Would like help, to links of sites, that have reviews of "The best of" Firewall/Antivirus software.

Anti virus reviews

Make sure it is a true review. PC Mag for example uses the number of installs and gives Norton high marks. Truth is Norton is installed on computers as a 3 months free trial by manufacturers and often removed by the purchaser.

Thanks fo Google links.....I had already done those.

I should have been more detailed.....Am looking for sites that members have used & trusted......purchased products & are sastified with the product(s) purchased baised on the review site(s) they used.

who the heck are all these new people and some of the things suggested here are not the ones you want please be careful we have had some trolls here lately trying to sell their junk. You can not run 2 antivirus programs at the same time if they are both running full time it will cause a conflict that is very well known and documented and will be told to you at any of the support forums you go to so you need to fully remove Norton since you now have AVG. go here and use app remove and the norton removal tool from the security garden link Antivirus Product Removal Tools Using AppRemover it is free spybot search and destroy was at one time very good but today there are some that are much preferred so I suggest replacing spybot and adaware with these free products, update them each time you use them and scan weekly with full scan. bunky, I personally will never recommend Norton to anyone. It slowed my computer down so bad that right now I'm trying to uninstall it. When I go to Add/Remove it tells me there was an error when I installed it! After all this time!! When you follow the directions they give you you just go in a complete circle. You end up back at Add/Remove and then you can start all over again. Never again wil I buy a Norton. Better listen to your son in law. LOL BT

Dennis, thanks for a well laid out list of problems. It does help those who feel they can see some or all of your problems. AVG is by far the most popular free anti virus and I doubt that is your issue. I would not remove that one. Spyware Doctor I know nothing about. If you have the original CD or the download stored on your computer you could remove it entirely using the Add/Remove and see if that helps at all. Superantispyware and or Malwarebytes could be alternatives to trying Spybot Search & Destroy. If you use Spybot S&D be sure it is in fact that program and not a sound alike rogue program. Have you ran any cleaners at all? Not registry cleaners but the Disk cleanup in the Accessories/System Tools folder of XP. Try that and a defrag, it will help modestly. Do you have Google or Yahoo toolbars and are they allowed to run in the background? The Google Toolbar has either 3 or 4 entries in your Startup and using your resources. Click Start click Run type msconfig click OK click the Startup tab Now check each of these items and decide if they do in fact need to run. Google each entry before deciding to stop one because if you stop the wrong ones the computer may not start again. If you stop any you need to reboot. During the reboot you will get a dire warning, do not be alarmed, place a check mark not to see it again and continue the booting.

OK, I used Zonealarm for years until it seemed to clash with Windows XP SP2. This seemed to be an irritant for a minority so I still promote the Zonealarm firewall. Then I moved to Comodo and I am happy with that too.

Anti virus, I have used AVG, AntiVir, aVast and Comodo all with no issues. Except AVG decided it was not going to allow my OE to send or receive emails a few months ago, again this happens to a minority of users.

Why have I used all of those? Simple, I help computer users in the flesh and online occasionally so I felt I needed to know how each worked from my own stand point. Running 3 confusers 24/7 allowed me to use a variety of programs at the same time. All those are free, I have never paid for protection yet.

I believe you will find all companies involved in virus protection talk to each other to form a common front against a never tiring enemy. Some reports have the enemy winning the battle sadly.

Thanks.

I also used ZoneAlarm, for quite some time.

I've used Trend, McAfee, Norton.....etc.

I'm now using Panda, because last year, it was rated #1 (by most reviews).

Again, thanks for your input.
