bee4mee, check out this website. Carphonewarehouse is apparently one of the biggest cell retailers in the UK. I just have to figure out which phone, which SIM card. I can place my order and pick up my phone(s!) when I get there from the store of my choice, closest to whatever hotel I'm staying. For the price - $21 for a phone with a bit of airtime on it - I might buy two to use as 'walkie talkies' and top off as needed! Most advice says to 'rent' a phone in the States so you have it with you. I knew there had to be equivalent mobile stores like we have here, from Best Buy, Target, heck even my grocery stores sells phones so it had to be possible to buy a go-phone in London. Took me a bit but I found one (several, but carphonewarehouse seems to be the daddy). I'll figure out later if I keep the phones for friends who travel, future Europe trips (buying SIMs as necessary) or just sell 'em on ebay. Anyone have a tutorial on web access through a cell phone? My eyeballs are crossed. My DH has an iphone so I know that we have unlimited 'data' for the $20 or $30/month. I'm getting confused with charges per day, per minute, MB bundles. Thanks all! Thanks Zep. I'm quite willing to learn the Mac system and DH knows next to nothing about either. He needs little cheat sheets for each thing he wants to do. LOL! Not really concerned about file compatibilities -- I don't think. :-)) I'd probably put Open Office on the new one rather than buying another MS Office Suite. He won't do a lot of (like any) word processing and I understand anything I might create in OO will be viewable in MSO. If I were in need of editing then I'd C+P said info into a new Office Doc on my own 'puter and carry on. Might happen once a year. What I do not want is a problematical OS that I'm constantly running to fix so he can do something inane like play crib on Yahoo. I've made it a practice to avoid all MS upgrades for a considerable length of time before installing. It simply isn't worth the headaches and time involved. All that said perhaps a wiser, though possibly difficult, move would be to install my XP OS on the new laptop and buy Vista to install on my machine. I have to run thru some of the video info on Vista but I'm thinking I'd be the person that would be most likely to use (some of) the *bells and whistles* and he'd be more comfy with an interface that had some familiarity. Problem(s) arise in buying a laptop/notebook sans OS or with OS and then uninstalling / reinstalling . . . blah blah. Hmmm If I upgrade (can this be done?) to Vista on my XP machine, can I install my present XP system on the laptop? I have a gig of RAM now so would need to upgrade to 2 at least. I'll run the compatibility test but think most everything else should work. Have 2 80 Gig HD's, one of which is partitioned to run W'98 (cause I had games that hadn't yet had patches developed that I like to play). I just bought a Toshiba L45 bottom line laptop for $450 after $150 rebate. Luckily it has a Pentium Mobile Dual Core processor, dual layer dvd burner, wifi, 5400rpm hard drive, 1Gb memory, graphic card with 128 mem and can use system ram too, 15.4 inch true-bright display. Sent 90 bucks to an etailer for 2gb of Kingston memory and a 4gb sandisk usb drive for Vista's readyBoost feature. Works nifty actually on 1GB, a 1gb flash drive does give it some added snappyness. I have a wifi enaabled modem from my isp, which was free. And a second wifi access point out back because there's a dead spot where I sit out there. Not much to it really. You dont need to send much if you watch for the sales... I prefer to stay away from the celery type mobile processor because they can get more hotter on your lap than most and dont think they have the power savings flexabilities. I'm replacing a 4 plus yr old toshiba that I broke and will mickey mouse it back together one way or another and probably make it a part time server and back up computer so I can make my old desktop into something with a coolness old factor. It uses too much electricity so I cant run it full time. I'm rambling... its way to cold and windy out there, 45°/8:30am .... which is like ..freezing to me.
