Trouble using laptop outside in my back deck

I thought I could use my laptop on my back deck on a nice day but for some reason I can't. Works everywhere else in my house. Does the type of router have anything to do with it? Thanks

I assume you are talking about wireless router. Yes it could have something to do with it. Various router brands work differently some better than others, also depending on if it is a g or an n rated router will make a difference also and depending on what your laptop is rated for too is it g or n?
You can buy a range extender which could help. Also try moving the actual router around a bit where you have it located to see if that helps. If yours has the antennas on it you sometimes can buy bigger antennas which will help broaden the range.

what is the name and model router you are using?

Wireless access can be highly affected by your location. I have a laptop in a separate building on my property which is about 70' from my router. It can get good reception in a specific spot in the room, but loses connectivity if you move it 5'. It seems to be a function of interference by the building structure. A different router or a range extender may solve your problem...or not.

No, I'm thinking of the difference between the wavy roofing panels (Suntuf is a common brand, but there are others) and a genuine structural, light-transmitting roofing product. The corrugation in the Suntuf-type panels increases their rigidity, but they are still single-ply, nonstructural panels. What I want to stress is the distinction between structural and nonstructural roofing panels. Lexan is the brand name for GE's line of polycarbonate thermoplastics, and is not any specific roofing product (there are also many other manufacturers of polycarbonate besides Lexan, just as there are other manufacturers of facial tissue besides Kleenex. They are just as good and often less expensive). The first picture below shows some of the structural roofing panels manufactured by Lexan (they make hundreds of different products). The webbing between the plys functions much like a miniature truss. This is what makes them structural. The bottom picture shows another one of their products, clear polycarbonate sheet. It is nonstructural, and using something like that is probably penny-wise and pound-foolish since you're going to need much beefier framing to support it, both to keep it from sagging and to prevent wind-shear damage. Naturally, homeowners are free to use whatever they like, but I would seriously question the building credentials of a person who advocated the use of nonstructural panels in a situation where structural panels are called for. Remember...it's the stingy man who pays the most in the long haul.

Go into your BIOS and make sure your hard drive is in the list of boot devices. Also make sure it's not set to try to boot from the network. Next time you boot, watch all the messages carefully and see if there is a message about a bad boot sector or a bad device or a bad drive. I may be wrong, but I think I've gotten similar messages when I've had a hard drive go bad on me. If your hard drive had a problem, you may be able to resurrect it using Spinrite but it's kind of expensive, so if you have a good backup and install disks, you'd probably be better off replacing the drive and starting over. Even if spinrite recovers the drive, you'll probably need to replace it soon, but spinrite buys you time to recover the data on the drive.

Cynic, it came with McCaffy (sp?) but I immediately went to the university website and started the install for their free Norton. It didn't want to finish the updates so I am taking it to the campus computer help desk people this morning. I don't like McCaffy so it will be uninstalled as soon as I get the Norton working. Firewall was also one and working. I have uninstalled all the "bonus" software you always find on new computers and added Firefow since I don't like IE. Have to keep IE because of one internet based program at school but for everything else I use Firefox. Never got around to installing all my other software because it will have to run updates and I didn't want it to do that until Norton is working completely. Thanks for worrying about my computer. I will keep you posted on the university's help. Janie

Weird, but I have a link to the FL gardening forum on my browser bookmarks bar & I always go through that w/ no problem @ all. Since I'm on Chrome & have Android OS on my phone, all the bookmarks are synced. & I think the most frequent way I get here is through the link @ Home Decorating forum. I find it best to click through the links to 'Home' forums & 'Garden' forums on the sidebar, since that's not cached & is automatically refreshed. Wondering what Operating Systems others are using? Is it iOS or Android, Windows or Mac? & who else has their favorite forum as their portal, rather than the forums index? & I don't log out either - why bother?

You very likely are stretching the range of your gateway or router. Many are limited to 75 ft. Also, intervening objects between the laptop and the router will make a difference. For example, metal lath in walls can shield the signal. A big metal object between the computer and the router can affect reception; objects such as refrigerators, freezers, laundry equipment, and duct work.

And then there are exceptions to this rule. My son had a laptop that was detecting routers 1/8 mile away.

It could also be the antenna in your laptop.

Anybody know if one could simply plug in an external USB antenna, or would they have to also install a driver for it?
