Shopping for a Laptop

I am in the market for a laptop and I would like some clues for what I need to look for. I am not necessarily wanting a brand name. I am wanting what to know things to intelligently compare brands. Years ago, when laptops were first coming out, our school district bought all the administrators a laptop. I could have almost put the darn thing in my hip pocket. The screen was tiny.....and the keyboard was almost impossible to type on. I did not like it. The first thing I did was to hook up a full-sized keyboard and a larger screen.

I will be using the laptop for internet and pictures. Weight is not really an issue....as long as I can carry it from one room to another. I will not be lugging it around at work.

Here are some of the differnces I have been running into and not understanding. First, Intel or AMD? Is Dual-Core pretty much standard? I would like a large screen. Is 17 inches too big? How can I be assured that a laptop has a full-sized keyboard?

I know there are other questions I should be asking, but I am not sure if I even know what I should be asking. What info would you be looking for when shopping for a laptop.

Not all are dual core.. dual core is nice. If given a choice avoid the Celeron processor,, but they are ok.

Buss speed can make things peppier,, 1066 v/s 667, if given the choice go faster.

I've a 6 pound toshiba 15.4 screen right now and find it rather large compaired to the 14.1 it replaced. Both have the same size keyboard. Actually both are the same weight but due to leverage the 15.4 feels heavier & obviously has more plastic and flexes slightly to save weight.

The 14.1" laptop keyboard fills the width, no edge room to spare.. I assume thats probably the smallest screen with normal sized keyboards.

Slower processers are cooler. Some people have laptops that are too hot for laps during the summer. And too hot sitting on their desks too and stick fan cooler pads under them.

Lighter the better in my opinion. Moving it from room to room that weight isnt as important as the picking it up and setting down while on the sofa or recliner. While I enjoy the 15.4 screen,, the 14.1 was fine and much easier to handle.

Faster hard drives are nice. But not a must.
Vista likes memory 2gb,, more is noticably better.

Windows 7 comes out end of October I believe so maybe try to get a rain check on a free upgrade when buying.

I myself prefer AMD when I can get them and I agree stay away from the Intel Celerons. There are single core,dual core and quad core processors the more cores the more speed and the more it can do at one time. You want at least 1 gig of ram but if it has Vista I would sure go for more than that. You will also run into 32bit or 64bit systems and 32 bit and 64 bit versions of windows. 64 bit can take and utilize much more ram but some programs are not yet available for 64bit windows so consider that. You can run 32bit windows on a 64bit system but you can not run 64 bit windows on a 32bit system.
If you can afford a 17 inch and not worry with the weight then go for it. You can always use a usb wireless mouse with it rather than the touch pad if you prefer, I know I do.
I would try to hold off till Windows 7 is out if you can or do as mentioned.

I just got an acer aspire one netbook which is quite small and it is very good for on the road travel but would not be a good choice for your day to day use just too small.

If you think of specifics you want to know about just ask.
Most all will have wireless of course.

You can pick up a new internal HD for peanuts but even if you find the original install disks you may not be able to install the OS on anything other than the original HD. This is one of the issues that makes me HATE PCs. I had to reformat my drive last summer and had to take out the new video card in order to install the original OS. Why do I prefer Macs? Simple, they just work. There is none of this Vista crap where peripherals no longer work, needing to update drivers etc. I can't tell you how many PCs we've had to throw out or replace parts but we've got 15 year old Macs that still run fine. Of course, they don't take enough RAM to be usable anymore but they still work. One of these days when I feel the urge to give myself a migraine I'm going to turn one of the original Bondi blue iMacs into a server for the PCs. Try doing that with a PC. And Vista, don't even get me started on that. Ever since peripherals began to be AC/DC when it comes to PCs or Macs I've only bought that which can be used on both. There is no way I'm letting an OS dictate what gadgets I can use. The next computer is an iBook running Parallels so I can use it for work. My rant for the day. I feel better already. Oh, yeah, Macs aren't really more expensive than PCs if you compare the standard features of a Mac versus the add ons you need for a PC.

Karen, I thought of Frou and Jeanne when I bought these dishes. Kinda of a cheesy picture but most of the time, I'm smiling. Jane, 'Blondie' check out those eyebrows and roots! My mom use to tell me she loved my blond hair and brown eyes when I was younger so when I did this change I asked if she liked the new me. No she didn't jump for joy over it.LOL The lady where I bought these dishes had so many neat things and I wish I would of bought more from her. She had the neatest clalm shells that were 6" and some lg star fish. Wouldn't of those looked great with the dishes? I had other more important things to take care of so didn't go there. Magpie, your so right, there isn't enough hours in my days to let grass grow under my feet! Laughed when reading your post about having to clean off the table before setting it! I always have a tablescape to keep the dust bunnies away. I would of never thought about using a teapot for flowers before joining all of you gals here. Wish I would take the time to go pick fresh flowers. I have 2 acres of them and rarely bring any in. Jeanne, yeah right, high school cheerleading pic. Your my hero! If it wouldn't take so long I would show you one of my Cheerleading pics. So tell me how you pictured me? Easy there... I think the color of the dishes is what drew me to them. I have aqua place mats and thought they would be great with the dishes but totally the wrong shade. The place mats I used have threads of every color in them. The little couple reminds me of Collin Raye's song "If You Get There Before I Do". To bad it plays a different melody while going around. Luvs, thanks and you know the rest of the story. You didn't nickname me Speedy for no reason.LOL Life is to short not to dance so I love the new saying 'Whatever' and that keeps me smiling most days. My husband does woodworking as a hobby so he built me some nice little wooden pedestals to put my towers on that go under my desk that lifts them up about 6" off the floor, it has made a world of difference when I open them up to clean them now. I did the same thing but raised the stand to make sure the computer top was level with my desk ,this adding some more usable desk surface,plus a nice little storage space for wires and such under the tower.Also, I only need to clean it about once a year instead of once a month.

Thanks Ravencajun and Mikie for responding. I am going to Best Buy (60 miles is the closest one) to see what they have available. I have written some notes from your replies. I will look for some alternatives to the Celeron. It sounds (reading between the lines) that you feel like a 15 inch screen is adequate.

Thanks again for clueing me in on some of the basics.

Best Buy somtimes pushes to sell their own extended warrantees.
Most laptop manufacturers will have way better service than best buy and probably for less money too.
My toshiba I could order extrended warrantee within the first year of purchase... they have all kinds of extended warrantees and prices. Even some that cover dropping it in a pool once per year is covered.

I have been leaning toward a Toshiba. My last three computers have been Dells, but I am considering a change. Is there any special Toshiba you would recommend?

I am thinking about having the Geek Squad to set up a wireless set up for me. That is way over my head. I want to keep my desktop.....and also have the laptop on the same network.

I'm a believer in Toshiba but I guess everybody believes in what they own. Personally I think the cheaper the better, buy the special on sale $399 dollar one. Looks fine.

BestBuy has had some write-ups lately that they offer a $49 Win7 pre-release/pre-purchase upgrade. If they don't offer a free deal, you might ask them about that deal and buy it too.

If you dont already have a wireless router your isp may supply one for reasonable money if not free. Or most of the major wifi router brands now have fairly simple CD install to get you up and running.

I have had several Toshibas which have been passed on to my grandchildren, they are now purchasing new Toshibas. As matter of fact, one just purchased a new Satellite L300- Cdn version 15.4", Core2Duo T6400, 4GBs RAM for around $500 last week on sale. Reg $800
