Wired Router

I can't seem to find out if there is such a thing as a router that I can just plug my existing cables into. Is there?

I think we need a little more info as to what you want to do and what equipment you have, (cable modem or dial up internet and what existing cables).

http://compnetworking.about.com/od/homenetworking/a/connecttwocomp.htm ---This is the first one I looked at as a result of searching for "computer router." It discusses both wired and wireless. For wired, it covers using ethernet, serial and parallel connections, and USB.

replacement power supply

Forget the power supply, you're talking a modem. Most, ISP's will gladly give you a new modem. If you've had service with AT&T for any length of time, just tell them your modem is bad, end of story. Don't need to troubleshoot it, that's their problem. Generally speaking when talking about power supplies, it's the power supply on the computer that's being discussed, not the peripherals. Modems and routers are notorious for getting hot, make sure you always have yours positioned for max air flow. Laura

Zone Alarm - conflicting messages

I don't know zone alarms well, nor firefox too well, its not my normal everyday browser. But I do know that firefox will disable any 'Plug-ins, Add-ons, Extensions, etc that are incompatible with it. This does not mean ZoneAlarms is not acting as firewall. It only means that whatever plug in for some kind of added protection beyond the normal firewall rules isn't working. Might possibly be you could uninstall zone alarms completely somehow, and reinstall it completely fresh... hopefully zone alarms is smart enough it would recognize the particular plug in isn't compatible with current firefox versions and not install that plugin, but perhaps maybe a different one. I'm just guessing.. I really don't have much respect for zone alarms from years ago experiences and don't know if they have code writers that would check compatibilities now or not - but for something as popular as firefox they certainly should. lighting in timberframe houses
Q
Comments (0)
Our current post and beam house has almost no overhead lighting. As per the norm in log and timberframe houses in the 90s (I guess) it is all switchable outlets for lamps or wall sconces and the results suck. In our new house we're having overhead lights but I'm not sure of the best way to do it. The ceiling consists of heavy beams and planking that creates the structural floor of the upper level of the house. There is no space in between floors to hide electrical boxes or wires. We routered the beams and installed wire prior to laying the floor in the locations we want the lights but now the boxes have to go in. We can't set the boxes into a beam due to code restrictions and/or our engineering approval so that's out of the question. Basically we have hidden wires leading to visible electrical boxes in the centre of the ceilings. I don't have any photos but here's one of the wires coming out of the beams. We need fixtures that cover the box I guess. One solution we've talked about is making a hole in a board to set the box in and having the board blend in to the ceiling. I've searched online for solutions but it seems as though most post and beam houses either have false ceilings or go with the wall sconces and lamps like our old house. Any suggestions?

I believe I would get a piece of the beam timber long enough to go from one beam to the next, cut a hole in the center for the box, rout a trough on the backside for the wiring and mount the beam-piece flush against the floorboards. This would highlight the fixture mount area which I find preferable to trying to obscure it. Smoothing the face of the beam-piece and cutting an accent detail along the edges might also look good.

Well I anticipate getting an iMac. I figure there will be a transition period. I figure I want both comps on line during that period for obvious reasons till its time to deactivate the Ex Pee. A month? 2 since I'm busy with other things?

When I try to find a wired router on-line it doesn't come up in my interpretation of what I see that the routers are anything but wireless. Perhap I've used the rong search term. ie wired router. I'll try non-wireless, see what happens.

Well I just tried again on Amazon and found one:

Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch (BEFSR41)

I have ATT/Yahoo DSL. I have a Seimens SpeedStream 4100 DSL MOdem. I have Cat 5 cables from a previous router, since defunct, which I used while transiting from W98 to WXP. At that time I had Charter Cable. The concept worked just fine at that time.

That's what I am trying to do and without taking time to learn a lot about all kinds of related stuff like wireless and routers and switches and networking (which I do not want) because I have lots of other problems that aren't really a whole lot of fun and if I could just hook the damn thing up by pushing the wires together my stress level might come down to ceiling level.

I cald ATT and they said just connect em all up and go to work- I will.

A quick web search shows that your SpeedStream 4100 is a combination Modem/Router.

You probably just want a small 4port "Network Switch"

Link below is to one from Netgear... but there are many brands and most all should work for you just fine.
