Laurier, I think I can explain what you are missing. Northwest Florida is very similar to my climate and not at all like Central or South Florida which rarely has frosts or freezes. The difference is that you have your seedlings in a more controlled (warmer temperature) environment. The person producing the video is obviously letting them grow outside in pots all year around with minimal protection from the cold. This means that they will definitely go into dormancy from around Thanksgiving (or perhaps before) until March each year. In pots, they will be dormant even longer than they would in the ground. Certainly, seeedlings will bloom in less time if kept in a warmer environment with more light than our winters tend to provide. The tradeoff is in the numbers of seedlings that you can grow outside, in pots, as opposed to inside or in a temperature controlled greenhouse under lights. I hope that helps you to understand the difference in growth rates. Larger numbers with slower growth outside vs. smaller numbers inside, under lights... They appear to be giving the pod parent name with no indication of pollen parents. In my opinion, that is better than giving a pod parent name and saying it is crossed with the pollen of an unlikely cross due to insufficient controls and documention. We all have a lot to learn. I started learning hybridizing daylilies. That made it easier to understand hippeastrum. BTW, daylilies are the same in regards to dormancy in seedling years. If you can manage to keep them warm and under lights during that first year or two, they will bloom much quicker. Hope that helps... Ann

Leave what little is left behind Not trying to start a huge argument, but just to play devils advocate. there is one reason...and thats people want the wood for consumer purposes. You and I probably agree that's not a great reason to kill a 1000 year old tree, but nonetheless thats why they do it, people buy it. Like I said I could tolerate some cutting of large trees as long as others were protected. That seems like the best of both worlds for habitat quality. Keep some old growth to support species that depend on it, but keep forests dynamic so that you can have more diversity. The problem is that there just arent enough lands set aside for natural areas becuase there are so many people who need houses to live in and shopping malls to buy junk at. At the end of the day we need more forests (of whatever age) and less sprawling subdivions of ugly homogeneous boxes. trees can and will in time adapt to climatic change, logging, whatever. We just need to give them a fighting chancve by not crowding them out of existence.....will get off of my soapbox now.

I found it to be a huge time-waster for me personally, although I know many people for whom it just works. I was just talking to a friend last night who said she enjoys being able to keep up with her kids via Facebook, and I can totally understand that. I also enjoyed reconnecting with some folks from the past, but I can honestly say that out of the 249 friends I had "amassed", I really only cared to keep in touch with a handful of them with any regularity. I let those few know I was "leaving the pack", but made sure we exchanged email addresses so we can stay in touch. I doubt the rest even realize I'm not on Facebook anymore. Totally agree with you about not caring where everyone is, every moment of the day. Mary Smith just 'dropped the kids off at the pool'. (OK, so I don't know anybody who actually posted that, but some folks did come pretty darn close. Way, way, way TMI.) ;-)

If you don't mind getting a little techie, you might locate your active Firefox profile (go though Help -> Troubleshooting Information), exit Firefox (important to exit), move the profile folder some place safe such as your "Desktop" and re-enter Firefox. It will create a new profile folder that will probably solve your problem. You will lose extensions, bookmarks and their keywords (I've did that before too). Like a fresh start. But since you saved a copy of your profile, you can always retrieve bookmarks, etc. Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data I know that's not for everyone but it's really pretty easy. Worse come to worse you can always re-enter the newly created profile folder, quit Firefox (again, important to exit or some of your changes may be overwritten), select and delete all the files/folders and COPY all the files/folders from your saved profile in there and you'll be right back where you started. Like I said, it's not something everyone would want to do but... that's probably what I'd do. :) In fact, I'm on my bedroom computer right now. I have a little one line script that copies my places.sqlite bookmarks file from my living room computer to this computer. That way I have the same bookmarks in here as in there. I haven't tried Firefox sync in ages. It might be fine now but if I remember correctly, it sorta jumbled bookmarks, putting duplicates in subfolders, something like that. I don't exactly remember. But probably for that reason, I just started syncing relevant files and it's worked fine for me. I don't sync to my phone though. I suppose that's where Firefox sync might come in handy? ETA: When you go "into" your active profile through Help->Troubleshooting, you'll be inside the folder you want to move. You'll want to go up a level to do the actual move. I'm sure you'd notice that but someone else might not.
