Firefox questions

I was one of the diehard Netscape users who now has had to make a decision on a new browser to use. I have WindowsXP. I downloaded Firefox yesterday, but have encountered a couple of problems. I'm having to use Netscape to post this.

1. When I try to post a message here on the Garden Web and click on Preview Message, I get: Error: Cookie Rejected that goes on to say that I have to have cookies enabled. Under Tools/Options/Privacy, I have cookies enabled until they expire.

2. On another website's message boards, I have the option as I do here at the GW to save my info so that I'm already logged in each time. FF isn't doing it. It does here at the GW. (But once I log in, unlike here, I -can- post messages.)

I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Firefox works fine here for me. Only thing I can think of is to click the exceptions button where you enable cookies and see if somehow gardenweb or ivillage is listed there.

Thanks, Bob, for answering. I went to FF help page and found the answer to not being able to post here. I had to change a setting in my personal firewall. Don't know why IE and Netscape were okay without the change. But I'm just as happy as can be to be able to post using Firefox!

I'm still searching for the answer to be able to save my auto connect at the other website.

It means FireFox didn't understand the way a piece of a webpage was written. Instead, it displayed the parts of the page it could and ignored the instructions it didn't understand. And it entered a notation in the error log letting you know that it didn't understand something. The Error Console just lets you access the error logs. Unless you are a programmer working on FireFox, the error logs would be virtually useless to you. Pooh Bear

mago this is what it says about dom inspector on the firefox site: DOM Inspector is a tool that can be used to inspect and edit the live DOM of any web document or XUL application. The DOM hierarchy can be navigated using a two-paned window that allows for a variety of different views on the document and all nodes within. Note: This add-on depends on binary changes to Firefox, and will not work with Firefox 2. I do not have it, never used it, so can not comment on it, if you do not use it then you can easily remove it. In fact I see you have ff 2 and it says that dom inspector does not work with ff 2??? There is a post some pages back that I had started called tips and tricks that thread has a lot of good info on ff ad ons and other useful stuff.

Yeah, sorry, I'm not expert enough to explain the difference, just pointing out that there is a difference. My banking sites work fine without Java. I wasn't implying your problem is Javascript, just that it's not Java. Javascript is not something you manually update, it's built into the browser and updates when you update the browser. Personally, I wouldn't rush to reinstall Windows if all the problems are in Firefox. First, I'd try the "reset" that you tried. If that didn't work, I'd uninstall Firefox and reinstall it. If that didn't work, I'd do it again but make sure it didn't leave anything behind. Make sure it removed my old Firefox profile, maybe even run CCleaner's registry cleaner to make sure all Firefox registry entries were removed. Then if after all that it still didn't work right... I'd consider reinstalling Windows. I'm not an expert though so I'm saying that's what you should do, just telling you what I'd do. BTW, every time I've ever reinstalled Windows, I dreaded it but ended up glad I did. Machine ran snappy new again. Sorry I can't help more.

You probably got a bad download. Try downloading it again and starting over.

Did you check - tools - security - remember passwords for sites I visit?

I'm not sure if that's what you are talking about, but that will put in your passwords.

Jane: Thanks for your response. Yes, I have that checked and it -does- save the password info, but I still have to go thru the log in process, just don't have to re-enter the info. I was trying to find a way that when I used my bookmark for the site to open it, it would do an 'auto login' like it does here.

I searched a long time yesterday and found out from some others on that particular site that the site only supports Firefox 1.5. So that answers that question.

I was a hold out regarding FF, but got bored one day, installed it, worked out the minor problems and love it now. I love that it remembers my passwords. Getting old is a pain.

it sounds like the cookie that you need for the other forum is not getting set. Have you tried going back to that forum and clearing your info and re-setting it? You might also want to clear your cache on firefox prior to doing that. Worth a try anyway.
