Lol! As soon as Aliska sent me the link in responding to my post, I did the same thing! I watched all the videos and now I need my husband to start digging a new bed that will be dedicated to Iris'. Now the only problem is how to break the news to him... a big steak on the BBQ perhaps?

Not being bossy, but be sure and have him make it big enough. I suspect you are either now a 'collector' or soon will be one. If you want to keep them separated (as in not get them all mixed together) they need to be planted a good distance apart from one another. It is surprising how one little rhizome will grow and spread so quickly. I still haven't decided what is the best 'comfortable' distance to plant them here to assure them not needing dividing too soon to avoid running together. Some of course are a lot more prolific than others it seems.

It is suggested that they be planted 2' apart if one has the room, but have found that in 2-3 years some have outgrown their allotted space already, which is great, if I had the 'spare'(?) time to divide them as soon or before they needed it...sigh.

I focus on the 32F, Bonnie, but it becomes the "town closest," or to the hill above the town, to the neighborhood, to out front/under the tree . . . The frost will form on the roof of the vehicle in the driveway but there will be none on the lawn on the other side of the fence - with the same blue sky above. We can say that the dandelion, or any plant, is simply responding to what has been happening in its immediate environment. Of course, that is not a 100% indication of what "will happen" in its environment. But, what can be valued in the phenological signs are the immediateness in space and time of plant responses. About 30 days ago, something happened which set another something in motion for the plant. Given certain conditions, another so many days will pass and something else will occur. I suspect that some of these environmental prompts are no more than a few weeks in the past. The plant's internal processes are set on a course that show results in a fairly short time. The Weather Service's measurements cover a century, or so. Averaging indicates frost, or near frost, or hard frost. This year's data hasn't yet been recorded. One of the criticisms of the WS is that, often, even this decade's data hasn't been factored in. Nevertheless, we are coming down to the greatest influence on spring warmth of all: the sun and the angle of the sunlight on our environment. The calendar is our indicator of that but I cannot ignore, the dandelion. Steve linked below are observations made over the previous decade by a community group in Minnesota. it is truly confined to place. i assume that the "first dandelion" is a recording of the first dandelion bloom, not the appearance of seed. back in the stone age .. lol ... pre WWW ... when i HAD A TON OF SOMETHING .... i just went at it ... tried a bit of everything ... took some with a big gob of soil ... bare rooted some.. just to look at whats under there ... potted a few if i had pots and media around [gave them away as garden gifts if they lived] and most importantly.. left some.. in case my mad scientist experiments failed ... stuff that is usually deferred until fall ... or very early spring .... its all about a full sun plant.. and its water needs in the heat of the summer ... so if you manage water properly .. you can probably overcome it all ... now listen close ... you sound like a newb ... its supposed to be -23 here in MI tonight ... and you are talking like summer is already here ... even in CA.. ITS NOT HERE ... in fact... i would think your current status is not much different than my fall ... the sun is low in the sky ... so the soil will hold water for the transplant... days are mild ... and nights cooler ... so i would bet you can go for it ... all this.. and i have no idea what your plant is ... and am too lazy to look it up ... its all about.. turning your thumbs green by experimenting ... just do some ... water deeply.. supplement such in summer... and i bet you win ... there is an iris forum ... but i dont know its current status.. some of them were upset with GW .. prior to the switch over.. posts are free.. so duplicate it over there ... good luck ... you are going to have to try hard to kill a TON of one thing ... lol ... NEVER let the over-abundance of info on the WWW stop you from simply trying .... you win some.. and you lose some .. so be it ... its called gardening.. in fact.. one definition of a green thumb.. is that you have killed every plant 3 times ... before you won the battle ... but pssst ... dont tell anyone.. most of us give up long before buying the plant 3 times ... lol .. and find things we cant kill ... lol ... ken

Hi Sue,
You are not being bossy at all. In fact it is excellent, welcomed advice. I only have 3 Iris' growing for their first season. They are mixed in among my perennial garden. I had to dig one up that didn't last the winter due to bulb rot, but surprisingly the root system was very large. Large enough to cause me to be concerned for the others that have hugh rhizomes and almost 3ft stalks full of blooms.
All this to say, I agree with alotting significant space for each rhizome. I saw a clip on you tube that talked about planting them in a triangle shape. I'm going to try that. Finding spare time is not a problem, but if I keep going at the rate I am, space may be!

What hath that enabling Aliska wrought here lol? Look at all those vids I missed! Good job finding them and posting the links, will try to watch as many as possible.

I'm rather new to iris, and last year got an insert in my gilberthwild catalog for Cooley's and wanted to order some but things got away from me and just got two from Am Meadows instead. I don't know how I managed to remember the name and think to look on youtube.

Some crazed poster (no offense intended) alerted me to the joy of Siberians. Ha ha. Now I'm getting an order ready after just ordering a few more bearded iris from Wild's. I know they don't have the best rating, but I've had pretty good luck with them so far.

P.S. (ducking). I don't plant mine 2' apart, planting spots are at a premium in my small yard. So my punishment is that I have a huge clump that are too big for where I put them and will have to divide them. I think I'll put them all where it doesn't matter so much and move something a little less robust but colorful there.

Nobody told me when I started all this craziness that I'd not only be planting things, but digging half of them up and moving them around.
