A new Book from Diana Gabaldon

I found out to night that the next book in the series of OUTLANDER is coming out on 9/22/2009. The title is AN ECHO IN THE BONE

I can't wait till I can read it. When I was coming back from Key West in June we stopped at a small shop to pick up a lamp for our neighbor , It was paid for but she didn't want it shipped since we were coming back we could pick it up. At the the shop where the lamp was, the owner had books for sale on a table out side. One of the books I looked at was The Drums of Autumn, a Diana Gabaldon Outlander series book. The owner said that she wished she could find the other books in the series.

I've read them all - most several times. My favs are still Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber. Even Voyager was worth reading a second time. However, I think they sort of go downhill from there, Drums of Autumn, Fiery Cross and Snow and Ashes were good, but not as good as the first ones. I will definitely read the new one, I still love the story and concept.

If you are looking for something in a similar vein, read The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane it is excellent!

Alexa, where did you find the The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane at? Most of the book stores here are either out of stock or late to stock any good reading for my taste. My interest varies widely since I read for pleasure. If anything can hold my interest for more than a few pages, I read it. Harlequin novels are just potato chips for my mind, I read them if there is not any thing else to read

One of the Sunset Container Gardening books the Herbal Yearbook The Lavender Garden Edible Landscaping by Creasey oh, but if you have Leptosperman (of any sort, rooted cuttings pleas!) I'd like that; also homemade soap or fallen antlers from the woods (I love them, and mine are degrading in the New Orleans rains. They make nice calciam additions to the soil!) and I can be tempted....try me. Gotta be something to live in New Orleans, though. And local folk, give me a ring-I will swap for hard-to-ship items too.

That's OK Deb, I'm a little slow myself, this will still be here tomorrow or next week or next month. It's odd, I've no doubt my cellar would be fine for winter storage of ferments, I just haven't done it yet. Probably the main reason for that is that fermentation has become as much or more a culinary technique to me as it is a preservation method. Example; I prefer two or three day old 'half sour' cukes over the 'full sours' (and keep using the same brine over and over, it just keeps getting better). It's become routine for me to rehydrate 2-3 Tbsp minced onion, add a little whey and let it ferment 2-3 days, and then add it to a crock pot of soup beans which provides a wonderful deep onion flavor to the beans. The main reason I would want to BWB canned tomato sauce or salsa or relish is to 'capture it' at the stage of it's prime flavor. I haven't tried that yet but intend to (though I DON"T like the idea of 'killing it'). Also, I've no doubt that 2-3 days fermentation to tomatoes would eliminate the need for the addition of any citric acid prior to processing, ph would be lowered from the lactic acid content. Any way, you've inspired me, I've now a new goal: ferment lots of season's end veggies from the 2013 garden and store them in the cellar (which is actually an offshoot room from the basement but should do well for winter storage of fermented foods). Recipe; it's more about method than recipe. I don't follow exact recipes much anymore, each batch of anything I make is always a little different, a character of it's own. The basic 'sauce' recipe is derived from a tomato pepper relish found in Sally Fallon's book, 'Nourishing Traditions', which incidentally if you don't have I very highly recommend it, it's chocked full of the latest nutritional findings that contradicts much of what is being espoused these days, sound traditional food wisdom from around the world, and lacto fermentation comprises a significant portion of it. Thus far the only fermented sauce I've used is what I've ladled from the top of relishes and salsas: The link at the bottom provides a fermented sauce 'method' that I like and will probably roughly follow this year. I really like the idea of using narrow necked bottles and capping the sauce off with a dab of olive oil, it should work very well. Simply put, make your relish or salsa or whatever you like or want to try, let it ferment completely, then run it through a sauce maker to remove skins and seeds, and then bottle it. Viola! Sauce! Live sauce, not dead. If you wanted a thicker sauce simply let it sit until the separation occurs and then draw off the liquid. Brace yourself, I just took this pic, you're looking at the ferments on the top shelf of my fridge; tomato pepper relish, kraut, corn relish, and whey. I always have whey on hand, it keeps for 6 mos, (actually longer). In the fridge door there are cukes, minced onion, garlic, and chili sauce: The tomato relish on the right (all store bought veggies) is made using Serrano peppers ( c. annum), the relish on the left (store bought Romas only) has Burpee hot lemon peppers (c. baccatum, from my garden) which, true as advertised by Burpee in their catalog, combines wonderfully with tomatoes for an outstanding flavor. I try to incorporate some sort of fermented food with every meal. This is often simply a shot of lacto fermented beverage such as beet kvass, kraut juice, or sauce ladled from a relish or a salsa, which greatly aids digestion of a heavy meal with meat and helps to lower blood glycemic response when eating carbs. This is some cabbage left over from a head I cut up to make some turkey noodle soup Saturday: I added about a half cup honey (which converts to lactic acid) in order to produce an ample amount of 'kraut kvass' as a beverage. The Hosta Handbook by Mark Zilis is a masterpiece...and it will always be popular and will never get outdated IMHO. Simply because it contains so much info...notes, observations, personal opinions of the "Master", etc. It's as if Mark Zilis has put on paper his technical notes and knowledge. It's not as fancy and as well presented as Diana Greenfell Color Encyclopedia but to a guy like me, I prefer the Handbook anytime. I have both books. Greenfell's book is on my coffee table in the living room for people to look at...and my visitors appreciate the 'nice' pictures in the encyclopedia. On the other hand, I have increased my knowledge of hostas 1000 folds more by referencing to The Hosta Hankbook by Mark Zilis. Papou Here is a link that might be useful: Papou's hosta website

