Condolences to Sherry (sheshebop)

There are few of us "old timers" left here, so I hesitated to post this here, especially since few seem to read this side any more.

However, those who remember Sherry probably also remember her husband Roger, a sweet, quiet, unassuming man who ate anything we'd cook and drove us about without complaint. He put up with us all when she hosted Canning Camp, in spite of the hoard of mostly women who invaded his home and his bathrooms.

Roger passed away last week at the very young age of 64, victim of a pulmonary embolism. He and Sherry had been married 45 years and he was the love of her life, as she was the love of his.

Roger was as much a member of the forum as Sherry, and the world is worse without him.

My heart goes out to Sherry and her kids plus the grands for the loss of this wonderfully sweet man. I have some very fond memories of Roger both at their home and here in Chicago.

Roger was a gentle man and a gentleman. He will be missed by many.

I'm just able to check back on this thread to see how you're doing, Sherry. I think it's wonderful you're back to work, although I'm sorry it's so difficult for you. I kind of understand that hair in the eye thing, as I have growths on my eyeballs that give me that feeling all the time. I never can remember what they're called, but it's one of those words that start with pts...or tps, or some other odd spelling. Anyway, it's not nearly as serious as a blood clot, but is ugly and irritating nontheless. My Opthamologist allows me to use the tear type eye drops, but not the kind that "gets the red out." Are you allowed to use eye drops to ease the discomfort? Sally

I couldn't let my sister have her special day without a celebration! And Karen helped make it even better with a great last minute lunch,(sorry about that, you do great under pressure) a boat cruise and the neighbor with his entertainment. Complete with a toga! I'm late posting this one but it has been a big hit with my group more than once!! I'd love a copy of all of the recipes when time allows. Posted by dishesdone (My Page) on Fri, Mar 10, 06 at 21:26 This was also in this month's Chocolatier magazine and looked sinful! Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Cake with Frozen Milk Frozen Milk: 3 1/2 cups whole milk 1/2 cup granulated sugar 3 1/2 tablespoons light corn syrup 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Chocolate cake: 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons alkalized cocoa powder (preferably Valrhona), sifted 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 large eggs 1 cup whole milk 1/2 cup canola oil 2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons boiling water Ganache: 1 pound milk chocolate (preferably Valrhona Jivara or Guittard) 1 1/2 cups heavy cream Dacquoise layer: 1/3 cup sliced almonds 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar 2 large egg whites, at room temperature 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/2 cup salted peanuts, chopped Peanut butter crunch: 1 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 cup Skippy creamy peanut butter 3 ounces milk chocolate (preferably Valrhona Jivara or Guittard) 1 cup Rice Krispies Make the Frozen Milk: Combine all ingredients except vanilla extract. Bring to boil over medium-high heat. Transfer mixture to medium bowl and set bowl in large bowl filled one-third of way with ice water. Let stand, stirring occasionally, until chilled, about 20 minutes. Stir in vanilla. Process in ice cream machine according to manufacturers instructions. (Frozen Milk is best when served the same day.) Make chocolate cake: Position rack in center of oven and preheat oven to 350°F. Spray 9" x 13" pan with non-stick cooking spray. Place all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and whisk to combine. In a separate bowl, mix together all wet ingredients except water; pour into dry ingredients. Stir until well combined. Add boiling water and stir to combine. Pour into prepared pan and bake until cake springs back when touched in middle, about 30-40 minutes. Cool cake in pan set on wire rack for 20 minutes. Invert cake onto rack and cool completely. Make ganache: Melt chocolate in microwave or double boiler. In small saucepan, bring cream to a gentle boil and gradually whisk into melted chocolate. Set aside. Make dacquoise: Position rack in the center of oven and preheat to 375°F. Using 13" x 9" baking pan as a guide, trace a rectangle onto a piece of parchment paper. Turn paper over and place on a large baking sheet. Combine sliced almonds and confectioners' sugar in food processor and process until finely ground. Set aside. In bowl of electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, whip egg whites on medium speed to soft peaks, gradually adding granulated sugar while whipping. Once stiff and shiny, fold in almond flour mixture. Spread into 9" x 13" rectangle on prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle top with chopped peanuts and bake until browned, 12-15 minutes. Set aside to cool on wire rack. Make peanut butter crunch: In medium bowl, combine butter, peanut butter and chocolate. Place bowl over saucepan filled one-third of way with simmering water. Heat, stirring occasionally, until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth. Stir in Rice Krispies. Spread chocolate mixture evenly over dacquoise. Freeze until firm, about 20 minutes. Using a serrated knife, cut chocolate cake in half horizontally for form 2 layers. Spread one-third of ganache on top of bottom half. Remove dacquoise from freezer and peel off parchment paper. Place dacquoise, peanut butter crunch-side up, on top of ganache covered cake; gently press to remove any air pockets. Spread half of remaining ganache over peanut butter crunch. Place second half of cake on top. Refrigerate until ganache is set, about 1 hour. Using serrated knife, carefully trim off rough edges of cake. Rewarm remaining ganache over a pot of simmering water, and spread over top of cake. Serve a square of cake with a scoop of frozen milk. This was such a shock!! He was such a strong (in many ways) and as Annie says, put up with us graciously.

Talking to Sherry last week, she showed strength, but then we know our Sheshebop has an indomitable will and family support to get her through this.

