#@(*! Glass tile is making me crazy - mini subways, other ideas?
Comments (45)kgwlisa, that's exactly what I was worried about - all those cut edges. If Bill V were my tile guy, I wouldn't hesitate, but... Anyway, I think we could afford to use that tile as a field tile, but that's a LOT of green - not sure I want to use that much of such a vibrant color. As for the idea of going modern in the bath, I've thought about it, but the rest of the apartment is definitely pre-war looking and I have no plans to renovate it anytime soon, if ever. There's something I love about period-feeling baths anyway, so I think we're going to stick with that (even if BF doesn't like the English-telephone-looking tub filler/handheld, LOL!). BTW, does anyone know anything about Elements of Design fixtures? They have a ton of really beautiful period fixtures but I'm concerned about buying crap... Here's a snapshot of some tile that I taped to the bathroom wall to try to get an idea of what my original wood-look floor/white subways/glass accent might look like: I know it's a terrible picture, and unfortunately the colors aren't really true, but I really like the blue-green tiles on the right with the faux wood and white (they're much bluer in real life). They look great with chrome fixtures, too. I think I'm going to go ahead with this color combo - I just need to decide whether to use the glass tiles in mini-subway size or 1x1s. I'm also going to browse a bit more this weekend to see if I can find something similar in a ceramic tile. Wish me luck!...See MoreQuestion for Bill V.
Comments (13)I was there when he started putting down the CBU (I helped put in the Nuheat), asked why he didn't put thinset b/t the OSB and Hardi b/c that's what the Hardi instructions said to do. DB and I had just done the bathroom less than 2 months b4. Anyway, guy said he's been doing this for 35 yrs (yeah, the wrong way!) and put plenty of screws in, it'll be fine. Then when I noticed the problems 6 months later he said it was structural, then when he finally came out (3 months after that) to fix it he said someone walked on it too soon (I made sure all the subs knew the schedule, to my knowledge no one came in w/i 24 hours, after he grouted I came in but only walked where he laid the red rosin paper on and told me I could go). Anyway, the warranty period is long over - should I let him know we've got a new (continguous) area getting loose, try to get him to come back? Even if he won't come back, should I notify him? How long can I live with this? I really am trying to finish the rest of the house, don't want to get into ripping up 400sf of tile in the most-used rooms right now. If I notify him of the continued problems, do I have any recourse to take him to small claims say next year? Or is there a chance that if I replace another 10-15sf tile now, I can get away with it for another couple of years til I finish the master bath (and have someone who knows what they're doing lay new tile), or even another 8-10 years, when we might be doing kitchen reno (new countertops - another installer screw-up, another thread)? I hate to damage the 30sf of Nuheat that I paid the electrician $800 to install to rip up loose tile when the tile over the Nuheat is fine. Comments (95)3 years into the new kitchen and I can say I am very very happy overall. A couple high level thoughts for those making decisions.. Love love love: Induction cooktop. Risky when we did it, cause it was newer tech. Love the control, the easy clean and the look. Warming drawer - get used many nights a week with kids/family schedules Soapstone counters - whoa.. The are are gorgeous and indestructible Drawers for all lower cabs- sooooo much easier to use! Miele MW/convection oven - so great to have a second oven and a mW in one box. Things I'm less in love with... Oven is very large, takes a looong time to preheat. Dislike digital Really wish we could've afforded the built in fridge.. Backsplash is ok. I don't hate it but I don't love it. Simple to change, will probably do sometime. It took us a long time to get the kitchen done and it was a major remodel (tore down walls and stuff. But I am so glad we did! Good luck to everyone on the journey!...See MoreGreen Granite Counter w Green Backsplash?
Comments (66)earn44 - I am very impressed w Fireclay. Not only is the tile beautiful, but their customer service has been great so far, cheap samples, fast shipping, and personal emails to ask about my project. I am adjusting my pricing expectations and thinking that $35/sq ft isn't so bad! Thanks everyone for talking me out of the shapes, that saves $10/sq ft! Speaking of Fireclay, I'm back on board w Kelp potentially, I've been reading through many of the Craftsman kitchen threads on here and lunarlab's kitchen thread. The Kelp pic she posted on this thread is one of the many in her reveal thread, and shows the color quite differently. Hope you don't mind me posting this lunarlab, it is gorgeous! pippiep - I read through your threads on tile, I feel like you've saved me so much work and samples! I like the Leaf Peeper tile, but the Basil is just so much more vibrant and appealing to me. Checked out the Vermeere at Complete Tile, but paying for shipping is stopping me from ordering samples. Does anyone else balk at these silly expenses, that are so small in the scheme of things! More thoughts later ... thanks everyone for your ideas and feedback!...See MoreRelated Professionals