Yes, I read the Field Guide too. I like it a lot. Much easier to deal with spiral bound books when you are reading casually. Not so easy to deal with Zilis' Encyclopedia. However, it was the first book I bought on hosta, in late 2011 I think, and sat up reading it for many hours--in bed, of course. With that book, the real meat of it is in the first 100 or more pages, all about hosta culture. Very informative. Then you get to the specific hosta descriptions....then a detailed index. We have some great tools available for free online as Bernd points out. All those small squares to features on Hosta Library are better than any one book title. Schmid is a very patient and particularly precise plantsman who knows more than I can ever comprehend. Makes me wish I'd taken botany instead of physics in school. Anyway, if you have a dictionary stand around, get rid of that mere word book and replace it on the stand with Zilis' Hosta Encyclopedia. Of course it is not current, but then, that indicates the vitality the subject..

My daughter has got me hooked on these books.She has given me the first three. I ordered the next two on line and bought them for $1.99 used. Check Alibris and Barnes and Noble for good used books.

I look forward to the new one in Sept.My daughter read that HBO is thinking of making a series.We think they will never find a man to play Jamie. We love him.

Sounds like they could be interesting. I usually like time travel books. But I don't care for the Romance novel type sci-fi books. There was one I started to read, and I don't remember what the title was nor the name of the author, but it had a woman that was visiting some ancient ruins, and got zapped back in time to the period of the ruins. The way it was written was so hokey and romance novel-ish, I just couldn't read past the first couple of chapters.

I'm reading them on my Kindle and thankful everyday I don't have to hold a 1400 page hardcover book up in the tub :)

The Physick book mentioned above is available from Amazon both in DTB form (dead tree book - love this term Kindle fanatics, not me LOL, have derived to help them rationalize their Kindle purchases) and for the Kindle and then, of course, there is your local library. If they don't have it in their catalog, they can probably get it for you through inter - library loan

I purchased a copy of An Echo In the Bone at my local Sam's Club for $18.77 plus tax. So if you want a reasonably priced copy go to Sam's Club.

Sally the plot of the Highlander sounds like what you are describing, at least at the beginning. It is definately a romance novel, but a LOT of plot to go along. My friend recommended it to me because I was looking for something to read for fun. I just can't get into romance novels of any type. I definately thought the Jamie character was romantic, and not in the typical romance novel way. The characters in this book are very well developed. Too much S&M and soft porn in the Highlander though, for my taste. But that's just my taste. I'm not a prude, I just can't read all that stuff with a straight face. I've never been able to sit through these historical fiction works though, so it is just a me thing, Ms. Gabaldon is a very well loved writer and many of my friends just love her books. I wish I did, since I am part Scots and have visited the highlands and love them.
