? re: Netscape

I have always had Netscape 4.79 on every PC I've had. Since Firefox came out that is my preferred browser, but I also want NS on my new Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

I see NS 8 has some things I don't want; what about NS 7.1? What would be the best version now? I only want the browser, not email, etc? I use Thunderbird.

Suggestions?

Try Opera9
It's where the browser world needs to be....
Gotta love that "top 10" listing and the fonts size selector and... well I swear, I was a netscaper for a long while too... But Opera did change my mind....

3) Konqueror

I like Konqueror a lot too, but unfortunately for M$Windoze fans it's a Linux only browser... Safari I don't like at all, but my son thinks it's great and that's all he'll use on a Mac.

I second the vote for Opera. I've been using it for about a year now. I especially like the downloader which is better than any of the download accelerators. You choose exactly where you want the download to go, and it will resume if you should lose your connection for any reason. Also, Opera has a nice, clean interface.

There's nothing quite as cool-looking(temperaturewise) as BLUE flowers. I grew Phacelia a few years ago, best blue i ever saw, next to cornflowers. The bell-shaped blue flowers with icy-white anthers were beautiful, and stirred up images of cooler weather. They do have a short bloom time, hot weather just about stops the show, cutting back helps somewhat. Give 'em a try, i believe there are 2 or 3 varieties. Good luck, and enjoy.

Ah, Sandy. I still have OS 8.6 functional on a Mac II CI. Still, I don't ever use the machine anymore, because it is soooooo slow! On the other hand, my Power Mac G4 400, is now an "old" machine also, and I have upgraded the OS to vs. 10.2.8, but that's as far as I can go, without a new machine. It is a never ending money pit, but new machines are unavoidable, just to stay connected to the web and email. Even your ISP will not support systems but sooooo old, and if you want things to work well, you are forced to upgrade at some point. I can tell you that you won't need anything more than an iMac, today, to get very adequate capabilities on a Mac. I can also tell you that the price gap between wintel and Mac has all but disppeared, if you compare functionality to funtionality. In fact, at work, I actually had to pay more for a Dell, that did the same job as a Power Mac G5. (smile) If you have an Apple store anywhere near you, it might be worth checking a new machine out. (Or a Fry's superstore, although they won't be able to offer as much help to you, as the Apple store, in looking at what the new machines will do.) Otherwise, my favorite on-line folks are Small Dog. Best support out there.....including Apple. (smile)

Melanie: You can goof up my name and call me gidget or whatever. I come from a BIG family and have been called by siblings names all my life. Thank you so much for posting this info. Someone on another of these forums posted they were having same problem so I am now convinced it's Netscape's problem. If they don't get it straightened out soon, I'll look into using another browser. Have a great day, Shirley

I have had similar problems with yahoo browser, it worked great in ie6, but now I seem to get script error messages sometimes with ie7. I have had to remove the yahoo software from my computer and reinstall it acouple of times, which seems to do the trick. I have not encountered any email problems since I switched to their Mail Beta program, and I like the layout better. --J

I had Opera on my old machine. I still preferred FF over it.

I have images stored on Netscape and just wanted access to that more than anything else.

I'll try NS7 and see how I like it.

IMO, I haven't found a Netscape I liked since 4.79 and would stick to that

I also have Opera, but I actually prefer Mozilla 1.7.7, which I think is the "new Netscape", since it was developed by the same people. I generally use Firefox as a browser, but Mozilla is better for downloading, and I like the free pop email function. Even if you don't want the email, the downloading ability of Mozilla is worth it. I like Opera because you can zoom in and out of pages, which can be very useful.

Sue, although it's not my default browser, I keep Netscape 4.79 on all my computers to use for certain things and still prefer it to the newer versions.
