found out why I couldn't download... and a question

I found out why I could not download to save my 'favorites'. My CD/DVD writer program was overriding Winxp. When I talked to a tech at my server, he too was telling me to do what you/myself had done without results. When he realized the program was overriding, and I used that program it was 'doable' for me!!

I was talking to someone today- he mentioned about all the viruses getting through even with firewalls/AVG/Malware, etc. He mentioned that everytime he uses his computer, he downloads, then 'clears' his computer.

Can you tell me in a simpler way what he was doing?

Is that a good way to avoid trouble with your computer.

Now that I cleared my computer completely and reinstalled the disc, my computer is FAST!! I don't want to have any trouble that I may have caused myself by downloading any sites or whatever I may have done to screw up the computer.

All you need to do is

Run 1 Anti Virus program--Keep it updated.
Run 1 firewall.

Windows Defender is nice for spyware.

Spyware blaster is a great addition to the computer it actually prevents malware all you need to do on this program is update once a week.

Another must have is a program called Web of trust (WOT)

Spybots immunization feature is also a way to prevent malware.

Most important install all windows critical updates always from windows up date. And that goes for all programs keep them updated.

There are aslo to cleaning programs you can run once a week 1 is called Ccleaner, and the other is Atf.

And watch what you download your biggest protection is between your shoulders.

And it's true no matter how much security you have you are still are at risk to infections, following the above guide lines will certainly reduce the risk...

The only way to be sure the computer stays clean is to leave it shut down and that makes no sense. Use and enjoy your computer. You now know how to restore to factory defaults and while you may not want to do that every five minutes you do have that option.

Zep makes good points above. I use Windows Defender on my Windows 7 computer and have seen it in action on a few Vista machines also.

The person 'clearing' his computer simply removes any programs he has downloaded. However those same programs or files would have been scanned by his anti virus program during the download. He probably does not run something like Crap Cleaner or ATF every time, that seems overkill for sure.

Hi Linda, You keep me in chuckles!!! Wow, one of your orchids blooms continually!! Impressive. I have a "phal" that must be plastic ... it is very pretty and has 15 blooms on it that have been there for more than a month. The two stalks line up back to back like mirror images. Thanks Mike..actually, I dont think I saw the post. How have you been? How are plants? Bringing any indoors yet or is it too soon? The night before spraying, all but Fish Emulsion is placed in the mister..It's said never keep fertilizers after 'X' hours, so add FE right before spraying. Shake thoroughly..All ingredients need to blend in, so when you spray, each part of the plant gets equal amounts. BTW, I add FE for two reasons..One is it rids and prevents scale. The other ingredients kill/prevent mites. Unfortunately, this concoction doesn't bother mealy, a major, very contageous enemy of plants. The second reason is it makes a fantastic, organic, last foliar feed of the year, (here in IL.) I'm glad it rid/prevented scale on your trees last year. I'll never forget the Olive tree shipped to my house, bearing hundreds, literally hundreds of scale. Sticky Traps are also fantastic, non-toxic traps that kill whitefly. After reading this thread, I Googled Yellow Sticky Traps. Park's Seeds sells traps..here's what they say traps capture: aphids, fungus gnats, whitefly, leafminer, carrot rust flies, gypsy moths, thrips, and many more... They sell 'Large' traps..9 traps w/holders for 4.95. GardensAlive.com doesn't list the same shape traps I bought from them. They sell an ornamental shaped butterfly trap,(for indoor plants.) LOL Planet Natural, (I've never ordered from this company) sells traps and has articles regarding LM'ers and other pests.. Depending on the amount of traps one needs, Planet Natural sells 25 3x5" for 8.95. They also sell 3 traps. There's numerous nurseries, but check Ebay. Even though the prices listed aren't bad. In Il, local hardware stores sell large traps..they're probably used to catch roaches, waterbugs, mice, etc. Yuck! For those who want to trap Fungus Gnats, one nursery recommends laying the trap horizontally. That makes sense. Brass, you're right..using traps and spray will definatly stop or at the minimum, reduce insects. Hopefully, kill all. Toni PS...Thanks again Mike..

Why not just lay a thick layer of compost down, scratch it in a little, and start planting? That's what I did in several areas I didn't want to turn with a shovel, and it worked great, especially if I had killed the grass first with mulch or newspaper. If you live in Dekalb County, they give compost away free at the Buford Hwy waste compaction site. Many plants like the ones you describe are thriving in my bed made by killing the grass with newspaper, then laying down about six inches of Dekalb Cty compost. The worms love it, too!

Well, so far so goo...I hope I am not jinxing myself. I have left the rose in the south facing window and found a lightstrip from one of my 10 gallon aquariums that I am not using. I had the spiral mini flourescent bulbs already in it, so I stood it on it's end next to the rose. I leave that on from 6:45am when I get up until usually 8 or 9PM when I think to turn it off and close the blinds. I have kept up with the rinsing once a week for mites (I don't want to use pesticides since my cat may just decide to nibble it)and have left it on the pebble tray with water. I have also been misting it twice a day to keep some extra humidity. It seems happy enough and has not only kept blooming but has put out new growth and new buds. This little things just makes me so happy! Do you think it would be okay to give it some plant food (Miracle-Gro for houseplants?)until I get some new rose food? Thanks! -Amy

zep and owbist- I have Win Defender, AVG 8.5, CCleaner. I need to reload Spyware Blaster- when I Googled it, there were several 'sites'. Which one is a safe place to download- you guys have alerted us to ones that look real, but are not.

Will any of these cause trouble with the other? When I had Norton and AVG at the same time it caused problems.

Never run Norton period get rid of it!!! it is nothing short of problems, it's like a virus unto itself, takes over your PC, and difficult to get rid of for a novice!

Norton is OK I guess, but through recent years it has become a resource hog and deeply configures itself into the O/S.

As the sophistication of AV kernels and engines has advanced it is not unusual for an AV to now require a removal tool that will "safely and completely" (their words not mine) remove an unwanted application.

If you paid for Norton, remove AVG and use Norton until the subscription expires. If it is a trial version, you can go either way, remove Norton now or when the trial version expires. Regardless it's your choice. One has to go. Just keep the definitions current.
