Oven's temperature sensor is off???

My oven and stove-top ranges are all working fine, yet the temperature sensor for the oven is inconsistently off. When it was under the set temperature, I tried setting the temperature higher, to compensate the difference. However, it was not consistently going under; it went too much over than the higher temperature. There is no telling when it's going to be above or below the set temperature. Thinking of replacing the appliance, yet everything else is working fine. How much would it cost to hire an electrician to fix the sensor, including the part? Am I able to change the sensor myself, if I don't hire a tech?

Thermostats have a 'differential' - this is the variance from the set point. If the differential is 'wide' then you will have greater temperature swings.

Since you say it's not consistent the thermostat may be erratic.

The thermostat goes from the over control knob in to the oven. If you look closely you may see the capillary tube and sensing bulb in the upper back or sides.

You need to contact an appliance repair person.

Glad to hear you got it going again! If you do ever need to invest in something new, try Onset Technologies http://www.onsetcomp.com/ They are used a lot by green, high performance houses where they need to monitor humidity and heat levels. They have a lot of options. Also, there is a new product called WiMotos that is just about to get on the market. They recently had a hugely successful Indiegogo campaign and raised a ton of money to produce their products. What is great about them is they are not WiFi which drains batteries really fast. They use bluetooth instead. They have tons of different options you can use and plan on creating a bunch more. http://www.wimoto.com/ We have LaCrosse temperature and humidity sensors and an Onset Hobo data logger that measures light intensity, humidity, temp, etc. but we have not used it yet because our greenhouse is still under construction. http://www.onsetcomp.com/products/data-loggers/u12-012 We did pledge for the WiMotos and will get four motes whenever they ship. Unfortunately, we are spread across three different types of data logging equipment and not sure which we want to fully commit to. -They all have their advantages and shortcomings. We'll try them all out and let you know what we find out once our greenhouse is in full swing. It would be great if they were compatible enough that we could use all three different brands and bring the data into one central logging program.

A sensor will not break and then "fix itself". If it is indeed "Sensor related" it will be a bad connection to the sensor, I don't know if it uses connectors for the sensor(recall the problem with Mojavean's coffee machine)? "Just about" All (never say never) intermittent problems like you are seeing are caused by a bad connection. I was a Service Engineer for over 40 years and owned my own company for 16 Years---So I can "Knowing Say" "Been There, Done that". These guys are doing what we call "Shotgunning". Taking a "Wag or a Swag" at what they think the most likely problem is, due to the number of the error code. Myself, I would leave it alone, and then if it does break again, hopefully You won't get "Shotgun Sam" Again. I certainly appreciate your concern about new sensors throwing the oven/ovens off, as from all the post we have read, there seems to be no way to calibrate these ovens, once they have left the factory. I've never used it, but our Noritz tankless heater has a tub-fill type setting where I believe it'll alarm when a set volume has been dispensed. Since you can adjust the output temperature down enough to avoid mixing (ours is set at 105F, which is plenty hot for our needs), that's all you need. I've also put in batch flow meter systems in industrial settings. You don't need a level sensor in the tub. You just set up a dispense volume in the controller, and the solenoid shuts off flow when that volume has passed through the flow meter. That and a mixing valve (or a right-temperature water supply) and you'd be good to go. The dispense volume could be pre-set. That said, the old adage is that it's hard to make something foolproof b/c fools are too ingenious.

I think the probes, themselves, are made by one outfit for all the companies. You can call the help desk. If you get the right person, he may research the issue and get back to you. You've explained something important, to me. I used the probe a couple of times but it was way under. I thought it was my ineptitude in placement. I do better by time/instinct/looks than temperature with a standard thermometer too. I wonder if they purposefully calibrate them under so that you won't burn the food and blame them? If I knew that it was a consistent number off, I wouldn't have an issue with just setting the oven to a translated number. I'll be interested in what you find out.

It may take upwards of 30 minutes for the temperature to stabilize from a cold start, the full mass of the oven cavity and interior air to reach equilibrium with the control differential.

You didn't cite your brand and model. Oven temp sensors can be an electronic component (thermistor) or an electro-mechanical thermostat.

Whether you can DIY a repair depends on your ability and experience, no way for anyone to judge that from afar. Some amount of disassembly is typically required. Don't change a part without confirming the piece of question is bad.

I looked at the owners' manual for your stove, and it appears to have controls somewhat like my stove. When the heat simply would not start, I called a repair person (around $50 for a service call). He did what he called a "hard reset." He unplugged it for about 10 minutes then plugged it back in. It worked. Since that incident, I've also successfully done this with the refrigerator, washer, and garage door opener. It's free and worth a try.

frigidaire es300 Try again. That's apparently a marketing label, not a model number. A parts search brings up a printer, chainsaw, and two camcorders ... or a choice of 24+ Frigidaire/Electrolux range models.

no wonder i couldn't find the model online whenever I used es300, which is on the user's manual.

Wow, just unplug and replug..... somehow electric stuff seems to be like to play this game, my internet modem is always like that :-)

I have JA double ovens that started fluctuating about two months ago, then went out altogether. I did the hard reset at the breaker, but still get an error when I try to pre-heat. I just ordered a new temperature sensor and will give that a try.
