Soaking tub faucet with hand shower.... Do I want a diverter???

I am looking at deck-mount faucets for a soaking tub, and want a hand-shower option in case anyone wants to bathe a baby there some day. I see that most sets do NOT have a diverter valve, but some do.

I wonder if having the diverter valve lessens the likelihood of the hand shower dripping while filling the tub. Does anyone have any experience with this they can share?

I would prefer the cleaner look of less hardware, but don't want a dripping shower head!

As a follow-up, can anyone give input on faucets by Danze, Delta, Fontaine or Schon? They each have a nice modern-looking model under $400 that look attractive, but I wonder about quality.
