A new Book from Diana Gabaldon

I found out to night that the next book in the series of OUTLANDER is coming out on 9/22/2009. The title is AN ECHO IN THE BONE

I can't wait till I can read it. When I was coming back from Key West in June we stopped at a small shop to pick up a lamp for our neighbor , It was paid for but she didn't want it shipped since we were coming back we could pick it up. At the the shop where the lamp was, the owner had books for sale on a table out side. One of the books I looked at was The Drums of Autumn, a Diana Gabaldon Outlander series book. The owner said that she wished she could find the other books in the series.

I've read them all - most several times. My favs are still Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber. Even Voyager was worth reading a second time. However, I think they sort of go downhill from there, Drums of Autumn, Fiery Cross and Snow and Ashes were good, but not as good as the first ones. I will definitely read the new one, I still love the story and concept.

If you are looking for something in a similar vein, read The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane it is excellent!

Alexa, where did you find the The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane at? Most of the book stores here are either out of stock or late to stock any good reading for my taste. My interest varies widely since I read for pleasure. If anything can hold my interest for more than a few pages, I read it. Harlequin novels are just potato chips for my mind, I read them if there is not any thing else to read

The Hosta Handbook by Mark Zilis is a masterpiece...and it will always be popular and will never get outdated IMHO. Simply because it contains so much info...notes, observations, personal opinions of the "Master", etc. It's as if Mark Zilis has put on paper his technical notes and knowledge. It's not as fancy and as well presented as Diana Greenfell Color Encyclopedia but to a guy like me, I prefer the Handbook anytime. I have both books. Greenfell's book is on my coffee table in the living room for people to look at...and my visitors appreciate the 'nice' pictures in the encyclopedia. On the other hand, I have increased my knowledge of hostas 1000 folds more by referencing to The Hosta Hankbook by Mark Zilis. Papou Here is a link that might be useful: Papou's hosta website

Melissa, your example of Paul's Glory does show that the "new" is an improvement over the old. I think in some cases you are right. The picture of Van and Shirley Wades garden on page 49 (new) is an improvement over page 10 (Old,small book). For the most part though, the changes in my eye are not for the better. Look at Liberty - page 20 (old, small book) - compared to the picture of Liberty on page 26 in the new book. The one in the small book seems much more accurate to me. There are many examples of this. If everything was adjusted digitally as you suggested it might be, those that were too light to begin with would benefit while many others wouldn't. I particurarly noticed it with the yellows. Sunpower, Golden Spades and Fire Island hurt my eyes because they are so overly saturated. After the picture of Reptillian at the begining of the book, the pictures that follow of Magic Fire, Garden of the Wilsons, Cat's Eye, A beautiful blend of hostas, Hypoleuca are all either fuzzy, grainy, over contrasted or all three. Interestingly the picture of the garden at Highgrove House that appears in both books is the same. It is one of my favourites so I wish there would have been new views of this very creative and inspiring garden. To explain the reason for the fuzzy pictures I considered that it could have been the fault of the printer. Go to page 226, 227, 238, 239. The text is very smeared on these pages. I wondered if that could have happened with some of the pictures. I realize that I'm over the top with photos. I nearly had a stroke in the fall when we replaced the color cartridges in my printer with refilled ones. The difference though small or non-existent to my husband drove me crazy. I will not use anything but HP in the future. HH, I do not pay much attention to information in these books as far as growing conditions or size. I would be more likely to pay attention to the Hostapedia but in general what I am looking for in a hosta book is inspiration. I am not in a position to view hostas before I buy them. I want to be blown away by pictures. That happens on this forum as we all know. One plant from this new book that has caught my attention is Shade Parade. It is a good, clear picture. The color seems realistic. It is "on my list" I'll have to see if it's available anywhere for me to buy it. I'll be interested in hearing what others who have these books have to say.

Goldgirl, what a wonderful swap package! It's easy, at least for me, to get in a rut with dinner...your new cookbook will keep things interesting! I look forward to your post on what you try first. As for the candle holder...of course it's cooking related. That holder is stunning! With that as the centerpiece, the entire meal is "classed" up several notches. We're another beet loving family. Who knew so many people liked beets? I always thought we were just weird...well, maybe we are but not 'cause we like beets. And, raspberry jam...well, who doesn't love that. Great package, Diana! Thanks for the heads up but I've read this one. I love her books and can't wait for "In My Heart's Own Blood" to be released. I don't usually re-read a book but I could easily do that with this series. Diana Gabaldon is the the best author.

My daughter has got me hooked on these books.She has given me the first three. I ordered the next two on line and bought them for $1.99 used. Check Alibris and Barnes and Noble for good used books.

I look forward to the new one in Sept.My daughter read that HBO is thinking of making a series.We think they will never find a man to play Jamie. We love him.

Sounds like they could be interesting. I usually like time travel books. But I don't care for the Romance novel type sci-fi books. There was one I started to read, and I don't remember what the title was nor the name of the author, but it had a woman that was visiting some ancient ruins, and got zapped back in time to the period of the ruins. The way it was written was so hokey and romance novel-ish, I just couldn't read past the first couple of chapters.

I'm reading them on my Kindle and thankful everyday I don't have to hold a 1400 page hardcover book up in the tub :)

The Physick book mentioned above is available from Amazon both in DTB form (dead tree book - love this term Kindle fanatics, not me LOL, have derived to help them rationalize their Kindle purchases) and for the Kindle and then, of course, there is your local library. If they don't have it in their catalog, they can probably get it for you through inter - library loan

I purchased a copy of An Echo In the Bone at my local Sam's Club for $18.77 plus tax. So if you want a reasonably priced copy go to Sam's Club.

I've heard the name but never read any of her books but my granddaughter Danielle loves her.

Sally the plot of the Highlander sounds like what you are describing, at least at the beginning. It is definately a romance novel, but a LOT of plot to go along. My friend recommended it to me because I was looking for something to read for fun. I just can't get into romance novels of any type. I definately thought the Jamie character was romantic, and not in the typical romance novel way. The characters in this book are very well developed. Too much S&M and soft porn in the Highlander though, for my taste. But that's just my taste. I'm not a prude, I just can't read all that stuff with a straight face. I've never been able to sit through these historical fiction works though, so it is just a me thing, Ms. Gabaldon is a very well loved writer and many of my friends just love her books. I wish I did, since I am part Scots and have visited the highlands and love them.
