The contents of my Inbox has disappeared

Outlook Express occasionally freezes on me, to the point where I have to crash the computer in order to reload the program. (It won't end any other way, nor will the computer respond to the Restart command.) That happened a few minutes ago, and this time when Outlook Express opened up both the Inbox and Sent folders were empty.

Both folders had too many emails in them (approximately 600 in the Inbox and over 2,000 in Sent). Was this the reason it's been crashing? Is there anything I can do to get some of themÂat least the more recent arrivalsÂback?

Use the windows search function with advanced checked and search for .dbx

Hopefully you can find them and maybe adjust paths or import.

When it crashed did you allow it to run check disk? If not you might try running that before you do too much.

I my hasty post last night, I forgot to say... Thank you Isabella for your comment two or three years or so ago that set me on the path to this green shed! It might not be the outcome you intended, but it's how it ened up being expressed after a couple of years of mulling it over in the context of what I'm trying to achieve in the garden. We think the green shed is a big improvement, so thank you. I suspect I confused Isabella, and others, when I noted on my drawing that there is a chokecherry tree (red fruit) near the shed, but did not include the chokeberry (black fruit) on the list. So I suspect that there may have been confusion on what tree we moved to the bed in front of the shed. I had forgotten about the 'Autumn Magic' chokeberry until I was looking around at what I could move to that spot and walked past the poor thing under the edge of the pine by the shed and had an Aha! moment :-) The red chokecherry is about 8-10 to the right of the shed but closer to the back fence. It is planted in a small area that gets some sun - a pine on the neighbour behind us' property came down two years ago, so there is a bit more sun back there than there used to be. I don't think the chokecherry fruit will show in the same 'frame' as the shed but the autumn color should be visible in a few years when the tree gets bigger. My tree list also omitted a witchhazel we planted this spring in the bed along the back fence, near the back of the shed on the left side.

Judy--there is a Tampa chapter of the AMerican Begonia Society. They had their first judged begonia show in late February if I recall right. Marcia--the word "dignified" is the level of respect and development of horticultural endeavors. Comparatively speaking, there is much less experience with plants and/or maintenance issues with landscaping companies and their employees (illegal workers is yet another issue)...and,the quality of programming and other aspects of local botanical gardens is one that combines visitor needs with education and display and overall non-profit health. I have not encountered so much scoffing at "gardening" than in FL while mixing with people at various events--it's as if horticulture is equated with only rich people and then, only a subclass would dare to do it for them. I've also read of many city-governemnt based initiatives that seem to sound "groundbreaking" or "modern advances" that are off the mark (Port St. Lucie in particular!) It's like they are given a brochure and they buy a program or idea and have no grasp of hte context for its use. Perhaps another interesting observation is how belligerent many people are to the whole water restriction thing in south FLorida (is it same elsewhere?). Darn near EVERYONE has an excuse (placing blame on the water district, not me, I don't wanna, catch me if you can, blah blah). I have experienced droughts in other regions with same enforced restirctions and all, and in FLorida I've seen a lot of arrogance and indifference, even with governments. This holds true to a lot of professionals that give misleading info publicly about info that tends to blatantly undermine known facts about what plants need more water, when to water and how much. In a nutshell, there is less overall population that holds high regard or dignity with a passion of horticulture and the closely related good land stewardship and good (proven) maintenance practices. Go to other regions (more like regional pockets), and nearly everyone looks to a single botanical garden source as the leader or as a world-class example of a organization, etc. Or, all understand the need for say, shade trees, or drought-tolerant plants and thus it is easier to locate these plants in nurseries. Lots of things comparatively speaking make FL such a drought for the horticultural passion that dominates other areas of the US and Canada. "landscaping (horticulture)" is a business in FLorida, not a passion or lifestyle across the board.

This is sort of a low grade form of AI. It doesn't learn but it executes directions. But garbage in and garbage out. I hate that all modern appliances now have digital functions. More to break and not work well, faster to break and more expensive replacement. There's a guy in my county who is one of the country's top experts on old stove restoration, including coal, gas and wood. He would be my "go to" guy if I had the right space . . . And then there's that whole conspiracy to ban gas stoves . . . flame too simple and easy to fix for modern "consumer driven" (read consumption) economy. At some point electric will have to take over though. I hope not in my life time . . . my little cabin in the woods with a woodstove is seeming less and less practical for elder me . . . We're pondering getting a wood stove for our porch, a small one . . . but not really for cooking other than heating stuff on top of it . . . there are some multi-function ones with warming areas but they take up too much space . . .

Thanks, Mikie. When it started up after crashing, it didn't run check disk. I remember in the past if one of the computers shut down improperly, it would always do some sort of scan. I haven't seen it on this computer in quite some time.

I don't see check disk in the System Tools folder. Does it go by another name?

I didn't find any files with that extension.

In my experience, the *.dbx files will still be there with the lost emails in them.

To recover them try this:
Open OE
Create 2 new folders: inbox-2 and sent-2
Open each folder (yes, they will be empty)
Close OE
Locate the *.dbx files
Delete > and >
Rename > to >
Rename > to >
Open OE
Open each of the new folders. Your emails will probably be there.

I suspect that it was not the number of emails contained in each folder, but rather that the folders were not compacted (to remove the spaces created by deleting emails).

If you have recovered your files by this method, then immediately compress all your folders. To do this, choose FILE - FOLDERS - COMPACT ALL FOLDERS. It may take some time, depending on how many folders/emails you have.

Good luck and let us know how things are going. I have 2 other things to try if this doesn't work.

Thanks, Candy. I followed your instructions up to "Locate the *.dbx files." How do I locate them? I tried going to Start --> Search, but that yielded nothing, even after I specified to search the whole computer. (It makes no sense to me that not even the few new emails showed up in that search.)

Please let me know where I should be looking for them. I appreciate your help!

I think you may have a setting that must be changed to allow you to see all files and all files extensions.

Open My Documents
Click on TOOLS - Folder Options
Click the VIEW tab
Scroll down to the section for HIDDEN FILES ...
Make sure SHOW HIDDEN FILES ... is checked
UNCHECK - Hide extension ...
UNCHECK - Hide protected ...
Close out of those windows.

Now to find the *.dbx files:
START - SEARCH - Files or Folders
Type:
*.dbx
as part of the file name (that is star dot dbx)

Hope this gets you going ; )

Candy, you were so good to take the time to instruct me, and I followed those instructions to the letter. But I came up empty-handed. I think it must be a lost cause.

Maybe it's not so bad. I'm sorry to lose my Save folders, especially emails from my kids. But it's a lesson, isn't it? I have a tendency to hang on to too much and back up too little. I plan to do better with my fresh start.
