Looking for help re finding a cordless phone

Our cordless phone finally went belly up. We have a land line in the bedroom, but it's nice to have the cordless in the TV room.

We want a basic cordless phone.

Just one cordless phone, not a gaggle of them where you can put one in every room.

We do not need one with an answering machine.

We do want one that we can turn all the way off, so we won't hear it ring.

I found one at Target online, called an accessory handset. Would that mean an accessory to our landline, or an accessory to other "like" phones by the same manufacturer? I get all tied up with semantics and such sometimes!

We no longer get Consumer Reports, so cannot look things up unless we go to the new (crowded, difficult to park) library. Ratings of different phones on amazon showed lots of problems with the battery recharging.

Any help would be much appreciated! Our budget is $25 or less.

Sooz

That phone is an extra hand set for a phone you already have.
See the link....for a phone with one hand set.

If you want a phone that's not complicated, get one that doesn't have a bunch of other things built into it, such as an answering machine and speakerphone. Those things make it harder to figure out how to use. There are a lot of good cordless phones on the market. A lot of people say they like the ones made by Panasonic.

IowaCommute, it's a phone not a heart valve. Honestly not trying to be rude, but I have had in the past 2 Pottery Barn phone for years and they worked great. Although I doubt very much that Pottery Barn made it, they probably just design the outside (or copy the design, ðÂÂÂ) and brand it and one of the phone companies make it. ETA: you do bring up a good point about keeping the landline. We have a landline but it's through Verizon fios so it does have a limited battery life in case of power outage. It's something everyone should look into, what happens to your basic utilities in case of long term power outage. This post was edited by kiko on Mon, Dec 1, 14 at 16:00

Need help - re home alarm system and phone system
Q

Shayle 40 glass break sensors? Wow - that is a lot. Are they planning to mount the senors directly to the glass - or are they using a ceiling/wall mount sensor that can cover several windows in one area? I have about 12 glass break sensors in my home - and it's a good size house (5000+ sq ft). For example - one glass break sensor in the dining room ceiling covers 3 large windows. If you use the Honeywell 1625 Glass break sensor - which comes in several different styles - you can reduce the number of glass break sensors. The 1625 has a range of 25 feet. You might check out this site: http://www.aesecurity.com which is where I purchased all of my alarm parts. The site is useful since they provide data sheets on all of the sensors and you can read about their capabilities (and see what they cost). Be very very careful when dealing with alarm companies - they make their money by charging you per sensor or per zone - so the more sensors or zones they can cram in - the more they make. As far as zones - you can have multiple sensors tied to a single zone. For example - I have 3 doors on the front of the house where one can enter - the front door, the door through the garage, and then a side patio door. All 3 of these doors have a magnetic sensor - but they are tied to 1 zone. This is commonly called "sensors in series" or "in-series" connections. Obviously- the more sensors you can group in series, the fewer zones you need on the controller and that can allow a smaller alarm panel or fewer zone expander modules. Another thing to watch out for is the fire monitoring. In my first house, the alarm company refused to tie the alarm system into the house smoke detectors. Instead, they charged me a few hundred dollars for an additional smoke detector that was only tied into the alarm system - and not connected to the house smoke detectors. It was a bunch of bull. A good alarm company can make a tiny little device that allows the 9 volt traveler wire in your house smoke detectors to be monitored (it's the red or yellow wire on the smoke detector). This little traveler wire is what is used to set off all house smoke detectors when only one detects smoke. The alarm company can monitor this signal. If they tell you they can't do it due to code - have them install it after the final inspection. It is a lot cleaner to use your existing home smoke detectors then to have 2 sets of detectors. The Vista 20P panel might be too small for your system if each of the sensors has a dedicated zone. However, if some of these sensors are grouped in series, then it might be fine. In my house, I have 12 glass break sensors (each one on a seperate zone), 10 magnetic sensors on doors (3 zones), 3 CO sensor each on a seperate zone, 7 motion sensors each on a seperate zone, and 1 fire zone. A grand total of 25 zones and 32 sensors. I also have 3 keypads. I used the Vista 20P and 3 zone expander modules. In the future I paln to add a few more glass break sensors in the basement as well as some exterior IR sensors.

$25 is OK for a single station wireless phone.

You will still need to hard wire to a phone jack for that station, but the phone will be wireless. For the use of the phone in only one room, wired or wireless pnone may not make that much difference. You will also need to be near a power outlet for the phone to work. A wired phone will not need power.

Best to go to a store and try out to see if you like how the phone handles, sound quality, and looks.

Don't worry too much about the battery, it can be replaced very easily. They are not expensive. You can get them on eBay or Radio Shack.

Look for the ones which use Li-ion bastteries. They last longer.

That's a PITA.

Look for a Panasonic. Ours have lasted many many years with NO battery replacement. VTech and Uniden were the worst. Before I got the Panasonic about 12 years ago, we tried the other brands. Both had batteries that needed replacement after a year. The Panasonics have never needed new batteries

I have a Uniden...the "base station" also is an answering machine and it has an auxillary charging station. Originally the plan was to have one phone upstairs....but the signal didn't carry that far from the base station, so I got another one station cordless ( a basic $9.99 WalMart special) for upstairs and keep ont of the handsets for the other phone...wherever...in the kitchen, by the computer, on the deck...and switch out when it needs recharging.

Well eventually the batteries stopped holding a charge for more than an hour....so I priced out new phones....would cost about $60 for the similar unit....but new batteries cost about $8 each. While that's a lot to spend for a $10 phone, it's not for what I have....so for less than $20 I refurbished my phones.

Most cordless phone batteries are simple plug/unplug a few seconds of no-tools work

eBay sells a ton of them starting at $2.00, shipping included.

ni-cad batteries do not hold charges that well, li-ion batteries and ni-mh batteries are much better.

But phones that work for 12 years without any battery problems/replacement are the best, wouldn't you agree?

Of course I agree.

However, when it comes to the science of rechargeable batteries, it may not be that simple.

Battery life for nicad batteries is dependent on the user's operating habits.

"---Let's say you only use 50% of the power of this Ni-Cd battery , then you plug the battery back to the charger right the way, After few times, the battery will remember this guy only need 50% power from me.So let's just quit the section he doesn't need. Now you only have half of the power of that battery. Very soon, you will have nothing left, and the problem is not reversible. Once they are gone, they are gone forever.---"

This condition does not apply to the other two battery types I have mentioned.

Mine didn't work for all of 12 years with out new batteries....but easily 8 years.
The difference in sound quality of a "good" phone is very noticable. I have 6 phones, 4 cordless and two wired ones....that will work when the electricity goes out.
A couple of those cordless are El-Cheap-o kinds....and don't sound very good....but for the basement and in the solarium, they are fine.
