My Vista issue....:-(

I installed Vista on my desktop about 3 months ago and absolutely love it...I had to buy a more aggressive video card, but it was well worth it. Then I installed in on my laptop....love it there too. I'm skipping along in my own little world not bothering a soul and get a pop-up that I have Vista updates...la la la...install updates...BANG!

My Microsoft Wireless Keyboard no longer functions!!!

I tried to roll back time but that didn't work. I got an alert that the keyboard wasn't working from Vista and asked permission to watch for the "fix"....I said yes and sure enough about 10 days later I'm told there is a fix and where to go get it....I did...still doesn't work. I go in and look at the list of now known compatible Microsoft Wireless Keyboards and the one I had was not on it...no drivers for it (even though I was alerted that there were updated drivers to fix the problem)...so I switched to another Microsoft Wireless Keyboard that WAS on the list...went back out and got the correct drivers and uninstalled and reinstalled....still doesn't work.

Each time you install this "fix", you have to uninstall it first and I've done it four times now and each time with the keyboard not plugged into the computer because, afterall, it doesn't work at all.

I feel I've done all of this correctly...and I'm sooooo ready to pull my hair out....I just have to believe that this is an error between the keyboard and the chair...I mean afterall, who would build an OS and under the same name build a wireless keyboard that are NOT compatible...surely not any company I know(LOL)....anyone have any ideas?

Okay, I forgot to tell you that this was a desktop set and that the mouse is still working perfectly fine.

deleting cookies does very little to speed up your computer and will require you to login manually to any sites you are a member of, and also will delete any site preferences stored in them. While it certainly hurts nothing, this can be a huge inconvenience. I manually delete cookies, saving the ones from the site i visit frequently. I do this about once every other month. deleting all files in system temp caches (not to be confused with temp internet cache) can be disasterous to software upgrading and removal if they store uninstall files in there. Some software packages use system temps for uninstall and update/upgrade information. Many here feel that Superantispyware is superior to both Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy; perhaps it is. It is never harmful to have several programs for the spyware/malware stuff. I have these as well as Windows Defender. You are right about having only one anti-virus program, but in the spyware department, more is better. By the way, Avast is a great free anti-virus program, but don't run it along with McAfee.

buyorsell888 It is hard to say if the hardware will work for sure with vista. One way to check would be to go to the manufacturer's site for each piece that you have and see if they have drivers for vista. Most things like the hub and speakers work with everything. I do have an option that may work out even better. Have you ever heard of Ubuntu? It is a flavor of Linux that is very powerful and easy to use. It is free and will run rather nice on that hardware that you mentioned. I have set up a dozen people on it and all but one stayed on it. She only left it because her motherboard went bad and bought a new computer. A mac. I included a link to either download and burn a copy or to ask them to send you a free cd. If it is your original hard drive, you may want to go buy another one because that might be at the root of your problem, or it could just be spyware or virus problems. I tried Ubuntu after beta testing vista and have to say that I am happy that I decided not to switch to vista. My camera that wouldn't work with windows unless I downloaded the garbage software works with Linux flawlessly. It is also a good bit faster as well. It comes with a fully compatible word office suite as well. Let me know if you have any more questions. What is there to lose except a little time? If you don't like it, then you can spend the money and buy a new machine. I have to admit that it isn't for everyone. Some people have a need to spend money on things to think that it is a worthy solution. Either way, you have an option if you choose to take a look at it. I can sense a little bit of frustration here. Even though I am a Vista user, right now I don't have any suggestions as my first thought was a driver issue, but you seem to have addressed that.

It is unfortunate you developed this concern over the holiday weekend. During the Summer the Forum slows noticably, and on the holidays it comes to almost a standstill. So as hard as it is please be patient. The good and knowledgable members will return and I am quite sure someone will be able to counsel you on a solution.

Oh by the way, the only reason I am on the Forum today is Mrs. DA had to work so besides doing yard work all I had to do was peek in every once in a while.

The first thing I would try with wireless stuff is to remove the batteries and either replace with fresh ones or at least rub both ends to clean the contacts. I realise you have tried 2 keyboards but nothing ventured nothing gained and at the very least you have removed a possible cause.

I took a clue from the fact the mouse is working but not the keyboard. If these were a pair when purchased then only one set of software accommodates both items.

have you tried using a plug in keyboard either usb or PS2 to see if that worked ok?
have you hit the tiny little reset buttons that are on all wireless ones?
I am not using vista so can not help with anything vista specific. I know my wireless keyboard on xp just suddenly quit showing up, I fought it till I got sick of it and got me a usb wired keyboard and went happily on my way. My wireless mouse works fine.

Thanks DA for reminding me that most everyone who normally support this board is probably gone for the weekend...lol...I need that. ;-)

Owbist, I have changed the batteries and have confirmed good batteries in place and I should have said that before. The two pieces of the desktop set actually use separate pieces of software....one for the mouse and a completely different piece of software for the keyboard. I agree that this sounds very strange, but its a fact.

I am using a standard USB keyboard for the time being and I'm not so mobile that I MUST have a wireless keyboard, but this has become a challenge to get this Vista desktop to use the wireless keyboard just as it did prior to the Vista updates.
