DW question... pic of high loop installation needed

I'm trying to explain to DH what a high loop DW installation looks like and he's trying to determine if it'll be possible to achieve for a reasonable price/amount of work in our remodel. We are about to complete the electrical work and begin some plumbing. Everything in this home is concrete. Even the wall the removal is proving difficult. This small home is built like a battleship (good thing) but is making remodeling a bear. So a few things:

Do all Bosch DW's require a high loop installation?

Do Kitchenaid DW's also require one? (my 2nd choice in a DW)

Does anyone have a picture of what it looks like?

A high loop is really easy - you take the drain hose that comes out of the DW and loop it before you attach it to the drain (make sure the loop is above the drain). You might need a little duct tape to hold in place but it's no big deal and doesn't involve any expense. Alternatively you can install an air gap but that does involve expense to drill and extra hold in your countertop and the purchase and installation of the air gap. Miele's have some kind of valve that precludes the need for an air gap or high loop but I don't know if any other brands do. I'm sure someone else on the forum can post a picture of a high loop for you.

Better than a pic - I am linking a couple of how-to videos. You can do a search on Youtube for "high loop" + dishwasher, and find a bunch of videos.

As to a "reasonable price" - the high-loop costs very little, just a couple of things from Home Depot, and also your new DW will come with most of the other stuff needed.

I have a Miele like sshrivastava and it is not next to the sink. It drains directly down through the floor and not into the sink plumbing. It doesn't need an external air gap(the kind you install and have the top of it exit on the counter. The air gap sshrivastava is talking about is called a vent in the user manual and it is inside the DW. It is simply a plastic cap near the lower spray arm that you snip off with scissors. I used mine for several weeks without it cut off and didn't have a problem, then decided to cut it off anyway - made no difference. Miele's can hold the water in and won't let water run back through the drain line.

I had the GE repairman out yesterday to fix our wall oven. While he was here I asked him about GE dishwasher problems I had read about. He said that GE makes a lot of good appliances but the dishwasher is not one of them. He gets regular complaints about their dishwasher not cleaning and there is nothing he can do. They are functioning as designed and it is a design problem. I don't believe you need an air gap to work well, but you do need a loop high enough to make a downhill siphon to the drain pipe.

Yes, I believe all integrated Mieles have an in-process light. A custom panel should allow for this. Our Miele Excella has its light at the top right side, and our door panel obscures it, but we can still see a red glow in the crack between the door & countertop. Some family members don't remember to check for the light, so we usually place a clip or towel on the DW handle to signal usage. (We have two DWs & we usually alternate them.)

A high loop by definition is created at the time of the installation by securing the drainline to the underside of the counter just before it enters the drain location. That prevents dirty water from the drain system from entering the line. While some DWs have integral backflow valves, that would not prevent the drain line itself from becoming contaminated, just the DW.

In our last house up in corner inside the sink cab we put a nail on a slant upward. We hooked the drain house on this nail. That is it. So it comes out of DW and loops up then down to the drain pipe.

My Bosch came with a hose holder on the back of the DW... for shipping, I assume. I took it off, and screwed it to the inside of my cabinet high enough to create the high loop specified in the installation manual. Works just fine!

Ah-ha!.... easy peasy... I was wondering if it was going to involve the reinstallation of the drain at a higher level. Now I can get whatever kind of DW and not worry. Thanks all!