Roger was a truly beautiful human being. He will be dearly missed.

Sherry is doing as well as can be expected, her family are there for her. I am afraid that after the services are over and everyone goes back home that she will have some very rough days ahead.

I wish I was not so far away.....

Even though I didn't participate in your activities, I always enjoyed the posts and especially the photographs.

Roger seemed like a wonderful guy and probably had as much fun as anyone.

Such sad news to draw me here. Roger was spoken of so nicely by those who met him. Seemed that he and Sherry made a wonderful couple. Sherry, I'm glad you have your wonderful family and you sure have many here.

Yes, it is sad to be drawn to this side of the CF for this reason. Sherry, I have very happy memories of meeting your sweet Roger. He was so kind to all of us that invaded your home during Canny Camp.

My thoughts have been with you and your family and I will continue to pray for strength during this difficult time.

This is a very sad day, not only for Sherry and her family but for everyone that ever had the pleasure of meeting Roger. He was everything good you could want in another person.

I have opted to visit Sherry as soon as I can, rather than going to the funeral, I think she will understand.

I remember the time when Annie wrote about Sherry and Roger coming to visit her. If I remember correctly, they stayed in their camper, which was parked in Annie's driveway. Roger seemed like such a nice guy and a good sport to support his wife's friendships.

It was just so sad to hear this news. I knew Roger had some health issues but thought that they were resolved and he was on his way to back to regular life. I feel just terrible about this and have been thinking of Sherry every since I got the news.

I know she is being very strong. Hugs to Sherry.

The service for Roger was this afternoon in a room full of his and Sherrys family and and many friends. There were tears as well as laughter as we paid our respects and said see you again someday. His son Eric and his granddaughter delivered very touching eulogies.

I, Annie and her DH Elery and many others on this forum had the joy of meeting Roger on several occasions. Quiet, stoic, tall and straight, he would deadpan some wonderful zingers to our antics. We invaded his home, disrupted his days and he took it all with good grace and I think laughed both with us and at us. When my Mom passed both he and Sherry came to Chicago for her memorial. I was indeed fortunate to have them there.

One of his greatest passions, after his love for Sherry, was fishing. I have a feeling that Roger is at a lake in heaven, catching some lovely fish.

He will be missed.

I'm late to the post, however I'm pleased to see so many old friends on this thread. Roger was indeed a gentleman in very sense of the world. I had the pleasure of his company during Canny Camp and he will forever be in my heart.
His hospitality and good humor will never be forgotten, I wish that I had photos of him digging out the front lawn to clear a clog in the septic tank after a group of crazy CF'ers disrupted the septic system! Never cross, he took it all in good stride. He was a true mensch.
Sherry, our heart goes out to you and the family. Know that the love and kindness from all around are here to sustain you through the difficult days ahead. RIP Roger, you were one special guy!

Peppi, Thank you for the update, I'm glad you and Annie were there, I know it meant a lot to Sherry.

When the HG and I stayed with Roger and Sherry it was amazing how Roger and Ray hit it off like they were long time friends. They talked at length and didn't need the wives to facilitate at any point.

Ellen, thanks for reminding me about the septic tank problem. At the time I was thinking about how we would have freaked out, but Roger was cool as the proverbial cucumber.

I have tried three times to send all my thanks and this darned arm brace keeps hitting a key that closes this out. Thank you all for the kind words and memories about my wonderful husband. Thank you Peppi and Annie (and Elery) for being with me and for those with me in spirit. And thank you Barb (a lurker for many years) for coming also. And Peppi, thank you for that picture. That was his favorite shirt and I have slept with it every night since he passed. Dexter misses his Daddy so much, as do our little grandchildren that we are raising. Tristin wonders who will take him fishing. I am still in shock and don't know where to start...I start tidying the house, then get sidetracked by cleaning out his papers...then get sidetracked again. Your strength and prayers are needed and wanted. Thanks again for remembering me and for all the kind thoughts, words, and memories.

It was wonderful to hear from you in the post above. I hope you know that so many of your friends here on the CF are thinking of you, remembering Roger, and saying prayers for you and your family.

I'm so glad I have the memories from the time we met for dinner in Durham a few years ago. It was a fun evening for all of us.

Peppi, I agree, Roger is standing at the River Jordan, a fishing pole in one hand and a root beer in the other, with an endless supply of "beaver flicks" ready for the fly rod.

Sherry, Elery and I were privileged to be there to help send Roger on to his next great adventure, Elery liked Roger very much and greatly enjoyed his wry sense of humor and endless good humor. I'm sad they never got to take that fishing trip together, but the fishing will be even better in the next life.

If Eric doesn't fish, maybe Tristan will have to take Elery instead....

I will remind you that I not only have a farm and a horse, I have grandchildren that would love to play with Tristan and Arianna, and a lake full of bluegill right down the road. You know I'll come and get you and my invitation extends to the grandkids as well as you.

Sherry, I hope you are doing well. It is nice to read so many messages here from the CF oldtimers. I feel so close to you all, although I've only met a few in real life. How wonderful that Peppi, Annie and Elery could be there to represent all of us. Many hugs.

OMG...I'm sorry (laughing out loud...and snorting...)"endless supply of Beaver Flicks" just brought back a flood of really fun memories of the Michigan Run party at Annie's when I first met Roger and Elery. (Guffaw!)

Oh yeah.....Roger was one in a million!
