Dell Vista 1st full backup screwed up

I have a Dell Vista home system, never backed it up, until yesterday's attempt. ( Terrible, I know. Mea culpa.) I directed the backup to my D "RECOVERY" disc,because D is listed as the "Recovery" disc, but I now suspect that D is for the system to use, not me, because the backup failed due to lack of space. Now I'm being nagged by the system with "you're almost out of disc space" type nags. My main disc "C" still has plenty of space, so I'm guessing it needs space on D to do its work.

I think D was empty before this mess, but I'm not positive. If it's just used for temporary files, etc., I could delete all the folders on it, which look like the backup of the folders on the C disc. D now contains Dell, Program Files, Program Data, Sources, Tools, Users, Windows and MediaID.bin. All of these except Sources and Tools also reside on the C disc.

I can't find any way to tell on what date these folder were put on D; the only date shown is date last modified. If I could see they were placed there on the date I ran the backup, I'd feel more confident about deleting them.

I could try renaming the files on D and see if the system chokes after I do it. If not, then delete?

I knew I should have left well-enough alone. Sigh.

Disk D is the partition to restore your computer to it's original state. Just as it was when you received it. You should not try to store anything else there. Back up your computer on dvd's or get an external disk for that purpose. Did you make the restore disks when you got your computer? If not you need to do so. Tell us make and model of computer and someone can help. If the hard drive fails you can't use the restore partition so you need the disks.

Before doing anything else you need to determine if you have already made recovery disks. If you have not done that then do so before any other actions are taken for safety sake. If you do not know how to proceed just Google 'create dell recovery disks' without the quotes for a tutorial.

Backing up onto the the D: partition is almost useless because that is simply another area on the same hard drive. In other words, if the hard drive fails you are still in big trouble.

Once those recovery disks are created you can play in the D: partition.

Erin, a few things right off the bat. Check the roots to see if you're dealing with rot rot. What potting soil do you have this little tree in? Secondly, 40 degrees is nothing for citrus, especially most mandarins (especially if it's a Satsuma variety, extremely cold tolerant). BUT, we did have temps below that recently, depending on where you are in relation to the coast. Where are you, exactly? I'm in Vista, about 6 miles inland, but up in the hills, so it's milder on my property, save for some cold pockets (my lot slopes downhill, north to south, so the south side of my lot is literally a hole that the cold air rolls down into and sinks - only 1 citrus tree down there and it's a variegated lemon that is holding its own, amazingly, right next to an avocado tree, also hanging in there!) I think you've probably got either a bad case of root rot, or some sort of extensive root damage. Can you not plant this poor little guy in the ground?? Here are the 3 main things that can cause catastrophic leaf drop (these come from the Univ. of Az Coop Extension, very helpful info and quite applicable to us in the San Diego area): 1. Over fertilization. Prevent by following fertilizer application instructions on the product. Treat by watering heavily to flush the fertilizer below the root zone. 2. Inappropriate watering strategy, too much, or not enough water: As a general rule citrus need a deep watering once a month in the winter and once a week in the summer (in ground suggestion, NOT for potted plants, it may be less frequently in the winter, unless we get Santa Anas, more frequently in the summer, especially if very hot. Use the "index finger" test to tell.) Apply water to the entire root zone, well out beyond the drip line. Apply enough water to wet the soil at least a foot below the surface. Check the depth of the irrigation with a long handled screw driver, you will only be able to push the screw driver as deep as the water has gone. 3. Citrus Mesophyll Collapse: Grapefruits are particularly susceptible but any citrus may be affected. It is not uncommon for grapefruit trees to be affected and other nearby citrus to be fine. Leaves and fruit of citrus trees dry up and drop. Stems and branches remain green and living. Rarely is the whole tree affected. Mesophyll collapse occurs when there are unseasonable weather changes. For example if it gets abnormally cold in October for several days and then heats back up above average temperature in November. This fluctuation stresses the trees as they kick into and out of and then back into their winter slow down. It is especially stressful after a dry summer. MANAGEMENT: Remove fallen fruit to prevent attracting fungal and bacterial diseases. Continue to water the tree on its normal cycle and it will leaf-out again in the spring. Do not prune out the defoliated branches until spring, and then only after the tree has completely leafed out. Adding this: Start fertilizing as SOON as you see any sign of leaf push. I had this happen to two of my in-ground grapefruit and was horrified. Was glad to know this was the cause. Happened last winter when we had all the cold, wet weather. Hi from St. John, Creativity counts because I am not good at "giving up anything" First, went off island to purchase everything.Had on island quote for Kraftmaid kitchen cabinets. Quoted price of $46,700.00 Eeeeek my budget was $20,000. That one quote started me on my new mission to stay on budget and look for bargains. Went to Expo Design Center on Pine Island Florida. Had a fantastic designer Robert Fabian. I chose and ordered Kraftmaid cabinets for my kitchen and the apt kitchen downstairs only the price was $17,000.00 versus $46,000.00 for my kitchen comparable to what I was quoted here. Sixteen ceiling fans,all plumbing fixtures,all plumbing hardware,all door hardware all GE appliances both kitchens plus outdoor kitchen, except for a Subzero refrigerator and Subzero freezer which I bought at Coral Springs Appliances because Home Expo doesn't carry SZ's.Bamboo flooring for husband's bonus room. 4000 sq.ft of travertine marble for all floors and apt shower @ $2.94 sq.ft. The list was huge but so was the discount by buying everything at one place. The designer gave me a discount plus ordered what I needed the week the store offered a cabinet discount or appliance discount etc.The most miraculous part was everything and I mean everything was exactly what we ordered and in perfect condition. That means alot when you had to ship everything to an island and truck to a site on the side of a hill. The other fantastic savings was for what I couldn't afford to special order.I found the Habitat for Humanity Rehab Stores in Ft. It is gorgeous a double helix with wide stringer $10,000.00 plus 6800.00 to ship it here.A poster on this forum showed pictures of their built in spiral stairs, we did that with the help of a local carpenter the labor and materials were 4200.00 complete. I think you have to look at the big picture cutting back items you can't upgrade later makes no financial sense. You can always change hardware lighting appliances etc but it is difficult to add square footage and roof lines that you won't always love.The best of luck.

