Back-up to HD or DVD?

We still need a system to back up our files and photos. I'm looking into Acronis True Image 10 Home.

I'm wondering if it would be sufficient to back up our files to DVD. Do we need a back-up HD instead?

I wish there was a set of instructions that says (1) Get this [HD / DVD], (2) Install [this s/w], (3) press [this button]. Reading multiple conflicting comments about software, hardware and media just confuses me all the more.

The only items you have to back up are things you cannot reinstall from disks you either got with your computer or bought later.

Anything like pictures, documents, saved games if you play games, your "favorites" from your browser, etc., which aren't programs you install, you need to back up. Pretty much anything you've had to hit "save" for needs back up.

The whole hard drive seems like too much in my opinion. I keep CDs or DVDs of all above items. I have had to replace hard drives and that was enough to take care of the reinstall.

I forgot music files, need them on back up too, but as they take up so much room, you might want to keep duplicates on another computer in your home. If you have a lot of music, the back up hard drive could become an option. We keep our music on two home computers for that reason.

Hi, my dear friend, very thanks for your reply. actually before formatting the hard disk my software files i.e., .exe files got corrupted every where in the original form as well as in the backup folders in all other 3 partitions i use to keep my same backups. before corrupting the exe files i saw that many of the folders of all 4 partitions where consisting duplicate folder into folder as you go on inside each folder there was an automatic inside folder creating by it self if open the duplicate folder it was hanging my laptop if without opening to that folder i was deleting to such duplicate created folders, this was happening with my laptop so without any suggestions form other i formatted partitions c install fresh window later we can backup in c and then will format the rest of 3 partition but unfortunately i lost all the data what ever the basic procedure is there i followed but i am unable to get my data back

The short answer is probably no. If you are referring to "ready boost" the idea was to use something like a thumb (jump, flash) drive to act as system cache because those drives are typically much faster a traditional hard drive. So using a hard drive wouldn't accomplish anything. I'd suggest using either a thumb drive or adding system memory.

It could get very complicated if you are wanting to record tv on both a DVR and a DVD. Do you know for a fact that your DVD recorder has it's own tuner? If it does not, you will only be able to record the channel that your Dish box is tuned to if you can connect it to the Dish box. If it does have it's own tuner, then perhaps a splitter would do. To me, installing an amplifier/splitter on the incoming satellite feed would be the best way to approach this. Each device could then be programmed and controlled separately. We still need to know if there are enough inputs on the tv to accept multiple devices and what type they are. It might be possible to accomplish this with a splitter only, but you might need a satellite tech to determine if the signal loss by being split would be detrimental to viewing/recording.

I need help. I bought a new 42 inch screen Magnavox HD TV set. We are a member of the Direct TV Satellite Cable Network. The dish is outside of the house with a coaxil cable entering the home to a black box that sits beside the TV. A coaxil cable leaves the black box to a Power Surge Protector Electrical strip. Another coaxil cable leaves this connection to the TV back input area. The TV channels, volume, etc are controlled by the handheld Dish Remote Control. The Magnovox TV remote is not used. I have a Symphonic DVD Player and the red, white, yellow wire set and its own remote control. I have an Emerson VCR with a coaxil connector wire and its own remote controller. I do not know where to connect the VCR coaxil wire to the TV. The TV set has overall, 3 sites for the colored wire connection ports. (1) an area on the left side near the back of the screen for the yellow,red,white connection, and 2 separate areas called line 1 and line 2 connections (but a double set of plugs of red, white and yellow colored ports in this assembly)which is very confusing. Which row do I use? Goal: I want to know how to connect the VCR and the DVD. They are to be used separately. Do I hook up these 2 separately at the varied colored port areas, and they run independently with their remotes? Do I connect to the black box? Do I run the DVD through the back out hook-up of colored ports to the colored inports at the VCR front area and connect to the TV via a coaxil somehow?....Is the black box involved or bypassed? Please keep the insructions simple. The 3 sets of appliance directions are too confusing. I am having trouble with each appliance and the individual directions are not helpful to me with the currently used Direct TV Dish system. Thank you in advance.

That is the plan.... to back up just the essential and saved files, not the programs.

I tried using the already-installed Sonic program to back up to DVD+RW. I formatted it using Sonic, then Sonic told me it is either corrupt, or not compatible with Windows. HUH? Previously it contained an ISO image file that I burned a few months ago. After a few tries I gave up and decided to buy a different brand of DVD that I know works on our system.

If no one can give me a hint as to why this doesn't work, I'll give AShampoo a try, sounds good.

Jenn, I usually just put a blank cd (or DVD) into the drive and when it loads I hit the reduce button, not the one that drops it out of sight, just reduce to half size. Then I go into "my computer" thru the icon on the desktop, then I click on "My Documents" and most everything I want to move is there. Then I reduce that page to half size and I start dragging things into the cd open screen and dropping them in. Works for me. If an item isn't in "My Documents", you can look for it and drag and drop it in too. When the disk is full, another screen comes up and says, "Copy these files to CD (DVD"?), or something like that, click on it and it goes to work. It's built into Win XP which I assume you are using.

As I said before, the music files are too big, at least for cd's, so I can't get many of them copied this way.

It's free and probably a little more trouble than the program above?, but just thought I'd mention the method.
