need new scanner

I cannot get my scanner that I have had for 7 years to work. I need a new easy one. This is just for my home. I like the copy feature and I scan the odd article from papers or photos occasionally.

Can anyone recommend a model without too many bells and whistles.

I have a "Canon LiDE 80" for quite a few years not used very often but is easy to use.

I like Canon. I have an HP flat bed but it has a mind of it's own and I cannot do exactly what I want to do, it was free so how can I complain? The other owner did not like it either LOL. I also have a Lexmark all in one, what useless pile of junk that is.

Today the all-in-one printer/scanner seems to be the way to go but I prefer the flatbed scanner.

Well absolutely no one should be online without adequate protection these days, too many scoundrels out there by far. The 2 most popular seem to be Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. Be careful installing and stay with the free version, Malwarebytes is free but does not appear to say so as you install. I run one or the other perhaps weekly, more if I feel I have visited doubtful places. That is a very smart move taking your scanner when visiting rellies, at least that way they feel safe in that the photos remain in there possession. Also you get the chance to discuss each and perhaps make notes because no one thought to write on the backs of the photos. On the printing issue have you considered having them done for you? This can be done online at a large number of places including your local supermarket and/or pharmacy. You then collect them the next day or whatever the rules are at any given location. This to me is cheaper than using your own ink and I think their ink quality is somewhat better than we get for our printers. I found scanning slides very trying but that was a few years ago and the equipment was not as good as we have now. You say the scanner is expensive and no doubt it is. But when I started the local computer joint charged $10 for the first scan and $8 for any others done at the same time. It made sense to buy a scanner and save a bundle, you have to decide how many scans you need to do then decide on which route. Photo editing for tears, bends and scratches is very interesting but time consuming and a steep learning curve at the outset. I enjoy that stuff, in fact I just removed a no longer son in law from the middle of a family group for a lady.

It is interesting Pooh. Based on your post I downloaded and ran the program. At the moment this is still a BETA program, in other words it is being tested by those of us who elect to use it. Once all the kinks are worked out the final product will be available no doubt. On my computer it searched all 3 hard drive partitions and found 10 insecure programs and 4 end of life. However those tagged as end of life will not be removed, these are old programs I use and will continue to take the small risk they might pose. The live link to the right of each entry takes you to the needed update site for that particular program. It is one more program running in the background. Time wil tell if it stays on my computer but it is an interesting program

I have two Canon Printer/scanners. Both Pixma models (approx $120.00). They came with OmniPage SE free. This is an optical scanning software which is so easy to use. I use this heavily in my work (medical insurance). It scans documents into Word, where you can edit. Or you can edit right in the software itself. I love this software. I believe it comes with every Canon Printer/scanner. Jane

Susan, I just now saw this -- on page 4 of the forum, and it's nearly 1:30 a.m. so it's now Wednesday... I've never taken this scanner out of the box! So, I had to push all of the stuff off of the top of it (horizontal surfaces do NOT stay clean for more than about 10 minutes if I'm anywhere in proximity). The box has been on the floor under my desk for at least two years, but now that you mention it, it very well could be three (or four! - gads, I hope it hasn't been more than that, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised). Anyway, from what it says on the outside of the box (at least what I can see from this angle), it's a "Visioneer One Touch 9320 USB" Aha! The packing slip was still on the outside of the package (I ordered it online and it was delivered...) The ship date was 02/13/2004. My how time flies when you're having fun! Let's see... it has 400 x 3200 dpi optical resolution 48-bit Color (recognizes over 281 trillion colors); 5 Convenient OneTouch Buttons; Scans slides or a negative strip; Blazing fast Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Interface and cable (Compatible with USB 1.1 too!) Says it's Designed for Windows XP... The reason I chose this one is because it comes with the slide and negative adapter, and has other features that I wanted (at least at that time). My father was quite the photographer (always had a darkroom in the house); and I've got boxes and boxes of negatives and slides that I want to scan. When I bought this desk, I selected it specifically so I'd have a place to put the scanner. But, there isn't a clear horizontal space quite large enough for it right now. :-( Somewhere "out there" in the mess in the garage I have another scanner that I used to use (and it was very easy - you'll get the hang of it in no time at all), but that was with a different 'puter with Windows 98. When I went to Windows XP, I needed a new scanner, which is when I got the Visioneer... Guess this means I need to hold off on getting Vista, eh? ;-)

I have an HP all in one that has a flat bed scanner and I love it, super quiet plus it is a fax machine, I have several of the stand alone flat bed scanners piled up here taking up space all work but now that I have the all in one I don't use anything else.

I have a flatbed Epson, have had it for years without any problem, except learning to update it when I went from 98, to ME and then XP. That tells you how long I have had it. LOL

You didn't report what O/S you are using and at seven years it could be one of several. Be sure to read the system requirements on any item you are considering.

I use to personally promote for various reasons individual peripherals rather than all-in-ones. However, now that the prices for AIOs are much more reasonable I only suggest them. Having two peripherals capable of printing is a great convenience too. I have my printer configured to Fast Draft Greyscale for all my general printing and my AIO configured for quality printing. The tandem saves ink and to switch between the two is quite easy.

As a reminder, before you buy be aware of the cost for replacement ink cartridges. I have heard and read too many disappointments from users on that issue.

DA - or anyone else in America looking for ink. You have a national pharmacy chain who offer refills at most of their locations at seemingly reasonable prices. I cannot remember the name, sorry. Perhaps this might jog a memory

Thank you. Yes I personally was aware of Walgreens. Reputedly they do not service all makes, all models or at all stores.

I have never checked it for myself, but if a user was interested they should do their research to develop an informed decision.
