papercrane, thank you for responding, i also do most of my shopping online, however am very unsure of purchasing a sight unseen, minimal information regarding the vendor, large, heavy, expensive piece of furniture from an online source with a less than appealing return policy. for instance, they do not want you to refuse the shipment for ANY reason & if you return the item you must pay for the return AND outgoing shipping(which was actually free shipping)PLUS a 15% restocking fee, AND the product Must be returned in the original package. Is it just me, or does this sound absurd? sheilaaus, thank you also for responding- I have a homedecorators story... I get their catolog and have always thought the products and pricing were good, I went online and realized they actually have several storefront locations and over the past 2 years have been affiliated with the home depot, i was so excited and thought it would be worth it and even took a trip to one of their locations. When we arrived in the parking lot (on a Saturday afternoon 2 weeks ago) the lot was empty, we were very surprised, however after walking around the entire store we understood why- the quality was below average and the finishes were just awful, I really wanted to love this stuff, didn't leave until looking at everthing, very dissappointing, however very glad did not purchase anything sight unseen. Still hoping someone will respond with a great online source for bathroom vanities. the online sources that have the vanities i want are premierevanities and maxvanities. thank you in advance for your responses.

Roarah....I seriously considered medicine cabinets. We are using the Robern in the master and I'm excited as I have never had a medicine cabinet before. I hope I don't regret this decision. Hadn't even thought about the mess inside. Mostly dh's tbh. my boys are barely shaving and one is a terrible slob and I'm afraid it would be bad so ruled out the medicine cabinets for them. I think you are right. I like the oval better but the rectangle may be more appropriate than the oval. Thanks for the feedback.

Seems to me that with new counter & vessel sink the only thing significantly raised is the bottom of the sink. You’ll also have to do some plumbing modifications to add under sink piping & of course now there’s a problem with either where backsplash was with the old counter or with the mirror which starts at backsplash height. Of course you’ll also need new faucets. It’ll be like pulling a thread. Do you like vessel sinks? They‘re decorative & generally a lot more costly than a bathroom sink which you can get for less than $100. If you already know it’s hard to find a 40” counter (I don’t know that), then how about get a new counter, you can get a quartz or granite remnant from a stone fabricator, get an undermount sink to maximize counter space, and have the vanity built up from the bottom. I know that can be done - a frame built to raise the vanity. Check out having vanity professionally refinished to clean up the oak - or professionally painted if you want to change color. Can’t say how much this will cost but how long will you be in this house & how much inconvenience is the too low vanity for the people using it every day? That will tell you if it’s worth it. It’s also a value add improvement to house.

FWIW we ordered ours sight unseen from Home Depot after totally failing to find anything locally; never imagined doing that and was super nervous but it worked out. (We did look at remnants at local stone yards but the price was beyond what we had budgeted since we're in a very expensive labor area. We have a place nearby that does tons of prefab stone counters but almost none were in this size with a centered sink. With a 36" or 48" vanity, we would have had a lot of choices.) I'm surprisingly pleased with it for the price! We paid around $400 all in, which included the sink. The top is quartz; we also got quotes for soapstone and marble, which I would have preferred but which were more than four times as expensive in our area. It isn't fancy but it's totally serviceable for the price (as is the vanity, which isn't high end but seems well-made--not perfect, but much better than we expected for the price). While we ordered the top from HD, it direct-shipped from the fabricator, and we later learned that they sell directly to consumers too. Arrived well packed with no damage. We were adding a brand-new bathroom in a HCOL area on a very modest budget (nowhere close to six figures), so most of our budget went to the actual structural work. I didn't want to spend more than $1500 on the vanity plus top; this ended up at $1200 total.
