Mac goes black

Sometimes, my Mac laptop's screen will go black and the computer makes a noise I can't describe. Is there anything I can do about this or does it sound like something I need to bring it in to be repaired for? It's about a couple years old laptop. It doesn't do this at any particular time or activity, just at random. Well, usually when I'm on the internet.

Don't know, but I'll bet someone at this free site will. I've used from time to time and always come away with good feedback from knowledgeable people.

are you using it on your lap on a soft surface that could be closing off the vents on the bottom? Laptops will get very over heated if their vents are not fully open and over heating will cause one to shut off to prevent further damages, the noise could be a fan that is going bad. I think I would have it looked at.
You can buy air circulating pads to put a laptop on that have little fans in them which help to keep them cool and the air circulating under them.

be sure you read the reviews on the laptop coolers because some are not worth the money. Also some use the power of the pc through the usb port and some plug into a power supply, those have much more power and strength to cool with out tasking the laptop usb power supply.

When it does this is it running on battery power on plugged in? could make a difference, many will run hot with battery.

Hi, Kai and Sue, Thanks! Glad you like the photo. Yes, I thought about a vintage thread. Glad to know you will contribute, Sue! I just groomed all my AVs and thought I'd have some fun. The vintage plates are English transferware, the pattern designers were British. The plates sold in both the U.S. Markets as well as British. The figurines are from Holland, so, Dutch. I guess you could call it American collectible eclectic! The large pink blossom overhanging the Dutch boy is Ian Madame. To the left in front of it is the Optimara one that looks like rosebuds. It is an older AF - the blooms get larger with age. To the left of the boy is a mini Rob's Love Bite. It is red double. In the center is another of the Optimara that looks like rose buds. Behind and between the plates is Beauty Goddess. The large Violet color one on the right that looks blue in the photo is probably an Optimara or a Lyon's. It is perhaps 5 years old or more. It could be Sea Drift, a Lyon's, but it blooms heavily like an Optimara. I just realized, I packed much of my vintage China as we are moving soon. I will see what else I can come up with. It's the "black glaze" part that I'd eliminate. Glazing like that has a tendency to make the cabinet just look shabby and old. There's enough going on with the gray stain on the wood, no need for glaze too. You also better make sure you will be comfortable with the variegations in the wood which will come to the surface with that wash. See on the sample pic you posted of the Snowbank door how the vertical, horizontal, and center panel pieces look so different from each other? Make sure you see it IRL and imagine that all over your kitchen. Some people--maybe you--might say "how charming, I love that". Others might not. Which one are you?

No, the Mac is on a hard granite counter top. It stays cool and the bottom of the Mac never really feels hot.

It's almost always plugged in to the wall.
