Cloning desktop to new laptop.

First off I'm soon going to need a bigger HDD for the desktop. So killing two birds with one stone, I figure on buying a new HDD and an enclosure for the desktop.

Everything I am reading about cloning says to install the new HDD in the computer - but wouldn't an external enclosure work?

Assuming the above works. I want to clone the desktop to the external HDD. Then plug the external HDD into the laptop and clone it to the laptop. After cloning, boot from the Windows CD and tell it to do a repair install on the laptop. This should leave all settings while installing the necessary settings for the laptop.

After that, I can remove the HDD from the enclosure and install in the desktop.

Am I on the right track with this idea? If not, any suggestions?