PolarPrincess - If you have a USB port, buy an external hard drive that connects to the USB port and copy ALL of your data (pictures and other personal files) to it. Then your data is safe and you can clean up the rest of the system. If not, burn them to CD for safety. THEN: 1 - Empty the Trash 2 - Search for files on the entire system, using this search pattern" *.bak (those are temporary files that can be deleted) 3 - Delete all of those files. 4 - Empty the trash again. 5 - Search for all *.tmp files and delete them 6 - Empty the trash again. 7 - Run the Windows XP "check disk" utility as described here: http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html It may take quite a while ... 8 - Then try running the defragmentation program.

It's looking like a hardware problem then. The usual suspects are bad cable connection (internal), bad power inverter or bad lcd screen. ( in order of expense and somewhat in order of likelihood). It's very possible with the white screen that it's just a cable connection problem. It could also be a bad motherboard, and usually you connect an external monitor to rule that out but in this case you can't do that. Usually when this kind of thing happens, the screen goes black, but you can see the screen using a flashlight. But you're saying it goes from black to white. This still indicates one of the above four suspected hardware issues. As stated the D partition is for your recovery data only, you should not put anything else in there or mess with that partition, should you need to recover the pc to original that is your only source if you have not made the recovery discs from that partition when you got the pc. Make those NOW. Leave D partition alone.
You want to back up the pc to some other source not the same hard drive. use dvds or flash drives or an external drive. The best way to do a back up is to do a full image backup a snapshot of the pc and the operating system. You can get a program to do that free if you do not have one.

Right click on a folder and select Properties, should show the date the folder was initially made.

OK. I didn't know "D" was a logical drive, since the display from clicking on the Computer icon seemed to be showing it as a separate physical drive. I assumed too much from that display. From my list of folders that are on D, it looks like the folders for recovery are there. I did a System Restore after the incomplete backup was attempted, and the restore completed normally. Would that indicate that D is OK?

Thanks for the helpful explanations. I have a set of discs that came with my computer, one for the operating system, Dell utilities, a sealed Microsoft Windows disc, others. From what I see on the Dell site, it was with Windows 7 they stopped sending discs. There were no instructions to make the restore discs when I installed my computer. BUT, I'm going to make a new copy anyway. Is the snapshot of the system preferable? Is there a way to estimate how many DVDs I'll need?

You may find the answer on this page of the Windows 7 forums. If you haven't partitioned a drive you probably wouldn't know that each partition is given a different drive letter and treated as another drive.

No a system restore only takes you back to the date the restore point was created. The recovery disks you have will take the computer back to the way it was the day you got it home.

To do a full backup using Windows 7 backup feature click start
click Control panel
click System and Security and in the new window you will see where to click to proceed. As I do not back up very often I cannot remember if it tells you how many DVDs you need, likely not less than 3 or more than 5.

System Restore is usually from your "C:\System Volume Information" a hidden folder by default.

Sounds like your D has the OEM install files on it.. to revert your computer hard drive back to Out of the Box new condition. If you didn't delete any of it :)

.... An image of your C drive made by a program like Macrium will usually compress to about half the total used bytes that that drive shows as currently used in windows.
Usually too big to image to DVD's unless you don't mind spending the time it would take to do,,, and of course the cost of several DVD's.
My C drive is small compared to most peoples on win7 and shows 60gb used .. divided by about 4.7gb per DVD.. thats a lot of DVD's and lots of time sitting there changing those disks.

Paid about $11 delivered from newegg for a usb hard drive enclosure and stuck an old laptop hard drive in it & use that here to save system images to weekly. Think DVD-R's cost me about $0.40 each in a pack of 50 including tax from Office Depot.

I'd recommend that you purchase an external hard drive to store your backups. First, do a complete image backup, and then you can do incremental backups if you wish. Lots of information if you use Google to search. Raven mentioned Macrium as one free backup program. Another good one that I use is EaseUS ToDo backup. I don't bother with incremental backups but make a full image backup about every two months right after the MS updates come out. This way I always have a complete version of the latest documents, programs, OS and updates that I can use to restore in case of a catastrophe. I have done a restore that way, and it saved me much work. There are also paid programs, but why pay when the freebies work so well?
