Pam, I had two gold bracelets that I never wore. Ever. I'm not really big on jewelry. One was 18k and the other 14k. I had them appraised and then I put them on Used Victoria which is like Craigslist. I was contacted by a man that buys gold. He offered me $1200.00 and I took it.

That was 18 months ago. Imagine what I would get now.

Just make sure you contact a reputable person. Get a couple of estimates.

I'd hold onto the silver coins too.
I know what you mean about figuring out what's gold. Some costume jewelry from the fifties and sixties looks kind of big and junky, but it's really gold.

I recently had my wedding diamond reset in a new setting. The jeweler said they would pay me top dollar for my old setting, but when I picked up the new ring they offered me $18 for my "scrap gold".

I kept the old ring. It HAS to be worth more than $18.

We have sold some of both gold and silver although not all since the reason we have the stuff is in case of turmoil. We never try to hit a peak. When, or if, we sell is decided on our cost basis. It made sense, to us, to take some profit.

Well, if I had any, I'd probably sell it, but I'm not much for jewelry, so the only thing I have that is "real" is my wedding ring.

CME, the world's largest gold futures owner, raised margins 22% today. Combined with lower than expected jobless claims & apparent resolve of the SocGen debacle in France has equities up almost 500 points & gold falling over $35.00/ounce today. Also, the 30-year bond auction was a bit of a dud.

The increase in gold margins is expected to pop some of the volitility from the gold market. It has today but who knows about tomorrow. I've got whiplash from trying to follow what's happening.

If you've just got a bit of old jewelery...personally, I'd sell it. But, I'm not a big risk taker. Bird in hand worth two in bush sorta thing, I guess.

As of today 14k jewelry gets about a thousand bucks per ounce. I just put together some old and broken stuff and was searching for the best place to sell it. My mom managed a large jewelry store for a long time, so I have a bit of it sitting around. Not a good time for buying jewelry, but good news is that if you have older stuff to get rid of, you may get more than you paid for it.

Goodbye to my former wedding band! Glad I didn't chuck it in the river as I threatened to do.

They will give you the market price , minus a precentage for handling.
The same with Silver.

Ask around or make phone calls.
Ask how and how much they pay. What precentage they deduct from market price.

Pam, you've been reading my mind about selling some odds & ends! I'm trying to think of a comeback for your wedding ring, but frankly, selling it for cold cash is your best revenge! LOL

Depends on what you spend the cash from the ring? That could be even better revenge, than just selling it. But selling it is a good start!

Trying to think what I could buy that he would have hated. I guess that's just about anything since he was a major cheapo.

I am so glad you asked this. It looks like I could sell my unwanted band and one chain for about $600. There is a car repair I've wanted, but haven't needed. At least those jokers were able to help me out later on in life (in more ways that just the few good memories and life learning).

I saw something on tv last night about a woman who was gathering up all the gold items from two previous marriages and selling them. I think the topic was actually about "wedding bling". Now I just have to figure out the best place to sell these bad memories. The diamond in my engagement ring isn't even the original. The original fell out and was lost. I felt horrible about that. Tried to find it, but it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Remember that most jewelry is not 100% gold by weight. 24K is 100% gold, so 14K is 14/24 or .585 or 58.5% gold. So that will affect the price, minus the markdown.

If you have a vintage piece, you might compare the price it will get for weight vs. what it might get sold as jewelry.

Okay, I sold my bag and have a report for you. Got $27.87 per gram for 14k, about $863.97 per troy ounce. I'm very pleased. The place was busy with folks selling stuff. I called in advance and got pricing before I went. I figure what I purchased the old pieces for back in the 80s and 90s, my gold appreciated over 100%. I consider what I sold "scrap" due to twisted chains, dented hoop earrings, out of date designs, etc. Now I'll wait until gold is way down again before I "stock up" again, LOL. If you are selling a wedding band, it's going to be between 3-10 grams worth - so appx $84 - $278 at this place at today's price.

Wow, Gina, you did well. I went through some of my jewelry and found the same as you -- one earring with no mate, one broken earring, stuff I haven't worn in ages, stuff with bad karma. The other thing I need to think about is silver coins. Have a bunch of those, too. Anyone who is thinking about burglarizing my house -- I have three big snarling Dobermans.
