Any dates for new Zillis book?

Hello hosta friends; I was just wondering if any one has heard any new dates as too when the new book will be available ? Is it still going to be a big version or will Mr Zillis possibly do a follow -up pocket guide as D. Grenfell did? Personally I would prefer a handy size over a big coffee table one. Something smaller is easier to take along ,every where IMHO. ~Dot.

I have both pocket books and I prefer the Zilis one as you can open it and it bends back on itself and stays! The only reason I got Grenfells is for updates on newer hosta.

I wonder just how many of the handbooks Zilis had made? 500,1000,more? It might not be cost effective to do in handbook size again. Who knows him well enough to find out? He has his business just about 60 miles from me but it is not open to the public if I remember correctly.

Mark, Please up date your pocket guide and use the same style!!!!!

We hosta lovers should all bombard Zilis with e-mails stating our opinions.

Great, thanks for all the info. I've done lots and lots of BWB canning, but always the basic same things, or just one ingredient items so am not able to look at a recipe and know if it's a variation on something else or not. I'll go ahead and enjoy this book then and check out the thread on the other recommended books. I'd like to branch out and try some new things now. I've borrowed several books at the library and photocopied recipes I liked because since I can't have sugar and don't like pickled things, there are usually only one or two per book that I can use. I was very excited about the "Putting It Up With Honey" book because I could use every single recipe in it. I'm going to write to the company publishing it and ask about the testing. And maybe when I get ready to try a recipe from there, I'll post her first for your kind review.

I think any avid gardener needs the basic reference books, such as Dirr, but my favorite garden books to read are those in which the authors talks about their own gardens--how they made them, failures and successes, wonderful word pictures and so on. These I read over and over again. We are lucky in New England to have had a number of such books published thru the years. I have learned a tremendous amount from them, in the most pleasant possible manner. Some I love, in no order: The Country Garden--Josephine Nuese anything by Helen Van Pelt Wilson The Perennial Gardener--Frederick McGourty A Proper Garden--Elisabeth Sheldon (actually upstate NY) Making Things Grow Outdoors--Thalassa Cruso Old Time Gardens--Alice Morse Earle A Patchwork Garden--Sydney Eddison My Garden Comes of Age--Julia Cummins (upstate NY) There are lots more but these are among my favorites. Many are out of print but are easily gotten thru the library or online at bookfinders.com. Would love to hear more recommendations.

I'm not frieda, but IMHO I would have ended it when they finished the exhibit and went home. No scandal, no DaVinci code/Mission Impossilbe ending. The only thing I might have included - and was surprised that she didn't - was the visit Lola's real life person made with David, the son of the family who took her in. That takes place in the NYer excerpt and was very surprised she left it out. I can well imagine an editor insisting on some thrilling ending, which is too bad because in a book like this its the last thing you need. >This sort of novel will lead me on to other readings, hopefully, about the history of Bosnia, the former Yugoslavia, the Ottoman Empire, and the "Convivencia" time period of Spain's history Ones I've read: The Fracture Zone by Simon Winchester (non fiction), Birds without Wings (fiction). I also have read lots of history of the areas because I read travel narratives. I would recommend the classic Black Lamb Gray Falcon by Rebecca West - however its dated, and you'll get lots of gripes from all sides of the story of her different take on situations. But its worth reading just for the travel sections. I don't know any from the Convivencia period, tho I've read bits and pieces about it in other books. I'd love to know some of those as well - pass them on when you find them.

You know canfan, I noticed that too. I made a hybrid version of Annie's Salsa, using the Jalapeno Salsa recipe as inspiration, and went with 1 cup of vinegar. I roasted the jalapenos before chopping as well. I came up with: Roasted Jalapeno Salsa Makes 7-8 pints 5 cups tomatoes, peeled, chopped and drained *5 cups roasted jalapeno peppers, chopped (optional seeded or unseeded) 2 cups diced onion 6 cloves minced garlic 2 tsp cumin 2 tsp pepper 1/8 cup canning salt 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/3 cup sugar 1 cup cider vinegar 16 oz. tomato sauce 16 oz. tomato paste *To roast jalapenos, set oven broiler to high and place oven rack 6 inches away from broiler. Prepare peppers by slicing off tops and placing whole on a cookie sheet. Roast in broiler until skins turn brown/black, turning peppers halfway through. When finished, remove from oven and allow to cool. When cool, chop jalapenos (be sure to wear gloves!) and either remove the seeds or keep them for more spice! Mix all ingredients, bring to a boil and simmer 10-20 minutes. Ladel into prepared jars, leaving 1/2 inch headspace, and process in a BWB for 15 minutes.

i would love a new Zilis book too. Amazon has a new Grenfell
book coming out on 2/15/08. It is listed as a Wisley Handbook. When I searched Wisley Handbooks on Amazon, they seemed to be less than 100 pages though so this may be a disappointment. Come on Mark quit teasing us and feed our addiction

You will need a big hand to carry the new Zilis book around as it is going to be an encyclopedia.

Not quite true...Zilis first edition came out in 2000, and I got the Fourth Printing dated March 2003. This I believe was the last edition.

Makes you wonder why he stopped publishing it, doesn't it? If he had to keep printing each year, it obviously was popular. Ahhh...supply and demand...

allnitro is right - it's going to be a coffee table book. I heard it from the horse's mouth at the AHS convention here in Indy.

The Hosta Handbook by Mark Zilis is a masterpiece...and it will always be popular and will never get outdated IMHO. Simply because it contains so much info...notes, observations, personal opinions of the "Master", etc. It's as if Mark Zilis has put on paper his technical notes and knowledge. It's not as fancy and as well presented as Diana Greenfell Color Encyclopedia but to a guy like me, I prefer the Handbook anytime. I have both books. Greenfell's book is on my coffee table in the living room for people to look at...and my visitors appreciate the 'nice' pictures in the encyclopedia.
On the other hand, I have increased my knowledge of hostas 1000 folds more by referencing to The Hosta Hankbook by Mark Zilis.

The Color Encyclopedia of Hostas (Grenfell) cannot be beat when you want to curl up on a long winter night with absolutely gorgeous hosta pix and a notepad to jot down your favorites.

Since the Hosta Handbook is out of print and expensive to buy (if you're lucky enough to find a copy), the Grenfell book may have to suffice. I have Zilis' Hosta Handbook. It is more hands on, with needed info on vein count, size, flowers, etc.
Of course the newer varieties aren't in the Hosta Handbook but it is still well worth buying if you can find one. Mine is a second printing copy, wish I still had the first one.

And I agree, we need the new and improved version Zilis has to offer. Cannot wait to see what he comes up with!!

I'll call Zilis tomorrow to get the latest update :) By now, I'm sure he's used to hostaholics asking, Where in the world is that new book?

I just took a look at my Hosta Handbook and it's the
Fifth Printing: February 2004.
I was lucky enough to find it at my local hosta haunt two years ago. They had about a dozen copies on their shelf.
Now I wish I had bought a couple extra and held an auction, LOL.

I got the new Timber Press Pocket Guide for Christmas and have been enjoying reading that one too.
Of course now my want list is growing AGAIN!

Zilis' book is still being worked on at the publisher. After that it goes to the printer. No target release date yet. Don

Yes they are. They will copyright it themselves and have x number of copies printed.
