Help! Thickness of vapor barrier?

Hi All,

We are done with excavation, and they're about to put in the vapor barrier before pouring the slab foundation. The architect has called out 20mm thickness, and the contractor says they usually use 10mm, but have found 15mm out here (Nor Cal), and want to substitute that. He said something about it being too thick, and brittle, and would crack (per manufacturer). Can someone tell me what is customarily used, and why 20mm would be more brittle than 10mm? I REALLY don't want the barrier to fail, but I also don't understand why thin is better? I had stressed that I DEFINITELY don't want the house/basement to leak, so perhaps that's why they did 20mm? Thanks for all help!
