monitor does not light up

I have Windows XP. My computer is 4 years old and the monitor is acer brand and it perhaps 5 years old flat screen.

When I turn on my computer I can here windows going through its phases. My monitor green light is on but I can't get the monitor to ligt up until I turn it off 3 times. The first time turning it off I wait a few seconds then turn it on the picture starts to come on then it goes off. I try this 3 times then the third time the monitor will stay on. It has been doing this daily for 2 weeks. I turn the computer off at night time but do not turn off the monitor.

You might check the power plug where it connects to the rear of your monitor. Some are a vertical connection and over time there can be a tendency for the line to gradually disconnect.

While there it might be wise to check the signal cable connections in both the monitor and tower to be sure.

My gut reaction says the monitor is starting to go. You'd need another computer that's known to be good to confirm the problem. You might also want to disconnect and then reconnect the monitor cable and even reseat the video card (if applicable). It probably won't help but it only takes a few minutes.

Not surprised to hear that your tap water contains dissolved limestone. I'm pretty sure that Indiana was once part of the same inland sea that covered southern Wisconsin, where I live. Our ground water sits in beds of limestone formed after that inland sea dried up. Our tap water is hard, and not suitable for blueberries. If I forget and use untreated tap water on our blueberry shrubs, the leaves will first turn yellow, and eventually the shrub will die. It is possible to treat our tap water with acid, lowering the pH. I use a pH meter to get the chemistry right. It takes 6 fluid ounces of 5% white vinegar, from our local grocery store, to treat 4 gallons of our tap water. I have used other acids for this, but white vinegar works OK, is readily available, and also is inexpensive. If you have a rain barrel and rainwater collection system, you could avoid using tap water entirely. All of this might seem like a lot of attention for such a fine point. It is not. Blueberry shrubs must have correct pH to absorb nutrient. They will do pretty well with pH between 6 and 7, but they do much better with pH between 5 and 6. They will not survive drought conditions, so there will be occasions when irrigation is necessary to keep them going. Given decent soil, proper pH, and sufficient sunlight, blueberries are easy to grow. I hope you are successful.

Numerous driver incompatibilities and goofy settings (as described in the link by zep516) are among the common problems many Windows 10 updaters have experienced. One of my PCs had a manufacturer's message popup saying in so many words - "Don't upgrade this PC to W10, the drivers won't work and your PC will become inoperable" As described in another thread, problems like this are why the big (and well- informed) private and public employers intentionally DON'T update their IT software when there's no benefit to do so and a risk of problems. It's senseless. Can you roll back your PC to the earlier Windows version? That would be my recommendation.

For me, everything I put in my house has to have some meaning for me, and I hope this has meaning for you, but for me it does not strike a chord. A beautiful painting, something that is art and not just some print that they offer in five different sizes, would give color and movement to this area, with something at each side of the console to hide the cord. A wider piece of furniture would have looked nicer there and hidden the cords, but I'm sure some solution could be devised to hide them.

and cables can and do go bad you could try a different cable to see if that makes any difference.
Of course once you have everything up and working you could just leave it all on, mine stays on 24/7 unless it is storming or I am away traveling.

Thank you everyone for your help. I can always count on someone here to bail me out once again.

I have been a member of this board since the beginning even during the time that there was a yearly charge. I appreciate all of you that are so helpful.

At first look the monitor cable was tight but I got out my screwdriver and gave the plug another turn. This must have been it as i have shut the computer down 3 times and the monitor comes on each time.

If you turn off your computer at night, I would recommend that you also turn off the monitor. This way, you can boot up the computer and then turn on the monitor. It may be more power efficient to do it this way.

Just as a FWIW, I was having the same problem! So I pushed in all the cords I could reach, and also began turning the PC on before turning on the monitor.

I've only turned it on twice since, but ***so far*** one or the other seems to have solved the problem.

UPDATE:

I took my computer into my local shop. It turns out that it was the capacitier in the monitor. This had to be replaced.
