All round scanner suggestions please

Walnutcreek asked about a scanner for her photos.

I need one for photos and documents. Had an HP flatbed for about 10 years. It was great.

Any suggestions for one about $100. My Canon printer is in good shape so don't want to double up.

I have Windows 7.

Also, just noticed a nice site here for people with graphics and scanning questions that isn't used often but the advice is wonderful.

I would suggest an HP AIO even though you say you are not in search of a printer as you can have more than one printer attached to your system. All you have to do is either select when printing or designate the Canon as the default. That's the way I have mine set up and it works just fine; AIO and a Photosmart

And, if the Canon does fail you are prepared to continue with your work product.

Hi there, We're in MT too and we have a nearly year-round greenhouse. See the thread called 'my Riga greenhouse' for pictures of our setup and a rough idea of the yearly growing cycle. The Riga is a kit and was not exactly low-budget. So our latest experiment this year was to build a small poly-covered structure as a season extender. This was nice and cheap but no way will it go year-round. But if you are handy and have access to old windows or something you could probably get by without spending too much.

I've only seen pictures of Princess Anne, but here is how David Austin describes her color: " The young flower is deep pink, almost red, gradually fading to a pure deep pink as the bloom matures. The undersides of the petals have a pleasing hint of yellow." I personally like roses that go through a series of color changes. Molineux is another Austin rose that can bloom anything from apricot pink and cream to golden apricot and bright yellow to mellow yellow and cream. Fun to see what color it will be each day. No lavender in Princess Anne, according to DA. However, other sources mention the attractive lavender-purple shades the blooms pick up as the bloom ages. One virtue Princess Anne has that is very important in my garden--it is rated as "very disease resistant." She also seems to be a really good bloomer. If I had any room left in my garden, this is one rose for sure that I would plant. I'm looking forward to those pics! Kate

When my remodel is done, my DW will be at the end of a run, next to the wall. It will probably add a minute, maybe two, to the unload time as all but the daily dishes/cutlery/glassware will be a tad farther of a walk to put away. But I don't care as the advantages will totally outweigh the disadvantages. I disagree with your KD. Strongly. I currently have my DW between my sink and range and it is the most hated thing in my kitchen. Everybody hates it, not just me. And when I say everybody, I mean my parents (who owned this house before me), my sister and her entire family, and my entire family. Plus all our kid's spouses. That's 14 people who have all voiced hatred for the DW placement. When my niece's husband, who was a chef before he became an engineer, heard we were remodeling the kitchen actually called me up to remind me to move that damn DW. And he's only cooked in it a few times. I remember he commented that it's poor placement from both a chef's and engineer's perspective (for whatever that's worth, lol). That is the only time he's actually ever called me. At the time, I didn't know where else to put it but the good folks here guided me to the new location. In fact, if the DW placement was good to begin with, I would probably have just redecorated my kitchen instead of remodeling. Of course, I'm getting other good things out of the remodel (like a prep sink) but I'm pretty frugal and would have probably saved the expense of it all if the DW placement hadn't been so annoying. If you use the sink on the window wall for prepping most often because you're facing the fabulous view (and who wouldn't?), the DW will NOT be able to be left open for immediate loading. You will need to keep the door closed most of the time and pop it open to load. If you're prepping and someone is loading/unloading or even just popping it open quickly to pop something in, it often coincides with the moment I need to get some water for my prepping. If you had a much longer counter between sink and cooktop, it might make some sense. But you don't. It will be crowded. And note that I have 54" between sink and range so I have more space to move over when that DW door is open. You have only 39". 36" is the MINIMUM recommended by the NKBA. You really can't afford to lose work space there if you want to use it for prepping. Of course, you will have the option of moving over to the other sink to do that but then that also adds extra unnecessary steps. And if you are prepping and have to move over for someone to do stuff with the DW, you might as well move all your prep work there because it also cuts into the available counter space unless you don't mind leaning instead of standing in front of what you're prepping. I don't understand the view argument. If you use your DW properly, as DW manufacturer's recommend, you'll be spending little time at the sink as you should scrape, not rinse, before loading. Washing fruit and veg doesn't take long. I wish I could remember the statistics exactly but studies have shown that prep time is something like 70% of the time spent in the kitchen with the remainder divided between cooking (like when you're standing at the stove, not counting unattended oven time) and cleaning up. So the majority of your time will be in the prep area, not in front of the sink or at the DW. For that short period of time, you won't miss the view. Ha! Can you tell I feel strongly about this? It's your kitchen. I would never do it in my kitchen. I hope you won't regret your decision.

