revisiting youtube

I was on this site a few days ago asking for some help in getting youtube videos to play, as all I was getting was a black box with no progress war, loading icon, etc. This was after I had done the usual disk and cache cleanup and updated Adobe Flash. Then, they suddenly started playing. This evening, they suddenly stopped playing. I did a websearch for possible fixes and got a tip from a yahoo help site, to put an "s" in front of the http, to make it https. I did, and they began to load right away. So, is it something with my security? Or could it be something with youtube? Also, I have an Adobe Flash plug in. Do I need that to play flash content? I've never updated it; should I do that, and where would I get it? I've not seen anything regarding a plugin on the Adobe site.
