Comments (11)Unless you get a larger side by side (42"+) which means built in and a lot more money, a side by side is big on cubic space, but it isn't great on shelf space. Shelf space is more important than cubic space. Plenty of folks have switched from a top freezer model to a side by side and complained that their old 22 cu.ft. model held more than their new 25 cu.ft. one. They are partially right. A top freezer model has 85% of the volume as a side by side, but the continuous shelf space is much better in a top freezer. French doors have the whole width of the cavity available for storage of odd sized objects like party platters, pizza boxes, and full sheet cakes. They have more continuous shelf space, which translates into more actual storage. The bottom freezer drawer pulls to you, and is far more ergonomic than getting on your hands and knees to find the last pack of frozen peas way back at the bottom, or the already liquified salad greens down in the bottom of the refrigerator bin. The large drawer has a separator(s) to help keep items organized, and you have another drawer and door bins as well. Comments (8)Unfortunately, I only learn about new stove releases when I happen to stumble across the news. I do know what you mean about being "somewhat underwhelmed by current offerings." Regarding your interest in a bridging element, we are going a bit off topic here, but if you are looking for an induction capable burner spanning griddle, you might want to check out the Zwilling website's clearance of their DeMeyere branded Plancha/Griddle/Teppanyaki. Here is the link. For me, this multi-layered, induction capable Demeyere griddle pretty much solves the problem with most griddles I've used --- that of being much hotter over burners than over the area between them. I've had no trouble cooking pancakes on the middle space and having them done as soon as the outer ones. I like the plancha better than standalone electric griddles like the Broil King because the DeMeyere heats just as evenly, sotres more conveniently, and also doubles as a really great roasting pan. Comments (15)I will second the recommendation from oneandonlybobjones to look at the Bosch 300 series. Bosch refreshed its line-up earlier this year and the new 800 and 300 series were just reaching stores in our area when I was DW shopping last month. The model I bought (from Lowe's) was the SHE863WF but the differences within the 300 are pretty much only differences in door and control configurations and whether you want to panel your DW. I discussed that purchase in this thread from last month, if you have not already seen it. To sum up -- excellent cleaning, more capacity than previous Bosch models I've owned, and more configuration flexibility. The new model tends to take about two hours for a full load whichis not uncommon for any make these days (and some of them take a lot longer.) The Bosch 300 series does a good job on the 30-minute clean cycle, too, if you are in a hurry, but does not dry well on the short cycle. (For me, that problm is usually solved by propping the door open for about ten minutes after the cycle finishes and then most things are dry enough to put away.) FWIW, I bought my first Bosch DWs in 1998. I've never missed having a grinder nor have I missed having an exposed drying element in the bottom of my DW. I have never run into the problems that some folks have such as not drying well (which sometimes seems related to non-use of rinse-aids) nor bad smells and/or gunk on the filters (which mostly seemed related to the particular water supply and the chosen detergent -- switching detergent seems to fix many but not all) such problems.) Tine positioning and spacing has never been a problem for me but it can be for some folks' dishes and kitchenware. Comments (13)Thanks Rita, we were worried on the whole magnetic thing with indcution. Do you own a cell phone or a microwave? Do you sit in front of your computer? If you do, they are supposedly more dangerous than an induction cooktop. Realize of course I'm not making light of your concerns and they are valid concerns. However I think there really is no reason to fear induction. Have a look at THIS ARTICLE from The Induction Site. And here's an excellent ARTICLE about induction cooking and its safety.
