelf where the X is. #3 - I know we have the tools to cut the cabinet it half and rebuild it, but I don't know if we should. We would need to cut off some of the height since this side will be lower. The X is just a blank space, unless we make a shelf there and add sturdy support legs for the make-up vanity. The make-up vanity may be too close to the sink. #4 - I could use a couple of my old cabinets to put space between the make-up vanity and the corner. I would not use the 28" drawers at all. I don't need that much space for the knee area. It is not like a desk where a chair gets pulled in all the way. Dead corner would not be useful. I could also put the make-up vanity to the far left with the old drawers to the right. Can anyone see any other options? How close should the sink be from the waste pipe? Thanks. This mess is a pain.

Just curious about how big is the space you have. I have a 62 inch wall where toilet and pedestal sink sit side by side. But now thinking about moving toilet to side wall to have more room for vanity. We were planning to put in a wall mounted toilet anyway (space saver) so dh said moving it would be ok.

My wall is a bit narrower than yours -- It's is only about 55" on which toilet and pedestal sink currently sit side by side. The room is pretty tiny overall - just a rectangle which is 2/3 toilet and vanity space/ 1/3 shower space.

We actually had a similar situation in another bathroom that we already renovated -- dimensions more like yours, and there we decided to move the toilet into line with the sink. While the wall hung toilet you are considering will make a difference with the perception of greater space, we found that being able to look through all the way to the back wall (we have a shower in the back of each space with glass door to not obscure the view) seems to work for us. We are not as concerned about the size of the vanity here because it is for guests. Do you have a shower to consider as well?

Can you use one of the free computer aided drawing programs to make a drawing of what you want your layout to be? After this conversation, I think I am going to be trying to do a drawing too. Thanks!

mgedid, I do not have a full bath like you do - its just a powder room, but with the same space restrictions for the vanity. I just posted another thread "Powder Room Layout" which links to an article that shows our layout - current and proposed. I have inclued the link below as well.

For me, its not so much the storage space I am worried about with a small vanity, its just that it doesn't give me the look I want for a first floor powder room because I think it will look cramped and "boring". And of course I am severly restricted to sink options with such a small vanity. I think walking into the room and facing a nice size vanity/mirror on the back wall with the toilet off to the side will be more visually appealing. Fortunately, my DH (who has become very agreeable since he retired) has given me the OK to change the toilet location.
