Anyone else scooping up those fall bargains at Lowe's/HD?

I sure have been....like I needed any more plants to bring in for winter.

Here's some of my "just-can't-resist" buys:

A ZZ plant for $.50...yes, that's 50 CENTS! I heard a woman asking the cashier for a price, and that's what the cashier said...as soon as the woman put it down, I snatched it up. And it wasn't even in bad shape, better yet!

Chlorophytum "Fireflash" for $2.00...that one's a bit chewed up, but still a large plant. No thinking about that one. LOL

A GIANT Syngonium for $3.00. Just gorgeous, nothing wrong with it at all.

A large (6ft) palm, don't know the type, it's one I often see at home improvement places...think that one was $2.75.

Two large baskets of Pothos for $2.00 each.

A BUNCH of succulents for $.50 - $1.50, picked up 6 or 7.

I still have the urge to swing by Lowe's every time I'm in the neighborhood just to see what they have now.....but I'm resisting so far.

I'm coming to your Lowe's! They never have clearance sales like that here. The cheap plants are at least $7.00, going up to around $30.00. You got lucky and found some awesome deals! If you get tired of your Fireflash I'll provide a warm loving home for it : )

Ours marks down but not quite that low. I got a 6 inch pot anthurium for $3.00, an 8 inch pot of Hoya Tsangii for $5.00, a 10 inch pot of another anthurium (huge plant) for $7.00 (originally about $30, and a gorgeous upright begonia (sold as annual but can be a houseplant) for 50 cents. The begonia has been blooming its heart out and the leaves are gorgeous.

This is a great thread. I first have to say that I had my husband look at some of this, and I will say upfront that he is totally engaged (he does most of the cooking). But I'm terrible. My family is here and rated me at a 9.5 out of 10 for being a witch the hours before a party. I remember yelling at my daughter because I had just hung up a perfect clean towerl on the hanging ring and went in, they had used it, and wadded it up over the ring. I yelled at them, and still feel bad about it today. Most importantly because I don't want them to think that entertaining is awful and never have a dinner party because they remember it being hell day. I grew up with my mother keeping a horrendous house. It was a mess, and I mean a mess. Counters piled with crap, dishes not done for days, and she didn't care. She was always having friends stop by. Even as a young child, it embarassed me to all heck. I can still remember coming home from babysitting at midnight or so when I was 12 or 13 years old (I started young), and I would clean the kitchen from top to bottom. It would take a couple of hours. I was different than her even back then. When my dad remarried, it was Martha Stewart land. She had to have it spotless. Every Saturday was crack and corner day. We quite literally had to pull the couch out and vacuum under it at least every other week, and we had to bleach the counters. Crazy the other way! So, I can't seem to have anyone over unless my house is totally cleaned! And our parties themselves are quite memorable to everyone who comes. They talk about it afterward for weeks. I do enjoy having wonderful parties but I also wish I could relax about my house. I know its wrapped up in my childhood psyche. I will even make sure the main counters are clean as guests are arriving for a dinner party. And that's while we're using the kitchen! But I'm also so proud of our kitchen and want to show it off. Now one time, we had a Chinese extravaganze where we covered our desk with Chinese ingredients, friends came over at noon and didn't leave until midnight. The men mostly cooked and it was a blast. Every inch of every counter was covered with crap. I remember walking in the kitchen, the dust was flying from someone rolling out potstickers while someone else was frying a whole fish over the wok burner, and someone else was mixing something up. I didn't care what the kitchen looked like that day. I'll never forget that party. I don't know if I'll ever change about the clean house though. It's so engrained in me. Well, my husband is making London Broil so I'm off to the kitchen!! Great stories though. I think we have more in common than we realized.

