Mystic/Hey Tricia :)

I'm finally getting serious about planning our Boston/Cape Cod trip for August. So excited - this is our first real vacation in more than five years!

Just realized that we'll be driving right by Mystic and would like to stop. We ate there years ago and I remember it being a lovely area.

Any recommendations for food, etc.? Will probably be coming through on Monday, Aug. 3 on our way to Boston.

Hi Sue,

How fun! Yes, if you're coming up I-95 you'll drive right by us...Exits #90 & #91. There's a scenic overlook just before the Mystic exit. Take Exit #91 & turn right at the bottom of the ramp. Go straight towards Mystic...you'll come to the "Welcome To Historic Mystic - Settled 1654" sign, then on your right will be the cemetery. Keep going straight & you'll come to Mystic Seaport on your right. Keep going to where the road dead ends (careful at that light...there's no right turn on red). Turn right, you'll see the firestation & a Henny Penny convenience store. Keep right & you be at the traffic circle. Round the circle until you've made a left-hand turn. Now, you're on Main Street. My church is right on the corner of the traffic circle. The next landmark is the Bascule Bridge. It goes up once/hour.

Just before the bridge, on your right, is S&P Oyster Company. They are right on the river & have a patio dining area. S&P has very good food. It's one of our favorite places to grab lunch. I've linked to it below.

Right across the bridge is Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream for dessert. If you have time, our downtown has a lot of fun shops to browse through...if you like luxurious linens you'll be in Heaven.

If you're not up for S&P Oyster House...don't discount Mystic Pizza. In spite of all the hype, the pizza's really good! Just drive through downtown (2 blocks past the bridge) & on your right just as you start up the hill you'll see the sign, "Mystic Pizza - A Little Slice of Heaven"...it's right past the bank.

If you have more time, Abbott's Lobster In The Rough is a Mystic-Noank landmark restaurant. You can get crab or lobster dripping in butter on a toasted roll (their trademark sandwich) or many other clam shack favorites. You can sit on the picnic tables right on the Mystic channel & watch the boats. Abbott's in the Rough is BYOB & they serve on paper plates. Most locals take tableclothes, sterling, china, candles, & wine at night creating a romantic waterfront dining experience.

Also, the Seaport's gift shop & art store are open to the public without purchasing admission tickets to the museum. If you have time, the art store is fantastic.

Olde Mystik Village is located right at I-95, Exit #91. There are 60 shops plus Mystic Aquarium is right next door. Go Fish is not bad for lunch & it's right next to the shopping center. There's a gourmet cook store in there also.

For a more upscale restaurant the Floodtide at the Inn at Mystic is good. They've been closed for remodeling since just after Christmas but are re-opening next week. If you go there...ask for the "lobster crepes". Even if they're not on the menu...they'll make them for you. Ah, they are sooo good. This is the Inn where Bogart & Bacall spent their honeymoon. They stayed in the mansion at the top of the hill.

If times allows, I'd also recommend a stop at Stonington Point (you can see Watch Hill, RI, Fisher's Island, NY, & of course CT from the point...there's a public beach & overlook right on the water). Of course, if you go there...then you'll be inspired to go to Watch Hill. And, from there...Newport. Oh, don't miss Newport on your way to the Cape! Even if you're not hungry...eat at the Red Parrot...just for the experience!

Vacation! We are sooo ready also. I am so glad it's finally summer.

