How to make door of between-studs cabinet 'disappear' into wall?

Hi All,

This is a cross-post from the remodeling forum - my post is the only one there for about three weeks so I thought I'd try over here.

I'm remodeling a small bathroom that has a shallow cabinet recessed in the wall between studs where an exterior window used to be. It's trimmed out & has a "plain vanilla" slab door made of plywood. I'd like to add a couple more shallow cabinets for storage, but won't be able to make them the same size or place them symmetrically, so I'm trying to figure out how to make all of the doors "disappear" into the wall to avoid a cut-up, messy looking wall. I can replace the doors & trim on the existing cabinet to make this work.

I've thought of using a picture frame for the doors - kind of like THIS

but size & placement of cabinets will make that difficult, and I can't think of anything I want to hang in there.

I've also thought about covering the wall in a decal kind of like THIS

to mask the outlines of the cabinets, but even if I could find one that works in my bathroom I'd still have to figure out how to make the doors absolutely flush with the wall.

I'm also wondering whether it would be possible to cover the entire top part of the wall with plywood (like reverse wainscoting?) & cut cabinet openings in it to avoid any need to trim out the cabinet area.

There are so many thoughtful and creative folks on this forum that I'm hoping someone might have ideas they're willing to share.

Many thanks from Tallahassee, FL!