Well -- our old USED cars were bought in 1997: a) 1993 BMW wagon (146,000 miles) and had been repaired MANY times -- and currently needed the whole AC replaced. Frankly I was getting too scared to drive her anymore -- wondering what would break down next. This car did NOT qualify for the program -- and became a trade-in. I would imagine that its value was in the parts that I replaced over the last two years! So its parts may benefit someone! b) 1993 Lexus (185,000 miles) This car DID qualify for the program -- and was leaking "something" onto the driveway -- and the very last time DH drove it to the dealership -- even HE said that he was glad for it to be gone too! Interior lights didn't work; the sunroof didn't work -- lots of mechanical issues. I really don't think the either car would be a good "clunker" for anyone else -- unless they had the money for the expensive repairs! WE HAD ALREADY PLANNED TO REPLACE BOTH CARS! Out of sheer necessity. Again I state: we saved for TWO years. We argued and checked out cars for last six months. We NEVER planned to get NEW cars -- the "fates" simply rolled them our way!! We had been looking for USED ones -- but the prices for the outgoing 2009 ones were NOT that much more than the used ones!!! And we negotiated HARD. And paid in cash. Plans , what are plans when you are in the woods. I am "anti plans". I do the meander with hori hori philosophy of planting. I like to think of what nature would do . Where would the different plants want to grow with a tad of impromptu on the spot aesthetic consideration thrown in . A clumping here and then wander to another outcropping and pleasurable red oak spot and more planting tumbling down the slope. Camp, What is your survival rate in your small seedling plantings the wild. I am hoping for better this winter. The nolina seedlings I put out this spring did horrendously. I found 3 out of 30 or so. But I was fearful of that when I put them out in April but I dug them in anyway. The ground was Dust dry all the way down deep because of how dry the winter was. I was hoping for May rains but they did not materialize. I almost held them back till fall, but then I would not have room to plant more seeds. The perennial garden dilemma..I need to shut up clean the kitchen and get back out to stabbing the ground.

I was thinking of getting a weeping white spruce (picea glauca) to put in the place of the hemlock but after seeing what they cost, it was hard to convince DW to fork out another $300-500 to get one of any size and I'm not patient enough to start with a very small one. My next thought was picea abies would look nice there but for some reason, nobody seemed to carry the smaller potted trees anymore around my area. All types of spruces were high priced and seemed to be hard to find this year, for some reason. Finally, I found a tree grower who was gracious enough to sell me a potted P. Abies from his stock he'll be planting soon. I waited over an hour at his fields while he tended to customers, but it was worth the wait. I was expecting a seedling in a half gallon pot, but was happy to see it was a 30" tree in a 3 gal. pot. :-) He explained to me how to slit the sides of the root ball before planting, which I did but when I tried to find the root flare, the red flags went off. I took off over 1-1/2" of extra soil from the top layer in the pot before finding the root flare. In turn found a couple of good-sized roots growing up from the top of the root flare and were circling around the trunk area in that top layer of soil. (You can see the white spots of the snipped roots just right of trunk (next pic) and the soil line (dark part of trunk) where the original soil line was in the pot). I've read that P. Abies isn't as fussy as most trees are about getting planted too deep but didn't want to take chances and circling roots are never a good idea to leave without fixing. So anyways, got the P. Abies species tree planted, and it shouldn't be long for it to start looking nice. The buds were just breaking when I was planting today. 77df. When clearing the old mulch for planting, I found at least 3" deep of composted wood mulch under the top layer of mulch, I suppose from the last 7 years of applying mulch around the hemlock. Now you know 'The rest of the story'. ;-)

Wow, you people are lucky..I don't even have a Lowe's near my house..the closest is about 20 miles..and as far and HD, they never had sales..I can't believe the prices you guys mention. Even if it's difficult finding a spot in your homes, (even though you will) you really found bargains..Now I feel like going to HD>>LOL..Toni

Wish I had either 20 miles away. The closest is 45 miles. Was in Ann Arbor over the weekend and stopped at their Lowe's. Got three orchids for $6 $4 and $5, that was 75% off, good deals to me, two were still flowering, and I found a butterwort plant I had been coveting at Logee's there for about 1/4 of what I would have ordered it for!
Wish I had that Lowe's here.....

Well, you all got me searching online to see if we have any HD or Lowes in NYC (I didn't think we did).