Hi Sally! You're right - nobody agrees. That's because each has their own interpretation of the raw data. Some have their own preferences for one string of data versus another. Then again, sometimes the data itself is obscure. You will see more varied forecasts with day-to-day weather than with major weather events when most everybody backs off and goes with NOAA. We work for NOAA as spotters so they are our foremost source for data. But, we have been reading weather for decades as long distance off-shore boaters and are not afraid to make an on-the-fly decision on our own if we feel it is warranted. The data we provide shows up on weather.com and TWC's on-air programing.. Weather, unfortunately, is not a perfect science. New satellites, larger computers, better models, etc. have made weather prediction leaps and bounds better than, say, 20 years ago but there's still so much to learn. All weather is local. In my area, our official forecasts are rarely accurate to what's happening outside. That's because Mystic sits under a "stable air mass" that affects our weather significantly. Five miles away, in Groton, the weather is different. NOAA's offices cover a small region but within that region are micro climates that will not match the overall region's forecast, such as Mystic. Use NOAA's forecast for the big picture. Then, check your local newscaster for discrepancy. Finally, apply your micro knowledge of the area in question. And always allow for change. Right now, we are under a Special Weather Statement for fog. Outside, the sun is shining brightly but I've no doubt up the coast a couple miles they are fogged in. CT has received several inches of rain this week with frequent flash flood warnings. Mystic has not had a drop. This is why NOAA's spotter program exists. To take advantage of people's knowledge of what's actually happening on the ground. Doplar radar can often spot a tornado. But there's no substitute for a spotter on the ground. All of our data is reported directly to NOAA and they distribute it around to TWC, local news stations, etc. Many, many times I've reported something to NOAA and 5 seconds later my TV starts to beep and a red warning screen appears based on what I've reported. And, finally, there's no better way to check the weather than opening your blinds and taking a look outside! lol Many old folk tales are surprisingly accurate such as, "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Good luck. I found this online IRS tax liens do not go away. They stay on the property until they are paid off, accruing additional interest as they go along. Read your sales contract. Somewhere in it, you should be able to find wording indicating that the seller will deliver a clear and free title. Right now he can't. Discuss with your attorney how you want to proceed. and what your options are. This is not going to go away, nor is it going to be resolved quickly and smoothly. No lender will give you a mortgage until this is resolved. Your attorney can advise you if can withdraw your offer, rewrite a new offer contingent upon all liens being paid, or if it's even worth the effort to try to do so. Your attorney has to find out the amount of the lien, then he and the seller's attorney have to contact the IRS and see if they are willing to negotiate with the seller to get the house sold to try to pay off the lien. The IRS would want to see the contract, your pre-approval letter to see if you can indeed buy the house. Then they may or may not be willing to negotiate the lien. Depending on how much the lien is, there may not even be enough equity in the house to pay it off. A long drawn out process for sure. It looks like the IRS gets first crack at any money the SELLER may get at settlement. I can't believe they want YOU to pay for the lien, what skunks. Unsure if a post here is appropriate but I've decided to let my better judgment prevail. Cathy, I'm glad you received the package. It was FAST! Only took a couple days. Wasn't supposed to arrive until tomorrow. :) We are going to have to rename our peninsula "Mustang Point" because of your gracious and thoughtful gifts to our recoveries. I intend to submit the renaming request at our next planning meeting! :) I know one little girl who had a homemade BD cake because of a pan that showed up on her doorstep from somebody in FL she'd never heard of. No "Best of Triciae" would be complete without her mole recipe. I have never made it, but it remains one of my "holy grail" recipes that I want to experience some day, when time and the right kitchen come together. MOLE SAUCE (Tricia E) 2/3 Cup Whole Almonds 6 Dried Ancho Chiles 4 Dried Pasilla Chiles 1/3 Cup Sesame Seed 1/4 Teaspoon Anise Seed 1 Cinnamon Stick 4 Cloves Garlic, Unpeeled 1/4 Cup Lard (substituting will affect authentic taste) 1 Dry Tortilla (allow fresh to air dry overnight or put in a low oven for 30 min.) 1/4 Cup Raisins 1/4 Teaspoon Ground Coriander 1/4 Teaspoon Ground Cloves 3 Tablespoons Lard 3 Ounces Mexican Chocolate (or, bittersweet will be OK if you can't find Mexican) 3-1/2 Cups Chicken Broth (homemade makes a noticeable difference in this recipe) Instructions: 1.) Toast almonds in a 300 degree oven for 30 minutes. Set aside to cool. 2.) Wash chiles and remove stems and seeds. Open the chiles flat and place into a saucepan. Weight them down with a plate and cover with water. Bring to a boil and allow to cook 5 minutes over medium heat. Set aside to cool (do not drain yet). 3.) In an ungreased skillet, toast the sesame seed over medium heat, tossing frequently, until golden brown (about 3 minutes). Remove from pan. In the same skillet, toast the anise seed, cinnamon stick, and unpeeled garlic. Set aside to cool. When cool, peel the garlic. In a blender, finely grind the cinnamon stick, anise, and sesame seed. 4.) In a heavy frying pan, heat the 1/4 cup lard over medium heat and fry the tortilla until crisp and golden. Fry the raisins briefly in the same skillet in the lard to puff them. Break tortilla in pieces into the blender. Blend into find crumbs. Add the cooled, toasted almonds, and blend until fine. Remove the mixture and set aside. 5.) Place in the blender the raisins, the sesame seed, cinnamon, and anise mixture, and add the toasted peeled garlic cloves. Add coriander and cloves. Drain the cooled chilies reserving the liquid. Add to the blender 1 cup of chili liquid and the chilis. Blend to an even consistency. Add the almond-tortilla mixture and 1/2 cup of the chicken broth. Blend again. 6.) In a large pot, melt the 3 tablespoons of lard. Add the chili mixture and fry 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Break the chocolate into pieces and add to the chili puree, lower the heat and cook 10 minutes to melt the chocolate, stirring constantly. Slowly stir in the remaining chicken stock, bring to a boil, lower heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. If necessary, add small amounts of either broth or chili liquid to achieve the desired consistency. Tips: Blend thoroughly each step being sure to make a fine blend. You can stop after the frying of the paste (before adding the chix broth) & freeze just as a paste or add the broth, complete the sauce, & freeze as a finished product. Equally good results. /tricia

I agree with Tricia! I live 10 minutes from Mystic. My husband's favorite is S&P Oyster - not only b/c of the river view...

Azu, a new-ish restaurant near the drawbridge, is also cool... I love the lobster mac & cheese.

I recommend Stonington Burrough... just down Route 1 from Mystic.
