Does this only happen when you first open the browser or open a new page...not subsequently when you click on a bookmark? If so, have you gone into the Options settings to check the homepage? It could be that somehow what you have coming up is set as your default home page.

tig, the same thing I think was happening to me there for a while. I was having a whole lot of problems at the time though...no updated antivirus working 'all' of the time, no firewall, just lacking a lot of good protection and no way to stay on dial-up line long enough to get anything downloaded and working. I eventually got high speed, and protection and things ended up working themselves out. I like you had many pages open at once, and it would shut down...usually giving me a seconds counter counting down b4 it happened. I would just log off, well actually I usually had to press and hold the button on the tower to get away from things. Once I would turn it back on, and log on, it would ask me if I wanted to restore session, to which I replied 'yes' and all the tabs I had open previously would reopen...in time. ok, i know no one sympathizes with me on dialup but that's my life! Oh, but I can empathize...been there...done that...wanted to pull hair out and scream! There was just no other option available for an ISP at the time...so I do understand. I open a mozilla browser for 1 website and while reading there on that page I open 3 or 4 other websites. So as they load I read at the 1st then I read one of those others as I go to another site at the one I just read. follow that? Just how do you open another website? page? thread? Go to a favorite and right click on it and choose "Open in new window or open in new tab? Go to a forum, and see a message you are interested in reading and then right click on it and choose "Open in new window or open in new tab? Go to file (upper left corner) and left it to click on open new 'window' or open new tab? And then click on a favorite to open in that tab? When you have lots of pages open, does the brief header appear above or below the page you are looking at? If they are 'above' they are tabs. If they are below, they are windows. You can open several tabs in each window. Have I made any sense whatsoever? Sue...who sometimes has 5, 10, or20 'tabs' open or opening at once.

It sounds like your "Add-Ons" dialog box launched on the 'Get Add-Ons' tab. Did you check Extensions or Plug-Ins? That should also be listed on the Sidebar.

No it just looks like you are, default profile and secondary profile so I was confused a bit and thought you were running 2 profiles. When you have issues like that always go directly to the Mozilla folder in the program files folder on the C drive and try to open the Firefox.exe file from within the folder just double click it, that's where Firefox lives. First make sure there are no instances of Firefox already running in the Task Manger. If there are right click on the Firefox.exe in there and choose End process To get to Firefox Mozilla Folder: Open My computer, click local disk (c) look for program files folder double click it in that folder look for Mozilla folder double click it in there you will see Firefox.exe double click it. See what happens there. I also would consider a clean install as outlined in the link that means personal settings, bookmarks, add/ ons would be deleted. Sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make cake. You can back up bookmarks if there important to you. You can always get the add / ons back. See if Firefox opens directly from the Mozilla folder in program files folder first I'm curious about that. Make sure Internet Explore is working so you can reinstall Firefox and I recommend version 7. If you decide to reinstall a clean slate and that's what I would do at this point.