I am so sorry to hear about your mother . Here's what I had to do for mom's funeral . I was traveling to Louisiana pulling the rv when I got a call from my sister that the funeral home needed the pictures emailed to them immediately so they could create the video and the memory books and the framed picture . I had all of my pictures . I sat in my passenger seat in the truck going down the road and took pictures of the pictures on my phone ! I then emailed all of those to the funeral home . I was so afraid it would be terrible but honestly they were fine no one knew they were pictures of pictures . So you could do that too and a much better job sitting still at a table ! They can be emailed or you can send them to a photo place for printing , Walmart , CVS , all sorts of places can do it . So thinking out side of the box might be the best option .

You can scan photos on any scanner but if you want one that will do slides and negatives you need one like this Epson. I really like the Epson photo scanner I have but it is no longer available.

bob414, Thanks for posting. I read an article on that scanner and they said the V30, I believe is available. And, no it can't do slides and negatives but is highly rated still on Amazon. Thanks for backing up the review.

I think scanners have come about as far as they can right now so any brand in a particular price range would do the job.

As we are 2 years into Windows 7 it would seem very unlikely that there is still old stock out there not designed to run on Win7.

I also have the V300 Photo as well....it's very dependable and user friendly. I had an ancient Epson and decided to go that direction again.

Thanks for all the help. I went with the Epson V30 at $59 and applied for a credit card at Amazon that gave me a $50 rebate. Price $9.00 with 2 day delivery.

Are you going to try two printers? If so, did the new printer come with a USB cable?

Damccoy, you know I always value your opinion. I was about to order your suggestion and pfmastin suggested a scanner and I got a good deal (see above) on an Epson.

At some point I know I will have and AIO and it could have been this week when you reasoned it out for me.

The Scanner is HERE so will try it out. Amazon sure works hard their money (so hard for it honey, wink wink). It came with free shipping in less than 24 hours.
Let's see how I do with connecting it.

Just wanted you to know in case another request comes your way that day one it terrific.

It brought back to life an old photo that had darkened and I sent it to the people in the photo.

So, this was a big deal. Little blessings and great people. I just love when things work out well.

Ellie, I think you will be very happy with your Epson. I have an older Epson Perfection 3170, no longer available, and it has been really great. So many features, and yet easy to use. Congratulations on your purchase. Now be careful with that CC!

Oh, grandms, I thank you. I am having a good time putting together pictures of folks who have passed on and I miss.I feel this is the year I honor them on Pinterest of all places. Un huh. One of my boards is for them.
It's that sort of thing. I need to connect and ressurect them. Hope you know what Pinterest is.

ps: I rmember in the late 1970s and the company I worked for had a new OCR machine. That thing was a disaster and yet state of the art. Numbers where there were supposed to be letters and really no help at all.

Now I have a scanner for $9 and change if you read above. Guess that was 32 years ago at least. Seems like yesterday. Ha ha. Thanks again for you good wishes.

I have just been exchanging pictures with an old high school classmate. Having lots of fun trying to remember and identify different people. I have probably thousands of pictures I need to scan and copy to disks so that all in my family have copies of old pictures of ancestors. I'd better hurry or I'll be one of the ancestors no longer around. LOL!

I think that's great to share them with a good friend and tell stories.

Copying pictures to discs is sure easier than suitcases of albums. In my case, I'm not sure anyone cares about the pictures and will get thrown out without a look. Life goes on. I just will have around me what I like to look at for now.

It is a long process of going thru albums and I have done one go round when I had time to myself and could think back on the pictures and bring out new memories.

I am glad you are enjoying your project.I think some of your pictures would make nice gifts to those who are in them.

Ellie, what a sweet deal you got! Good for you. I know it is too late for you, but others looking for copier/printer/scanner/fax should definitely look into the HP Officejet. I also have a tiny HP printer only that I have hooked to my laptop in my room if I want to print something from my laptop and am too lazy to get out of bed! I have had the best luck with them, I work them into the ground, and always buy another. And their ink cartridges are easy to find (although I am sure other brands are as well, I have just never had to buy a different brand!) and you can even refill them yourself.
