No Sound, No Volume Icon, No Audio Device

Hello Everyone,

I have a Dell Laptop model 9400 running Windows XP Pro. IE 8.

I noticed this morning I have no Volume Icon in my task bar. Has happened before, but just would restart and would come back. Not this time. Went into the audio section in Control and says I have NO audio device! Only sound I have is that horrible BEEP sound when you make a mistake, and that comes on whenever I get an email???? Really weird.

I've started/re-started. Just wonder if there's anything else I should do before checking for new drivers, or do a system restore?

Thanks so much for your help. I did a search before posting this, but the posts I found weren't quite like I'm experiencing.

Do a system restore that's what it's there for, + you can undo a restore point if for some reason you didn't like the results.

Thanks zep516 for your reply. Yes, I know you're right, I've just never done that before, so was hoping there was some other "button to press" etc. Ok, I'll try it.

Kudzu9--I didn't see your suggestion before my last post. I just tested that and it's just another way to change the volume. If I set it all the way down using the Fn-F11, then look in control panel, the volume slider is all the way to the left. I haven't tried any headphones, but they're basically just another variation of an unpowered speaker, so my expectation is that they'd be pretty much inaudible. Since she wants to use the laptop to play audio books while in several rooms, headphones wouldn't be useful to her anyway.

Success! I love you people! Spent the past hour or two checking out your recommendations and printing out each step/window so I'd know where I'd been! DayLily, Frankly I don't know if I have a sound card or on-board sound. I can't find any reference to answer those questions (that I can interpret anyway) from running Belarc Advisor. I'd rather buy another computer than open up mine! Moths and dust would undoubtedly fly out! :) I appreciate your input. Thank you. Luis, My speakers are connected directly to my monitor. Since I didn't want to unplug a bunch of things and lug either my monitor and speakers into the other room or disconnect my husband's computer and bring it in here, I decided to check out the Control Panel's Sounds and Audio Devices. The first tab (Volume) had 'Mute' checked! Couldn't believe it. I thought I'd gone into every nook and cranny by now! I unchecked 'Mute' and really did look everywhere in that window this time. Also, under Advanced Audio Properties > Speakers, I changed the Speaker Setup from 'Monitor stereo speakers' to 'Desktop stereo speakers.' (Wouldn't have done that except the latter had pictures that shows my setup. Ha.) One or more of those actions must have done the trick. 'Thanks' is not adequate enough! But I do thank you so much Owbist, I went everywhere you suggested. I had been in some of those 'places' before, but I guess just not where to fix the problem. I'd seen those yellow exclamation marks, (...System Properties > Device Manager > Sound...), but when I'd click on one of the yellow jobbers > Unknown device Properties > DRIVER TAB > Driver Details or Update Driver, I'd get some kind of error message when I'd try to update a driver. It wasn't until I went to the GENERAL TAB and then REINSTALL DRIVER that worked to banish the yellows! Wow! Thanks! Raven, If you've read this novel this far, you were probably right about the sound being muted and I just hadn't seen that particular window before, although I'd seen the volume window somewhere in my earlier travels and no mute boxes were checked and I'd raised the volume sliders up higher. Several times prior, I'd moved the couch, gotten out my flashlight and trusty magnifying glass and unplugged, re-plugged, and deciphered the almost invisible icons on my monitor, speakers, and computer backside. :) Thank you. Well, folks, before I posted this, I listened to 3 songs and did a Hallelujah! I'm thrilled. And it's all because of you. I'm going to bed now. No audio output device is installed

Vista has had an issue with high definition audio devices from the beginning and would generate that error No audio output device is installed. There was a windows update that was supposed to address the issue. Make sure you are running Service pack 2 on vista. That's all I could suggest for now. Your description sounds like the audio service isn't always starting that's a guess. There's a few users that have gone around in circles with that error. If you Google No audio output device is installed Vista you will see some of the complaints posted on other forums.

Might look off the start button Programs/Accessories/Entertainment .. Volume Control,,, within it most will have a checkbox for show in tray Also in device manager Sounds might have a check box for show in tray.

Thanks Zep, it worked---however----now when it restarted I now have lost my whole bar that has "Favorites" etc. Only way I could get back here was to type in the address again. Don't how this has happened, but that whole bar is gone. Any ideas on this? Sorry to be a pest. Thanks.

If you are using IE in the browser at the top look for tools click it a window opens make sure there is a CHECK MARK next to MENU BAR.

Hi Zep, Well that's part of the problem, there's not even a tool "button". What happened was I lost the Kvolume icon when I was in IE7 yesterday, but today I downloaded IE8. When I lost the volume icon all else was Ok. Status bar was up (favorites, tools, files, edit etc) I have the Google bar also. Now the Status bar is gone. Can't even get to the menueUpside sound is GREAT!

Oh boy 1 thing at a time, no tool button I would suggest un installing IE8 and return to IE7 which will occur automaticaly, IE8 should be in the add/remove programs an the option to uninstall it like I said the computer will automatically revert to IE7, I know you don't want to do this but it's all I can think of. You also need to read some things about IE8 if you have not before installing it we can get some links for that..

Are you sure there is no tool button in ie it is on the other side the RIGHT side I am talking about below the search box CHECK AGAIN

ie8 installs has problems with some google toolbars...

right click the bottom status bar and do properties,, notification tab ... one item there is show the volume icon.

you can also press ALT key to show the toolbar then the view menu item has Tool Bars ... and a check mark for Menu

Ok, all, this is what I have. When I did the restore I was running IE 8, but had IE 7 when it restored back to Wed. So I assume I am now in 7. My tool bar seems to be Google, I don't think I have the IE tool bar which seems to be my problem. When I had it normally two days ago I had both. I had the IE bar (status, with tools, favs, etc), and also the Google bar. Now I only have the Google although it's restored back to Weds.

Boy is that confusing enough??? BTW Mikie, I have hit the ALT and all I get is a dissappearing "circle".

Do you have a bar right below your Google toolbar with 2 stars to the left of it..then the name of this thread..and then a little square where you can do a new Tab? If so ..go to the right of that on a clear spot..right click... and see if there is a place there to click on menu bar, Status bar and etc....Not sure if you have it but worth a shot..

Thank you for your reply. Actually when this happened I did not have anything below the Google Bar. Now, as of a few minutes ago, I reinstalled IE8 and whatever was going on is now OK. Sound on and IE status bar is back.
