Kitchenaid Freezer Drawer - Have you had this problem?

We just installed our new kitchen aid fridge with a bottom freezer drawer (model KBRS20EVMS4) and after day one, the drawer comes out a bit more on the left side when you pull anywhere on the handle slightly to the left of center. It is almost like it jumps some gears on the track. It makes a loud noise (ice being rattled?) and the door is on an angle when you look at it from the top, but it closes fine. The fridge is in the corner with a left handle, so when you are coming from the kitchen (or if you are 4 years old) you are likely to pull if off center.

I purchased it through Sears and had the repair guy out and he said it has seen this before and their is nothing he can do - ack - because it "still works fine." I am concerned that over time there will be wear to the gears (plastic) or they may even break and I will be stuck with a non-functioning freezer drawer. He said he had never seen that... hum.

I wanted to know if anyone with KA bottom freezers have had this problem, know about this problem, know if their is a remedy, or is in the know about this "feature." I plan on calling KA tomorrow, but I figured I would go to the real source (GWers :)

I had problems with mine last fall, brand new. They kept adjusting the drain line. Finally, they sent another tech. It turned out the "eye" was partially covered by the black seal that goes around the drawer. We have the wood panels that match our cabinets, and I guess we waited to put the seal on after the cabinet man came. He just pulled them off and restuck them. It has worked perfectly ever since. So, it is worth a try see if the sensor is obscured.

I think mine's a 48" SxS KA built-in. It works fine with our only issue being the icemaker as well. Ice tends to freeze up along one side until the icemaker thinks it's full. It's not a big deal for me to reach in and break up the ice periodically - takes less than 30s every couple weeks. We did have a problem with the icemaker that was fixed under warranty. I was chatting with the technician when he was working on it, and he said all the manufacturers buy their icemaker from the same source (GE I think). Based on that, I have no great expectation that one brand's icemaker would be much better than another, but take that as hearsay. Other than that it works fine. As the guy at the appliance store said when I was contemplating subzero vs KA: "they all keep the beer cold".

Listen to your cabinetmaker. Sorry! When we did our kitchen three years ago our cabinetmaker explained to me the abuse the appliance pulls would take, how necessary it is the pulls and their screws be up to the task. I didn't want to hear that. We also used RH bin pulls for our fridge drawers (24" wide, two bin pulls per drawer) and a pull for the dishwasher. Our cabinetmaker, who installed our hardware, used different, stronger screws than those which came with the pulls from RH. I know he was not impressed with the screws which came with them. For our full fridge / full freezer we used real appliance pulls (not from RH -- I cannot now recall the name) and on the fridge the pull has actually given a bit. So we had to remove the panel and tighten the screws on it. Our fridge, like everyone's, is opened a billion times a day, takes a lot of abuse. Anyway, my point is that you will regret not having strong enough pulls / screws on your heavier drawers, esp. your freezer drawers. Talk to your cabinetmaker about using different, stronger screws with your pulls. I wonder if there's a way to put some kind of washer or something on the back to give it a bit more oomph. Hmm.

Sorry to hear of your problem, I don't have that frig however if Sears can not figure out how to fix it (not surprised) then insist that they replace it immediately with one that does work properly. I imagine that you didn't agree to purchase a defective refrigerator. Good luck and keep us posted.
