Corrupted file?

I have a Maxtor external hard drive connected to my computer. Today I was making some backup copies of DVD-R discs. The program I use makes an MDS and an ISO file for any such event. I don't know that all that means, but it works for me. Problem: I go to "My Computer", right click on that external hard drive, right click on the MDS and ISO files individually and one at a time, drop-down menu offers "delete". Click on "delete" and message "Cannot delete xxxx. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". What now? As far as I know the new disc turned out fine. Now I cannot reclaim that disc space.

The only thing I can think of is to run chdsk, on the drive here's how,

Start-->Run-->cmd
Type in the following:
CHKDSK C: /F > C:\CHKDISKLOG.TXT (note: substitute "CHKDSK C" for your drive letter)

Hit your Enter key.

Click YES on the popup to reboot.

After CHKDSK has run type this in Start : Run...

C:\CHKDISKLOG.TXT

Notepad will open to allow you to view the results of Check Disk

I did not have time last night to try the suggested Check Disc. I turn off and disconnect from power at night. This morning after boot-up, I decided to try once more to delete those files. No problem at all, deleted immediately. I do appreciate the time spent trying to help with this problem.

My hat goes off to both of you as I extend as much kudus as are possible via the internet ! Thank you very very much ! Like I said, I ran the Norton One Click Support, let it do the comprehensive scan and still had the corrupt file. I then did the Chkdisk and after it ran its course, I'm up and running again, no error messages AND Outlook Express opened and is running normal. I did loose all mail in the incoming folder, but I needed to weed that out anyway. Thanks again . Lee

it would help if you could explain what you mean by crash your pc?? What version of windows are you using? Have you tried using another browser instead of IE like firefox? It is always a good idea to have at least 2 browsers on a pc in case IE fails to work. Have you tried to do a simple system restore to a date when it was working properly? can't get out of check disk utility

Control+C Try it on a tracert or something in a cmd window. It may need several taps to work ... but it breaks the process or aborts the running command.
