Internet connection probs

I always have this problem with my very old laptop. (Not the one I'm using right now.) It's a wireless internet connection. It'll pick up wireless networks that aren't even mine. It picks them up from the neighborhood I guess. For some reason, it has an easier time getting signals from those than the right one that's right here in the house.

Any help please?

I forgot to mention that I deleted the networks which aren't mine.

I went to Wireless Network Connection Properties. Then, at the second part where networks are listed, where it says Preferred Networks, I deleted the networks which aren't mine.

But even though they're gone from there, they still show up on the top part where it says Available Networks.

Go into network connections (Start/Control Panel/Network Connections). Right click the icon for the wireless connection. Select View Available Wireless Networks. Along the left, there is an option Change the order of preferred networks. Select that. Under the Wireless networks tab, there's a window with preferred networks. Highlight each one that is not yours and click remove. After that, you will only automatically connect to your network.

They'll still show up as available networks because they're still there. You can't get rid of them, only your neighbors can (by getting rid of their wireless, which probably isn't going to happen). They're still there, but you won't connect unless you select one and connect to it.

Do you have an Internet service provider? Do you have a wireless router? If so, read p.32 of your manual. Here is a link that might be useful: Acer A210 manual.

Many readers here have limited experience and limited knowledge. I believe responses from the more knowledgeable people should avoid strong, unfounded biases. There's no place for doing that with a beginner level audience, they (like you) may not have the time, interest, or ability to reach their own conclusions. I don't make it a point to find issues to quibble about, but it does seem you don't like it when people don't share your opinions. I try to present balanced views, keeping in mind that some people may know nothing more than what they've read in this forum. MS Internet Explorer is reported to be the most widely used browser in governmental and business use. They take that responsibility seriously, because an awful lot of essential stuff relies on it. To suggest that some grandma somewhere should worry about using the latest update to play tic-tac-toe is simply silly. And no, I don't have to have the last word.

Nothing wrong with MSE, its fine. That remark by some Microsoft employee saying use some other a-v was dealt with and powers to be sort of reminded MS customers MSE and their other security programs were great and getting more aggressive with the adware/malware too in coming months. If you really want to try a new AV you might want to look at www.360Safe.com freeware that works.. Adblock in IE usually is a addon... click your gear, then 'manage add ons' and you should see it there in tracking protecting. Windows 7 & 8 have Trouble shooting in Control Panel... one of the items is IE and another you might look at is Networking. This post was edited by mikie on Fri, May 30, 14 at 5:28

You need to use the 'Forget This Network' option on any networks that won't connect, then recreate the connection. Should be under Settings (maybe Options), then Networks. Tap the right side of the network that you want to 'forget' and you should get the 'Forget This Network' option. I've never found a way to edit the connections. You will be prompted to re-enter the network key when you choose it from the available networks list.

that is why it is so so so important to make sure that your wireless networks are set up securely following the proper protocol and that you have extremely strong passwords both on your router and on your pc. All those people/networks you see, they are seeing you too if your's is not set up securely and they can jump right on your's like how your's is trying to get onto theirs. It is scary how many open wireless networks are out there.
