Moving files to another computer

Just got another desktop for an office out of the house. Bought another XP machine due to work software. I need to copy many files, data and (hopefully) settings to the new machine. I need to move data back and forth between machines. I know a server would be the way to go, but that's not possible.

I'd like the new machine to be a carbon copy of the older XP machine so everything would stay the same and I could just start working.

Is that possible?

I'll take a stab at it. If it was me, I would take desk top tower and laptop to a shop and let them do it after calling to see if they could. I don't know of any reason why a knowledgable professional couldn't get you a carbon copy of your PC onto your laptop. Somebody else Chime in here, I'm over my head already. Grady

Sounds like plain old networking with file sharing should do most of what you've said, after loading the same programs on the new machine.

If you are trying to open the .wps files with Microsoft Word, then you probably need to install a file format converter in Word. I would've looked for you but alas, you didn't say which version of Works or Word you are working with. Another possibility would be to go back to the old computer, open a document with Works, and then use FILE : SAVE AS and save the document in RICH TEXT FORMAT (a .rtf file). Word ought to be able to open that, and then you can SAVE AS to a Word document.

You can "export" your email addresses to a USB drive and "import" them on your new computer File->Export->Address Book->Text File-> using "Browse" find the location of your USB drive. Name your file and follow the steps in the wizard to finish. On your new computer go to File->Import and follow the steps to import the data from your USB drive You can do the same for exporting/importing your Internet Favorites. It is located under File->Export. Just follow the wizard. I have never had any luck moving the actual email files. I am sure there is a way - but every attempt I have made has failed. I know there was a software you could purchase to "back up" OE, and then restore it on a new machine. I didn't want to buy anything though. You could try forwarding the emails (from your old machine) that you want to keep to yourself - then retrieving them on the new machine.

If you've purchased any music or movies that are protected, make sure you deauthorize your computer (under Store in the menu). I think Itunes now sells music unprotected (not sure about movies). In the past, the files were protected and you could copy them to a certain number of ipods and a certain number of computers. If you change computers too many times without deauthorizing, you won't be able to play them on the new computer.

I have Comcast high speed. Their website says it is 6 Mbps (which means nothing to me). The old computer has XP. I assume new computers have network cards? How can I check to see if the old one has one? I have NO geeky know-how. None. I've always worked for a company with a help desk that greatly discourages us doing anything on our computers (well, other than work). I am also old enough that PCs were somewhat rare until I was out of school. I know how to use programs, but I don't very little about the actual operating systems.

File and setting Transfer Wizard.
I'm never used it, I just know were the directions are.
Sample below.
Connecting Your Computers
For the best experience using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, you will want to connect your two computers together. You can connect your computers either by using a null modem serial cable or by using Home networking.

Connecting With A Serial Cable
The easiest way to connect your computers is to use the null modem serial cable. To use the null modem serial cable:

Both computers must have an available serial port (also called a COM port).
You must have a null modem serial cable (also called a LapLink serial cable or a serial file transfer cable).
The serial cable must be long enough to connect the computers together.

Thank you all, so it is possible? I might have to go Grady's route as cboy's response sounds complicated. What is a COM port and what's a 'null modem serial cable?'

Avoid the weeping,wailing, and gnashing of teeth by doing as old Grady advised. At least you will have someone else to curse besides yourself if it doesn't come out as you desire. Ha! Grady

This isn't a very big deal for a pro. Suspect it will be quick and cheap. I guarantee you it WILL be a big deal if try it on your own unless you're incredibly lucky or much more knowledgeable than you've represented. Suggest deciding at the head end if you're game for the aggravation or not. You will learn stuff, but I didn't get the impression that was any part of your intention.

You are certainly right, Asolo. I'm not in the mood for a hassle. Will follow the wise advice to hire someone. To complicate it further, Dell delivered the tower minus the monitor. So now this will have to be done with my old monitor.
