Growing a lemon tree from a grocery store lemon. Good idea or Bad
Comments (23)Growing most types of fruit from seed is generally a bad idea. There is a high chance the fruit will not be as good as the parent variety. For those of you who are not aware of how this works, in nature fruit species can have a lot of genetic diversity from generation to generation. When a good producing tree is found, it then gets propagated from cuttings. People usually do not want to take the trouble of growing a fruit tree from seed when they do not even know whether the fruit will be good. Generally though, lemons produce truer to seed than oranges do. Not talking about citrus here, but for fruit trees in general, it is theoretically possible to breed fruit that produces truer to seed, but it takes many more generations of breeding. These are often traditional heirloom varieties that have been around a long time. Whereas the seed from a Navel orange will not really result in a Navel variety, some of these heirloom varieties can essentially be continually propagated from seed. The terms "heirloom", "true to seed", and fruit "variety" can all be very relative and ambiguous terms....See MoreDo lemon bars need refrigeration overnight?
Comments (24)lramelow, you are half right. Cut onions are left sitting at places like hot dog bars and fresh onions are plopped right on top of the old ones. Snopes says this: Are cut bulb onions therefore a health scourge one must be on guard against? No scientific evidence points in that direction. What reports there are that tie onions to outbreaks of food poisoning almost exclusively name green onions (also known as long onions or scallions) as the culprit. Although both sorts could be exposed to e. coli and other nasties during their time in the ground or while being handled during the move to market, green onions are chopped up and eaten as is, whereas the paperish brown peel that covers bulb onions and which is discarded rather than ingested acts as a shield against contamination. The one instance we found that fingered bulb onions as the transmitter in a food poisoning case was the 1984 sickening of 28 people in Peoria, Illinois. Botulism was passed to those unfortunate souls by the sauteed onions used on a restaurant's "patty melt" (a cheeseburger on rye with sauteed onions). Mayo is acidic enough that it's probably not the culprit, especially commercial mayonnaise. The cut edges of onions are also acidic, from the sulfuric acid. I'd be more likely to blame the potatoes or the hard boiled eggs. Annie...See MoreFlorida lemons and Shaker Lemon Pie
Comments (22)Annie, I am all set to make this pie for tomorrow's dinner, but I am not sure about exactly how much to do tonight. You said, " unless you macerate the lemon slices for 24 hours, the pie turns out bitter." So, do I stop just after slicing and straining out the juice, or after boiling? Do they just sit out or should they be in the 'fridge? Mine will get a bit less than 24 hours at this point, but I guess that's better than 2 hours, right? I cannot wait to taste this pie. I've been salivating since you posted the pics and description. AND this will be my first time to abandon my standard BH&G cookbook pie crust and try Nathan's Never Fail Pastry....See MoreViking Refrigerators
Comments (1)Sorry to hear you got burned - unfortunate but not surprising. I remember when I first discovered the Viking brand at a home show where the big beautiful, colored ranges were on display. I thought I'd like one of those some day. Then when I remodeled my kitchen I started researching appliance quality and reliability and decided - no thanks. It always kind of cracks me up when real estate listings "brag" about Viking appliances - not a plus in my book. Or they say "high end" appliances and then I see they're Viking - no thanks....See Moremarlingardener