I work in Manhatttan, live in Brooklyn, the Brooklyn one is not accessable to me, but the first in Manhattan is. See what you've done to me (I HATE shopping)! Now I'll have to go check out HD & see if I can find any of these deals, esp. on Hoyas! You are all VERY bad influences on me ;>)

You guys are lucky! I have to drive about 130 miles to get to a Lowe's or HD-and I do it about once a month! I don't get to go until december though! I might have to find an excuse to go pretty soon...hmmm... Maybe I will have to find some puppies there to pick up for my pet store...

I go to lowes all of the time and the best deal I have found was a half dead bonsai (unlabled) for $7.50 it is coming back nicely though I would love just find a zz , century or hoya for any price... I did find tons of cacti and succs at Walmart for 50 cents or $1 depending on size I have bought 8 so far this week well who knows

I visited another Lowe's last night and was surprised to see all their tropicals marked down 50%. The best deal I got a huge 8 inch basket of Hoya Curtisii for $7.99 (marked down from $15.97) and it is a very full plant-nothing at all wrong with it. It's been hanging at that Lowe's for a couple of months now and I guess no one recognized its value-poor thing! :( The same Lowe's did have a Hoya Polyneura but I guess someone finally bought it.

But..also got a 6 inch anthurium for $4.00 and a 6 inch Diffenbachia Triumph for $3.00. I'm thinking of going back to check out their large floor plants.

Another visit to Lowe's and their tropicals are marked down 75%. I got a 10 inch pot of snake plant for $1.00, 5 inch philo prince of orange for 74 cents, Dieffenbachia Camille for 74 cents etc.

I have both Lowes and HD maybe 10 minutes away from me. They're like Burger King and Mcdonalds here, they have one in every corner!! But they're prices don't come down, If anything they seem to be going up. I remember last year I could find a 8 inch hoya hanging basket for $8 and now they're $15. HD has much cheaper prices than Lowes right now. HD 8 inch baskets are $10, 5 dollars more for the same plant at Lowes. Of course compare to buying on-line they're definitely bargains.

I donÂt have a Lowes near by but my Fred Meyers is selling their cyclamen at .50 cents each! I bought three of them!

Wow,what great deals! I would love to get my hands on another ZZ,especially for .50 cents. Have you id your palm yet mocountry? Where in zone 5b/6a are you? I'm in S.E. Michigan and used to get deals like that more at Lowes than HD. I have not been in awhile thinking that I have too many plants,but if I could find deals like that...
Maybe it's time to check out the garden dept again lol.

I'm in Southeast MO, about 90 miles south of St Louis, near Farmington....never can tell quite where I'm at on the zone maps--the line between 5 & 6 is nearby.....tho with the winters I've been having here, I'd say I'm closer to z6 now....I've had dahlias & gladiolus overwinter here for several years now.

Hey Tim. Well map or no map, with the winters we get here sometimes I feel as like I'm in Antartica,lol.
How do the glads do for you. I normally only get them when I go to the farmers market on the weekends during warmer weather.

Wow! A ZZ plant for .50! I can't even find one here at all, let alone for .50! Could you tell me what it was labeled as exactly? Was it labeled ZZ Plant, Aroid Palm, Succulent Philodendron, or Zamioculcas zamiifolia? I'm going to call my Lowe's and see if they have it by any chance! Thanks so much!

The only thing that goes on end of season sales at the HD's and Lowe's here are the perennials and annuals. I think they jack up the prices on their house plants! I'm probably better off because I'm running out of room as it is. lol

hey all, i run a home depot nursery in arizona and these are very common! we deal out these typs of bargains all the time! just ask. if it dont look good, name your price! 9 out of 10 times we will give it to you! otherwise we throw it away! we like to see our customers bring us pics of these plants 6 mo. later! we would rather see you grow it than throw it away!

I bought a Hoya tsangii as well once, it was $16 originally marked down to $3. There was nothing wrong with it! All besides a few broken leaves and dry soil. They had a beautiful African Violet there once; still mad at my self for not picking it up.
