My laptop has arrived :-)

Had a bit of a scare though. Staples had to order it because they sold out of them Sunday. I understood that I was to pick it up at the store but went by this afternoon and they said it would be delivered to the house- no one had been home all day. So I call the courier and was told that they left it with my neighbor. Well, I don't really know my neighbors, only one of the dogs, Cesar, lol. Asked Cesar's mo0m but she didn't have it so I headed to the other neighbor's house.

The other neighbor has only been back home from the nursing home for a few months... and according to her family, really should not be living there because of her developing dementia. But it isn't bad enough for them to have a legal option to tell her she has to give up her house. She also is not in the best of physical health.

So I walk over not really sure what I would find- last time I saw her, she thought I was someone else (she told the delivery guy that I worked at a convenience store, umm, no). I am over there ringing the doorbell and banging on the door, no answer- so then I start getting worried that something happened to her and we have no way to call her family. Finally, a car pulls up and she gets out- apparently she has a part time job with a family friend (not sure WHAT she could actually do). She had my computer sitting by the door.

I made sure she had both Eric and my cell numbers because she mentioned that she had no way to get in contact with us. I asked her for the number of one of her kids but she didn't give it to me- guess she doesn't want us checking up with them, lol.

She is a REALLY sweet lady but I was afraid that she wouldn't know who I was and wouldn't give me my computer!

I am now sitting at Hardee's installing software.

YeeeeHawwwww!!! That's so sad about your neighbor..but at least she had your computer and knew who you were!

Bump, I was so relieved. Wasn't sure how I would explain the whole mess if she called the cops on me! LOL

This thing has a webcam, I will have to put a bandaid over it or something. My recent luck with technology... it would turn on at a "most inopportune time". Now sure what I think of the whole webcam idea yet.

By the way, anyone upgraded their Win 7 home premium to the Win 7 professional? I am only thinking about it because some of my software packages prefer Win XP and the upgrade is MUCH cheaper than replacing the software. Apparently, the upgrade is more compatible with XP software.

Go into your BIOS and make sure your hard drive is in the list of boot devices. Also make sure it's not set to try to boot from the network. Next time you boot, watch all the messages carefully and see if there is a message about a bad boot sector or a bad device or a bad drive. I may be wrong, but I think I've gotten similar messages when I've had a hard drive go bad on me. If your hard drive had a problem, you may be able to resurrect it using Spinrite but it's kind of expensive, so if you have a good backup and install disks, you'd probably be better off replacing the drive and starting over. Even if spinrite recovers the drive, you'll probably need to replace it soon, but spinrite buys you time to recover the data on the drive.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! Your advice worked and my computer is almost back to normal. Goldie: that was my first thought, too (LOL)! Mary Lu, it wasn't you at all; just me trying to do too much :~) I basically just followed Camp56 and Ideefixe's instructions and it worked! I can't thank you both enough for taking the time to walk me through it!! Rose: the thumb drive idea is a good one for future problems. I never would have thought of that. Thanks! Olychick: you know, I'm embarrassed to say that I had no idea about that Restore feature. In the past, whenever I've had a problem DH has fixed it for me. I need to be more proactive. Allison: thanks for those recommendations. WIP: yes, they use a small outside IT firm; nobody in-house except DH. I was going to call them next if I couldn't find a solution here. Oakley: you're kidding?!? I made a mistake earlier saying that I deleted Norton, it was MacAffee, which I've had for quite a while. It ran every day, scanning for problems but never found a one . . . and I KNEW something was wrong before all of this. That's why I was looking for anti-virus programs. Hmmmmm. Graywings: Thanks! I'd forgotten that GW even had a computer forum and had never checked it out. But, I will definitely keep it on mind for future problems. Chickadee: Haha . . . that's for sure! DH would flip out if I screwed up his computer! Camp56: thanks for mentioning that about the two programs. That's good to know as I wasn't sure. Thanks again for all your help. It worked!!!! Lynn

Deja vu all over again. :) I'm imagining people some day showing off the genuine turn-of-the-century tile from the historic Fireclay Tile company. Nice! It might also be nice to lay in extra detail tile--just in case someone someday wished to expand the design.

Lars, I had a Polder scale for probably 20 years. It got wonky so I called Polder thinking I could send it in. Customer service said "we haven't made that scale for some time" ( can't remember how many years), so I ordered the SS Oxo that has a pull out for large bowls/items. I'm glad they couldn't fix mine-this is light years ahead of my Polder.

Do you have the 64 bit version of Windows 7? If so, be sure you're getting the 64 bit versions of software whenever possible. The only thing I've had trouble with so far is PageMaker won't run with 7/64 bit. Won't even install. Haven't tried tinkering with different compatibility modes too much.

And please tell me that you made sure the firewall was on, and you got some of the security software first thing! :)

Cynic, it came with McCaffy (sp?) but I immediately went to the university website and started the install for their free Norton. It didn't want to finish the updates so I am taking it to the campus computer help desk people this morning. I don't like McCaffy so it will be uninstalled as soon as I get the Norton working. Firewall was also one and working.

I have uninstalled all the "bonus" software you always find on new computers and added Firefow since I don't like IE. Have to keep IE because of one internet based program at school but for everything else I use Firefox.

Never got around to installing all my other software because it will have to run updates and I didn't want it to do that until Norton is working completely.

Thanks for worrying about my computer. I will keep you posted on the university's help.

Two minutes with the WVU help desk and the antivirus is working! Love that they provide free anti virus- I guess they want to make sure all the computers used on campus have protection so we don't corrupt their computers, lol.
